Hey guys… I’ve always felt that Tekken had more variety in playing styles and movelists than VF. But the talk of depth and innovation in VF seems to drown out any critique of Sega’s fighter. Yet at EVO it seemed high level play revolved around 3 or 4 moves or combos per fighter.
General opinion shows Tekken is all button mashing and Mishima clones but does anyone else feel that Tekken has some substance and isnt all flash and that Virtua Fighter is alot of PPPK, PPKK, etc?
I typed a response that was entirely too long, then asked myself, “why?” It was a convincing argument.
The short version is that VF5 characters have between 100ish (Goh) and 212ish (Vanessa) distinct movements/attacks each, with most characters hovering between 160 and 190. However, movelist length is as relevant to game depth as pretty backgrounds or nice menu fonts. As for ‘general opinion,’ non-hardcore fighting gamers (which is to say, most gamers - we are a niche audience) think ALL fighters are button mashers. Any person who actually knows anything about fighters, however, knows that NONE of the worthwhile fighters are. Saying VF is about PPPK kind of clues me to which group you’re a bigger part of; that’s like saying Half-Life 2 is about the 9mm pistol.
Why does every thread have to devolve into which game has a bigger peepee (assuming a thread wasn’t about that from the outset)? Look, I know it’s the internet, but try to think longer than 10 seconds sometimes. Does Bioshock being good somehow make Half-Life 2 suck? If so, how? Obviously Tekken and VF (and every other popular tourney fighter) have dedicated fanbases for a reason. There isn’t going to be some Mad Max showdown where people who favor the imaginary ‘losing game’ get killed. Play what you want and stop crapping on games you don’t play, people. Especially not for wrong reasons.
Hey mods… close this thread for my sake. Thanks to some of the posters here who have opened my eyes to my idiocy. Im picking up my copy of VF5 tomorrow. Im far from high level in either Tekken or VF but with an online aspect Im sure Ill pick things up.
