Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown console thread

ShinZ has been playing VF since 2, he played DR casually but played more when 5 was scarce. Unless you have some footage of him playing something earlier than DR? Cause that would be dope!

That sounds like a good idea. I’m not up for it but maybe someone from VFDC would be.

i’d like to know how VF is incredibly hard to learn…i mean i learned it when i was a small child.

Another match with me knocking out the rust.

My latest match vids. I wanna say that I think Akira and Jacky are fucking hella overpowered in this game, but it takes a lot of talent to really bring both characters up to the level where you could say they’re OP, but that’s just my opinion.

IMO VF is hard to learn because it’s hard to visually teach how to “properly” play VF. You can’t see when people are doing Evade-Guard-Throw Escape so it can be difficult for new players to grasp if they were successful or not. I mean, I can tell how someone how to do it, but it doesn’t mean they’ll know they were able to do it.

Character-specific combos and stance specific combos aren’t necessarily hard to learn IMO; people just use that as an excuse not to pick up the game. TONS of other fighting games have the same kind of combos but they’re still widely played.

Heheh, “VF is realistic” is such a meme from the 90s where its only competition is SF and other 2D FGs.
These days we have the sports fighters that actually try to be realistic (although such an approach has cons in gameplay & stuff.)

I watched a couple of vids showing the thought process and how they adopted real fighting techniques from various martial arts for the game. Though I admit I don’t know the percentage of authentic moves. MMA games aren’t really the best to display all fighting styles because MMA itself has become it’s own style favoring a few disciplines. Maybe VF isn’t the most realistic fighter anymore but it’s up there and I am a fan of traditional martial arts so from that standpoint it does well at what it is trying to achieve. I remember when the guys behind the UFC games wanted to see their game at evo, that is up to the players to decide I guess.

On the topic of VF dodging:
I also agree with the ignorance of people being scared of character specific combos. In 2d fighters there are certain combos that work only on bigger characters due to their hitbox, just look at Versus series. A lot of them are mandatory to learn as well like Sentinel only infinites in MvC2. So weight and hitbox based combos are pretty much the same thing imo.

For anyone who wants to play VF4Evo on PS3 they have a downloadable version of it on the EU PSN. VF4EVO is the best place to start due to the legendary training mode. TBH VF5FS will probably have a good one as well so it’s not mandatory. Just make a EU account and buy a EU PSN card online if you want Evo. Don’t ask me why this isn’t available on NA PSN…

Oh, Evo is on EU PSN? That’s news to me. But I do have my PS2 copy that I got used a few years ago. I’ll be using that as a means to give me a nice “primer”.

Maybe VF itself doesn’t have to change. But I do think the DOA5 collab could be a nice means to an end, especially since DOA is perceived as a much more “casual friendly” than VF itself is.

And if an AM2-headed “VFxDOA” is in the cards? I think it could be very good for business for Sega and Tecmo alike. For that matter, such a thing could be the closest thing I’ll get to the “Fighters Megamix 2” I’ve been wanting since I was a kid.

I was hoping for VF vs Tekken but DOA seems to be the closest from a gameplay standpoint, so I can agree with that. There apparently exists a leaked list of the DOA roster. If Sarah and Pai do exist it makes it easier for them to do a DOAxVF since 3 characters are finished at this point.

For me personally, VF being hard has all to do with the block button. I don’t like block buttons, can’t stand 'em. Will just have to learn to cope with it. The game itself? Not that hard, there are tutorials and such, although learning ETEG I can foresee being a bit daunting at first, but we’ll see.

I did hear that FS tightened up the window for TEs, is that true?

A lot of games have option selects and setups that aren’t obvious, some are really nasty and high damage/safe too. EDIT: they aren’t part of the intended design too, ew

ETEG and other defensive option selectis are essential to learn, but only inputting one escape should make it much easier. Fuzzy guard requires some precision but it’s not exceptionally difficult. Online? Maybe, but thems the brakes I guess. All defensive option selects are punishable too.

Right, it’s not a common feature. There are other aspects of VF that aren’t really analogous to other games as well IMO.

I played some vf5 on the 360 when it first came out. Nobody local played it though so I kinda forgot about it, but now I’m hype for the game again after messing around with it at NCR. Is the 360 version good for re-learning stuff, or has the game changed so much that its better to just wait for console FS?

Though FS has changed a lot make no mistake any training helps, it really depends on what your goal is. Personally I play a combination of VF5 on PS3 and VF4Evo just to brush up on core mechanics. 360 version has online play, I don’t know how many people are online but it should help quite a bit.

I just realize there is a FS thread in SRK!
Maybe it’s good that more people can join VFDC as well.

Just wanted to shout out to all the people I played in FS on Sunday at Final Round XV this year. I had a great time but I wish the Sega Representative would have let me record the footage.

Yeah I know. SRK is reporting on fighting games now not just unfinished games. j/k
