Warhammer 40k: Space Marine or OOOOOHHH S%(^: The Game

You MOTHERFUCKERS better not be hyping this game up as fan-boys in disguise.

I heard that MP is like WFC. I can dig that. And single player campaign is “go-ham” enough. Ok. But what warrants me spending $60 on this?

And are environments destructible? I’m not expecting anything like RF:Guerilla, but a guy in a fucking tank suit ought to be able to run through a fucking wall. Just saying…

The game is really good, but if you are unsure, then don’t pick it up.

In case anyone wondered, you can’t jump unless you have a jump pack.

The multiplayer is very much like WFC, a game which I loved, so this game is staying in my PS3 for a grip…as long as the online community thrives (unlike WFC :frowning: )

Iron within Iron without!!! Iron warriors pleeze!?! God I hope this isn’t like the shitty ass fire warrior game that came out a few years ago (possibly weaker than a grot with a rock)

Nothing can be as bad as that, also fuck the Tau, such a womanly race.

Picked up SPACE MARINE for 360, will try it out later.

I played about 20 minutes and turned it off. I guess I’m the only person who found it incredibly generic Maybe if I knew anything about the warhammer universe it might be more fun. Thankfully, it was just a rental.

So…after a few days, is this game still going strong to you all? Or has it became meh status?

…still enjoying it, and I haven’t even finished story yet. I’m hoping they have the “Inquisitor Drogan” look in the multiplayer customization options, but I’m already doubting that.

Melta Gun is The Shit™. I love the Lascannon too.

I haven’t finished the story either, i keep playing MP

Ok, I’m gonna cop Gears of Warhammer. Game seems “go ham” enough and the multiplayer actually looks to have a bit of depth.

One thing I’m worried about is I heard SP is gets way repetitive. No matter how badass the melee and killings are, it’s just that. Over and over.

Second thing is the multiplayer matchmaking. Dudes saying it’s taking them 10-15 minutes or more to join matches. Hopefully that gets patched.

Also maybe since there’s alot of fanboys and people buying/playing this game JUST because it’s Warhammer, then maybe it’ll get lots of DLC and last a bit.

The online definitely seems to be it’s strongest leg though, and the classes, perk system, all that stuff keeps the game current. Not to mention the customization.=, which looks fucking cool.

So I definitely did a bit I’m research and looks like I’m about to go drop this $60 sigh…but they’re lucky they released it THIS month. Because if they would’ve waited one more month, in October, it could’ve been really ugly.

This is an issue that seems to happen WAY more on the PS3 and PC versions. For example, on gFAQs (where people love to whine), the 360 board is the most popular, yet there have only been 2 people post that they have this issue. On the PS3 and PC boards, 50% of the posts are probably about this issue.

IMHO, I think people are just not forwarding their ports for the game. The game tells you when your NAT is not “open.” That should be the first clue that you need to either forward your ports, or hook in an ethernet cable.

I hear it takes forever to get into a deathmatch game…but come on…who plays DM

I get matches instantly on pc soooooooooooooooo

That’s true. I seen all the complaints from ps3 owners mostly. But I’ve always had a great connection, I got NAT type 2, and game keeps telling me I’m not set to “open”. So after 10 minutes of waiting on a match, I spent an hour looking up shit and forwarding my ports(at least I think I did). I know I forwarded them on my old fatty but I never did on the slim because I had no probs. Well after all that, I’m still a NAT 2 and game still tells me I’m not “open”. Plus, I ONLY play wired connection.

Any thoughts on this?

EDIT: The Facebook page for the game says that they have been made aware of matchmaking problems for PS3 and are looking into it.

Btw, I STILL haven’t gotten into an online match. Was waiting on DMs but now I’m trying the other modes. Just cleaning up while I’m waiting. Thats the crazy thing. EVERYONE is saying that you should turn this game on when you have chores to do and once they finally throw you in a match, you find yourself sitting down for hours playing because you’re scared to leave and have to attempt to join another session. Wow man. Glad you guys on PC and Xbox are having fun though. I’m starting to regret my purchase now. Didn’t know it was this bad. Goddamn…

So far I haven’t had trouble finding matches; I’m playing on 360 (haha, of course). I played thru the end of story and did a lot of multiplayer action for most of yesterday. So far, I like the “Seize Ground” (each team has to capture certain points of the match for points) more, since it involves a bit more strategy beyond “kill those other guys.” Obviously things work better when you stick to the group and capture a point then move on…it’s tough for the opposing team to fight against a squad… but it was funny this one time I was able to sneak deep into enemy territory and capture one of their points…shit was hilarious to me… they were all busy elsewhere on the map, I guess. No one showed up until after I had captured the point, and I suspect they only noticed me because they had died and re-spawned at the default starting point.

Other things:
-I noticed the Power Sword may have its own set of challenges, but stat-wise it’s just like the Chainsword. It’s a shame that Kill Team was so disappointing to me… I may still get that game if/when it hits “Deal of the Week” just to get the sword.

-Some of the Chaos Marines character designs are incredibly badass… I really want them to either add in a Chaos Marine side-story (unlikely) at some point or do that as an alternate story option to play for the sequel.

-Power Axe seems to be much better than the Hammer, imo. Hammer is 5 out of 5 points on damage, but a 1 out of 5 on speed. For a loss of only 1 block in damage with the axe, it’s 3 out of 5 on speed! Superior speed with a weapon is slightly more important, imo…especially if the difference in power isn’t apparently that much.

