try this little “trick”. if you both are standing fullscreen away and he starts fireball spam, charge zonk, FA…DC the first fireball and release zonk righ after the dash. this way you’ll dodge 2 fireballs and hit him with zonk in most cases. knockdown+fullscreen distance bridged.
Hmm my tip for the shoryuken is simply block.
Go to training and get either ken or ryu and put it on hardest (cpu spams the shit out of shoryuken). Now just practice your empy jump ins and block strings so you can figure out where shoryukens come out and always ALWAYS keep in mind when you block a shoryuken to punish is with your most damaging combo.
If you don’t punish a blocked shoryuken there’s no reason for them to be scared of using it.

This is how you should deal with fireballs. Its akward as hell to rock while charging zonk but it should come naturally with practice.
There may not be a single end all beat all to this…
Pressure characters. Abel, Balrog, Akuma. How can they be shut down and kept out of Cody’s face?
out of those i think akuma can be kept away. demon flips can be countered with cl.hk and b.mp. air fireballs with ex slide. s.hk with zonk and c.mk.
abel is a bit tougher, ex zonk will do some damage, but only used occasionally.
balrog is a pain in the ass, i hate his friggin fast jabs. but you can zonk every special but headbutt (you’ll often go tru him, leaving you often at frame disadvantage)
For Balrog I like to keep him out with rocks and good spacing. Having zonk charged at all times is key because you can zonk any dash punch on reaction. When he does manage to get in it can be problematic but just stay calm block, tech throws, and wait for your openings.
I find Akuma to be a difficult match-up. cr.forward and zonk are good tools for getting around air hadokens as well as s.RH. Be sure you are anti-airing when you get the chance and you can punish a blocked sweep with ultra 2. So if the akuma you are fighting gets cross-up tatsu happy and always sweeps after surprise him with an u2. Also learning to OS on teleport happy akumas will help you out as well.
As for Abels well your own your own cause i still have a hard time with that match-up as well. In my experiance it’s whoever gets first knock down and stays on top of their opponent wins.
Fuck Guile. I honestly think this match up is like 8-2
Sweet tips, thanks. Is zonk match dependent? i know it destroys rog, but when should i refrain from it?
during a balrog match? Hmmm I would say refrain from using zonks if you can pressure balrog. On block it’ll push you and him and reset. You always want to be on top of him before he gets pressure on you.
Oh by the way from the latest news from the arcade edition it might change the matchup with guile. Apparently he can’t build meter for free spamming sonic booms anymore (HORRAY!!! in hopes it stays that way)
I seriously doubt that it will stay that way
word…it even sounds stupid
It sounds like a bug more than anything.
The discussion in the Loketest thread has them mentioning that Guile now has to have a boom hit or get blocked in order to build meter. In other words, like Cody’s rocks, he doesn’t get that tasty meter until the boom touches the opponent. This makes perfect sense, really.
I know that this is a regular rant in this topic… but I can´t shake the feeling of real bad matchups against Chun Li, Bison and Dhalsim.
When I lose to other characters, I know that I lost to the player, but with this three it always seems like it´s because of the bad matchup (even sub par players can give me trouble).
On another note, I am hitting a lot of ex zonk after a wake up backdash (instead of going straight to ex zonk). The opponent see the backdash and always try something… and of course the backdash gives you time to see if it´s fine to zonk.
think of it this way.
Hadoukens: Don’t have very good frame advantage on block, usually quick start up but pretty bad recovery, and builds meter (makes sense) You gotta zone properly to build that meter up
Cody’s rock: Has some decent frame advantage on block, slow start up but pretty good recovery so you can make use of your frame advantage, but you shouldn’t attempt a fireball war because you’re not gaining any meter for spamming rocks unless it hits (makes sense)
Guile’s sonic boom: He has extremely good frame advantage on block(lp +6, mp +4, hp +2, ex +1), he has very fast recovery and good start up, he can even dash with his lp boom and not only that he gains meter just for attempting a sonic boom (which is very safe to do so) as a design concept it doesn’t really make sense for that to happen, but we learn to deal with it.
Though I still see this as a hard match up with or without that change but it makes more sense to take out free meter off a very good projectile.
i meant to say zonks in every matchup. Are there matchups that don’t need zonk? I find myself sometimes using it too much. To a point of predictability. Though thats more my fault that codys.
it’s like saying “is there a matchup where I should not use srk?”. don’t limit yourself! zonk is a vital tool which has to be used to be efficent. but don’t spam it, don’t ex zonk every wake, don’t throw it out random at closest distance etc. keep it charged (sometimes) and counter poke at mid range with it, or to counter certain moves and projectiles. I like zonk, it’s a great addition to cody’s gameplay.
I see what you mean. Thanks for that. Could the same be said for wake up dust? Except much more sparingly?
let’s say it’s kinda “don’t use it, but dont forget you’ve it”. wakeup dust is a very bad move to begin with (very unsafe on block, can be focused etc) howver IF you can anticipate a overhead or meaty on wakeup you can use it. but even then, don’t get predictable, they can faint a meaty and are ready to block before the dust hit. it’s also usable against late jump ins / empty jumps to a certain degree, but I’dn’t risk it often. where you can saftly use it often is against fullscreen meaty 1hit projectiles such as hadokens.
Well since I main abel, all I can say is good luck lol. Ryan hunter did a really extensive writeup over at the abel forums which basically boiled down to smart zoning, using EX CU instead of EX zonk since its throw invincible which is incredibly important against abel, have an extremely solid defense and pressuring abel as much as you can on his knockdown since he’s just as free as you are on wakeup. Also avoid getting hit by forward mk like the plague because even on block the mixup is hugely in his favour.
