Weaponlord thread: Barbarians, weapons and fighting in 16 bit glory

This thread is about Weaponlord, a rather obscure fighting game developed by NAMCO, released in October 1995 on the SNES and Sega Genesis. The main difference between both versions is that SNES seems to have slightly better graphics, and Genesis being more fluent in gameplay. Maybe there are others, but I don’t know at the moment. James Goddard and Dave Winstead were the developers, as they worked in the past with Capcom, specifically in SF2 Champion Edition and Super SF2 Turbo. Also it was one of the few games that were compatible with the SNES XBand System, and early service that allowed online play on the SNES!.

What makes Weaponlord special is its mechanics. For a '95 game it is a bit “advanced”, like it has a parry/deflect system (like soul calibur), if you are succesful the rival gets a recoil and it is open to attacks. You can parry high/jumping attacks (up+Y on SNES, up+X in Genesis), mid (f+Y SNES, f+X Genesis) and low (d+Y SNES, d+X Genesis). Also it has some sort of chain combos, in that you can chain light to mediums, and mediums to some fierces, and special moves together to make combos. It has a flexible juggle system too!. There are a form of “fatalities”, where you can cut the hell out of your oponent at the final round when you defeat him!. Many says that this game is the precursor of the Soul Calibur Series, and for good reasons.

The special moves follow the SF standard. But there are ones that execute differently, like holding a button then doing the dpad sequence, a bit weird at first (in combos for the most part) but after playing a bit you can adapt to it. Definitely a better enjoyable experience when practicing with a FAQ in hand to learn the controls and the mechanics.

Want to try it out?. Share what you can find about it!.

There’s a thread here on SRK about the game. You may have to search for it since it has been inactive for a while. James also posted a few times in the thread. At one point he was trying to get the IP, but was not able to IIRC. Not sure if he still browses the site.

Samurai Shodown had parrying before this game. If there is a precursor to Soul Edge/Calibur, it is Samurai Shodown.

Has there ever been a comprehensive tutorial on how to actually play this game? I feel like a 5 year old who has just been handed a SNES controller for the first time! This game is impenetrable! It might just be awesome though…