-Devastator class is sooo much fun, man. If you see someone before they see you…99% chance their ass is TOAST. Get in that “braced” stance and just unload a storm of bullets in their face… you can’t really win against a halfway decent Devastator guy face to face. Of course, if they are caught off guard from behind they’re fucked. (*catching them the side is dangerous too, but I’ve managed to survive those kinds of encounters too…even while “braced” you can still turn pretty fast if you aren’t zoomed in.) This character class also reminds me of that scene in Terminator 2 when the T-800 is at the window with that big ass gun, unloading a crazy amount of bullets while looking down at the police…shit is awesome, man. The Devastator is a glorious living turret of death and despair. It’s REALLY going to be on once I start unlocking some more perks (level 10 right now…so sadly I don’t even have the 2nd perk slot yet… I think you get that at level 15.) I’ve played a few rounds as Assault, but I’ve had more success/fun with my Devastator character.

…yet another awesome thing…they have steroids in this game too. Heh, of course it’s referred to as “combat stimulants”. I’ve switched to those ever since I unlocked them. This is the thing that makes it rough on new players though… the better weapons/equipment and perks are unlocked as you level up, so a fresh player is going to have a rough time against people that have already put in more time and got more stuff unlocked.

*one minor annoyance… it can be difficult at first to discern who the enemy is, since there is no uniform color or design, really…other than 1 side behind Chaos guys and the other side are the regular Ultra Marines…there’s been times when I didn’t bother shooting at someone because at a glance they looked like someone else from my team…then I find out the hard way when the guy shoots me in the back.

I’ve been out of town the last two days, otherwise I would have responded. It sucks that you’re having issues, but I’ll try to help.

If you want NAT 1, then there is only one option. You have to connect your PS3 directly to your modem. If your connection goes through any other device, then you will have NAT 2. So, you will have NAT 2 if you are wired, but are going through a router. NAT 2 comes in three flavors: open, moderate, and strict. The reason that people tend to not be “open” usually has to do with ports, but there are other issues. The easiest way to go to “open” is to DMZ your router to your PS3.

@Million
The Power Ax and the Thunder Hammer both take two hits to kill normally. After you get the Thunder Hammer’s perk, then it becomes a 1-hit kill weapon. Which is really nice.

@ Spooty: It’s all good. Thanks for the reply. I was able to get into matches after waiting long amounts of time. I just know that I’m able to run complete errands while I wait. But what ps3 users have been doing is clicking up with one another and getting in private matches. It’s killing my friendslist space, and no doubt I’ll have to delete most of these guys when they fix servers, or after I lose interest in game. But it’s a viable option right now, perhaps the ONLY reasonable one we have at the moment.

And about the NAT types, I never knew that was how to achieve NAT 1, good shit. But I heard even other NAT 1s and 2s are getting the “not open” message and THQ is aware of all these problems. I don’t know anything about DMZ’ing routers but I’ve certainly heard of it. I’m just too tired to research and do it today lol.

@ Million: Seize Ground is the best mode for leveling up and getting XP. You don’t even have to get a kill at all, but if you capture a few bases you’ll net more points than if you had a good run in a Death Match. So that’s why more people are in Seizes than DMs, not to mention it’s probably more fun at the moment. What I don’t get though is why peeps will post up and hide around one or two bases, while two more are just open for the taking, no one defending them or trying to take whatsoever. So each match I’ll just creep to those spots and give us the point edge, where the other team can’t recover because EVERYONE is too busy fighting over the same 2 bases, perfectly content with leaving the other 2 vacant, and I just take my Lvl 8 ass over and piss on them.

And lol at people saying the online is “balanced”. It is out of the box, but things start to get pretty fucked up when you go up against the guys with the “steroids”. Dudes like me don’t stand a chance 1-on-1. And you see just how crazy it is once you get killed, copy that guy’s loadout, and you kill someone the same way. So in a sense, copying loadouts keeps the game honest I guess, but still…you can tell the guys with roid rage, and it’s suicide to fuck with them.

I was using Assault class the most at first. The added mobility is good in open stages and in Seizes when I want to creep bases, but unless your 1-on-1 skills are intact, you will die with this class. Killing someone from above doesn’t work like it should because soon as you come down it simply alerts them to your presence. Same with shoulder tackles. Plus Assault class can’t hope to win an honest shootout. So you gotta be buff in melee. I’ll just run a balanced Tactical marine now. Fuck it. I WANTED to run Devastator all day but too damn slow and I never got the hang of moving around and bracing. I’d find a nice spot, brace and wait, then mow down. But the thing with that is the same with any FPS or TPS. If you find a good spot to pick people off, smart players will come back to that spot and get revenge. So you have to keep moving. I didn’t want to have to run around with Devastator. But imma try it out again tonight.

Also…neat little tidbit: People are boosting and leveling up so fast by playing private matches by themselves. Seize Grounds. And just taking bases. By the time THQ responds, everyone will be buff as hell lmao.

I do feel that the game is balanced, even at the higher levels. “Steroids” are limited by their quantity and the fact that they have to be used before getting into a battle. Assaults make the best use out of them, but they can’t use “steroids” in the air, which hurts it’s usefulness. Plus, you can tell when someone has it on, because of the icon that appears above them. So, you have the option of running away.

Yea, Lu Bu style lol.

I don’t think so, Matrydom and the one-hit kill TH perk kind of ruin any sense of balance.

Most of those problems could be solved if the dodge was a little longer length wise and the recovery wasn’t bad, and you were able to cancel melee combos into a roll to get away. I can’t tell you how many times I was out of ammo (Since my gun isn’t a one hit kill) I kill the TH swinger with a melee attack only to have him Matrydom me because my guy isn’t done with his combo.

It’s easier to deal with now that I have some games under my belt and choose mostly Tac marine which is surprisingly effective and mobile, that and most Assault Marine players fucking suck at doing what they should be doing. I’ve only run across a few that played a very good hit and run game and proved annoying.
