Wanting to get into fighting games

So here is my situation. I have a week old and a 2 year old at home. I am mid thirties. I love fighting games. I have barely played this current generations fighting games, but I always watch videos and read about the newest games. My hobby of gaming is changing due to time. With 2 kids I don’t have the 3-4 hour play sessions I used to have to play long games. So I was thinking about getting into fighting games.

I picked up SFxTK and got a mad cats stick. I am really enjoying it. I don’t expect to ever be really good due to lack of time, but I want to enjoy the games. I know my age and limited time will hold me back a little. I would like to try to play some of the other games, like UMvC3. How well do skills in one game transfer over to another?

I guess I am trying to ask if I am just wasting my time or has anyone else been in a similar situation and have any advice?

I can tell you Umvc3 is completely different from sfxt and your fundamentals will not transfer. If you’re looking for footsie oriented games so you can transfer your skills id say sf4 kof13 etc but def not marvel.

The best way to level up is by participating in your local scene. You’d probably learn a lot more in one local session than if you were online for 2 hours.

If your scene has weeklies, congratulations. You have a steady competitive player base to indulge in for the near future.

You remind me of the guy from the youtube serries The Street Fighter. good show. but yeah anyway marvel is combo based and sfXt is kinda both footsies and combos so whichever part you like better thats the direction you should go. Me i like it all but i tend to lean more towards the combo based games because i stared playing fighting games with mvc2 but tbh just look at all the fighting games out there right now and pick the one you think is the coolest and teach yourself to own people. nothing more satisfying than that

As long as you enjoy playing it, then that’s all you need to know. If you’re planning on becoming a top player, realize that it’s going to a LOT of time and effort, neither of which it seems like you will have with a full time job and 2 kids.

However, there’s no reason why you can’t just play the game at your own pace, have fun doing so, while getting to know the community. I say you should definitely participate in your local scene. Your enjoyment of fighting games gets taken to a higher level once you start hanging out with some of the people that share your hobby.

marvel is a lot different [ EDIT]______ no you’re not wasting your time if you’re enjoying it. If you’re not enjoying it you are!
