Vs. Ryu tips

im curious to see what it say over in the ryu threads vs chun li ,ill bet it says jump in hk,sweep and repeat cuz i notice they will just keep doing it even if your stuffing them every time …

Is there anything wrong with letting hem eat a Lv2 FA for their jump-in shenanigans?

my ex sbk loses to jump in kicks for some reason…

The ex sbk is very beatable a mistimed ex sbk will lose to j FK etc every time even if you think you timed it right. That is why I use many AA methods not just the ex sbk

I can’t beat Ryu for the life of me, Sagat fine Rufus,Boxer,Ken,Viper whatever bring 'em but Ryu jcan’t seem to AA him consistently and he seems to beat me out in close
.

Yes. They can dragon punch you when they land no matter how precise your FA release it.

Any tips on wakeup? Ryu is manhandling me here, especially if he is just standing over me when I’m down. If I block I get thrown, if I crouch I get the overhead punch, if I attack I get DP.

I’m having trouble with the timing of EX SBK on wakeup, or don’t always have the meter. I have easier timing the ultra, but I only find this useful if I know they are gonna throw a fireball on wakeup, but then they aren’t standing directly over me.

You’ll have to work on better timing and/or not falling down so much. Reversal timing is good to know, not just so you can use reversals properly but so you can beat them and bait them.

Stand and block and use a slightly delayed grab – you’ll block dp, throw his overhead, and throw break his grab. You could also crouch block and grab with the same timing; instead of a grab coming out, you should hit his overhead with cr. lk which you can combo into ex legs – everything else stays the same: you’ll block dp and throw tech grab. If he starts sweeping you though, you can punish Ryu’s sweep with Ultra reversal after blocking it and it’s not even hard to do. Back dash will avoid all of them and allow you to punish his lag… backdash + cr. mp should work if he decides to jump on you.

you gotta realise that for him to do all of these wakeup tricks on you, he has to guess correctly too, or he’ll get punished. there’s no free ride for him if he knocks you down.

if you’re getting thrown, or dp, or overhead punched on wakeup, just do ex sbk and it will beat all of those. or dash back on wakeup.

if he starts to hesitate a split second before doing something, you can do instant jump back hk overhead, or lk hasanshuu.

if he starts to space himself out a bit so your wakeup ex sbk whiffs, then you know he’s too far to overhead punch or throw you…so you can neutral jump, backdash, or hasanshuu.

in summary: if in doubt, backdash on wakeup. if you’re sure he’ll try to throw or overhead or dp, ex sbk. try it and report back.

Ryu’s j.RH is ridiculous. The hitbox on that must be immense. It’s bigger than Ken’s, even (when playing Dhalsim, for example, I find that it’s much easier to stop Ken’s j.RH with 'Sim’s back RH than Ryu’s. And Sim’s back RH is one of the game’s best normal AAs).

There are great tips in this thread. I suggest you go to training mode and record a Ryu dummy to jump around and practice your distances and timing. Neutral jump RH should beat it most of the time if it’s done at the appropriate moment. Practice some of the normals some people have mentioned, like cr. mp, and figure out what works, and what doesn’t.

If I anticipate a jump in, I also like catching them in the air with jump forward short. j.short stays out for 10 frames and has only 4 frames of start up. Compare that to Ryu’s j.RH, which has a 7 frame start up and stays out for 7 frames, and you’ll see why Chun’s j.short will beat their roundhouse pretty much 100% of the time.

It’s not something you’d want to abuse, but it can be used as a deterrent to keep them from jumping so much. Remember that people who abuse jump-ins are probably not very good anyway, and as soon as you deal with that part of their gameplay you can shut them down pretty easily.

You have to really good anti-air options against the j.rh. It really depends on timing and distance but they come down to s.fp and c.mp. Between the two of these and your ex. sbk you can pretty much shut down most of Ryu’s air game.

If you have no meter do reversal hsu on wakeup and it will beat anything but a dragon punch which most good players dont do.

That or throw( depending on which hanshu you use because it can miss) . If he misses the DP or the EX DP you can air throw him or punish him badly. Or just run away.

Maybe stay for more than 1 match and you’ll learn the match better.

crouching RH is so free when ryu even leaves the ground for any reason

ryu is just simply ridiculous in this game imo. Super priority on normals as well as having one of the best ultras in the game make him a beast. It almost seems like capcom wanted to make him top tier.

you can always target combo then do the three stomps on the head

thanks for the tips cause I have the exact same problem…I can win against good players(or at least at my level or slightly better) that use every other character but I lose even to scrubby ryus and this pisses me off. My anit-air game is decent against other characters but with ryu it’s just trades and kicks in the face. add the fact that I don’t put too much pressure cause I’m afraid of shoryukens and this means that I still don’t have a solid strategy against him…
I’ll try to use c.mp from now on…but, does it always work or is like against sagat so that if they time it late you get hit?

Oh come on. Has everyone got sick of moaning about Sagat that we now need to move on to Ryu? Yes, he’s a very strong character, but he’s not unbeatable. Then again, neither is Sagat.

Yeah I was up for a laugh so decided to check it out, this is what I found, first page of Match-ups thread, couldn’t quote for some reason so I’ll just paste.

  1. Apparently Chun is very cheap, because her ultra jumps full screen.
  2. If you don’t buffer, you better start, cause Ryus are watching for that!
  3. No comment on the jump attack comment.
  4. “just turtle vs her”
