Its official I’ll be there count me in! Just bought my ticket!

I can see Roski walking a brisk pace with a cig hanging outta his mouth. Good thing the event is not for LUNG CANCER!

DG: It’ll be fun to hang out with you in our neck of the woods! What is your flight info?

I just may drive all the way to this…wanna get rocked in NGBC/XI. Also would be up for 3s, Slash, HnK.

Any suggestions on a place to stay?

Thanks, and hope to see you guys,
Josh.

Driving all the way from Ohio? Wow.

Well, there’s a ton of hotels around Carolina Place Mall…

My suggestion is the Holiday Inn across the street, where DG will be staying. It’s also probably the cheapest out of the hotels.

Oh okay, no problem. As long as you can get here around 1 PM, then the second round of 3rd Strike will probably be starting.
I think though since you might get a bye in 3S, since you finished right behind Jordan at the next NC tourney.

So, what’s the deal with the TVs? Any info?

Me and Bryan tested 3S and CvS2.

To both of us, 3S felt smooth.
As you recall, back at the first GameLAN’D tournament people on the big HDTVs were noticing considerable lag immediately within the first seconds of their matches. On these TVs, Bryan and I played for close to an hour and we didn’t notice it. Even Bryan said he noticed lag immediately at GameLAN’d, but here he said 3S felt fine. Bryan parried Remy’s SA1 on the first try with no difficulty. We also tested Alex’s Stungun in the corner…we could jab out easily. Bryan’s Genei-Jin combos worked fine. Urien’s unblockable worked. No lag on Hugo’s 720.
I haven’t even played 3S in about 2 months and I was parrying better than normal.

We also tried CvS2. Unfortunately, neither of us had played CvS2 since Final Round…so even though the game felt slower to me, it may have been just because I hadn’t played the game in a while.
At least, that’s what I thought until I tried CvS2 at home…after spending most of the night playing CvS2 on my CRT at home, I came to the conclusion that the TVs DID have input lag on CvS2. I don’t know if it has to do with the way CvS2 was ported to the PS2 (already the graphics and sound are way worse than the arcade) but it just wasn’t running terribly smooth.

So in conclusion,
–To me, 3S felt good enough for serious play, CvS2 felt too laggy.
–Bryan felt they both felt okay, but agreed that both games ran MUCH smoother than the big GameLAN’d HDTVs.

So here’s the scenario we face: GameLAN’d has the entire half of the store with about 8 monitors set aside for our tournament. They’d STRONGLY like to avoid us taking down all of their TVs and several different people bringing in a bunch of huge CRT TVs.
I believe some games will run fairly well on the TVs, others not so much.

Our solution: COMPROMISE
We bring in a FEW (3-4) smaller CRTs to the tournament to use for CvS2 and other smaller games that have issues.
Meanwhile, games that do run smoothly like 3S, GG, and Tekken are mostly played on LCDs *unless *a major issue pops.
I will be bringing a CRT. I can get 1 or 2 people to bring 2-3 more smaller (like around 20") CRT monitor TVs.

“Why only 3-4 CRT TVs?”
–Because Gamefrog doesn’t want us to bring in a bunch of TVs because they really have no spare space to put their own monitors, especially since their regular Sat customers are going to be around
–The tables at the store really don’t have the space to sit 6-8 CRTs, especially ones with large tubes.

“Why not just hold all the games on the 3-4 CRT TVs?”
–Time issues. With 10 planned tournaments and less than 10 hours, I want to makes sure we have time for every tournament. Yes we can cut the minor and free tournaments but I really want to see those go down:
Hokuto no Ken is brand new and people really want to play the game seriously.
We’ve still got dedicated ST players.
NC has some of the very best SNK players in the country and we have people coming from Ohio and Texas to play KOFXI and NGBC with the best.
I really want to start a new tradition with the free side tourney…giving people something extra to do when waiting between matches and getting people excited about fresh games.
–I also want to see if games like 3S and GG don’t have any major problems. That if way, if we find the tournaments run well without making people go through the trouble of bringing mountains of CRTs to the event then I say we should go with it. HD is the future and CRTs will eventually go the way of the dinosaur so if we can find a way to reduce or eliminate lag NOW, then I would say it is worth it.

We tested the TVs out the other day. From playing both CvS2 and 3S, I did not notice any lag whatsoever in either game. I was able to parry and JD both the first time I tried to, which means I had no time to adjust to any lag yet.

I would still suggest people bring CRTs if they’re able to, as we did not have a chance to test Guilty Gear or Marvel. We probably won’t need them, but it would be nice to have them in case of an emergency.

Edit: Shiki’s post showed up while I was typing. Please note, I did not feel any input lag at all in CvS2, which I did notice immediately at GameLAN’d (and nobody believed me until the tournament started where Lu and I demanded it be moved for our second match because it was so bad).

I don’t think Guilty Gear should be a problem…but I do hope the TVs are fine. Thanks for the update guys.

If needed, you could just use the CRTs that are brought and run shit nazi style like Tony. If it comes down to it, people would probably prefer waiting rather than laggy matches…I don’t know about Gamefrog though. Hopefully it’ll all work out.

I’ve got 3 or so 13" CRTs. They are small, but easy to move around. Keep us posted!

DC can run on VGA, if the store has some 20" CRT’s.

I’m not playing anything on any TV with any lag. I’ll bring a CRT myself if necessary, but any kind of lag, no matter how miniscule, is unacceptable.

The TV situation is already taken care of. I’ll let people know if we need any more TVs.

Cool. in that case…

Right now I’m planning to have around 4 CRTs at the event.

Tekken DR has proven to work fairly well on HDTVs with little problem, so I’m keeping it on those.
If people don’t want to play 3S on anything but CRTs, then so be it. As long as we have at least 3 TVs for the first couple of rounds for 3S and we start promptly at 12 PM we should have no trouble finishing with plenty of time for the other tournaments.

I would also urge people to tell the people at Gamefrog (www.gamefrogcafe.com) why there is a need for us to bring in a CRTs and to support our event.
Gamefrog is open to us running our tournaments anyway we like, which is why we have to show how important our tournaments are to us and how serious about our scene.
I would also say if you live in the Charlotte area that you can pay your door fee (but not tournament pots) ahead of time and put your name on the official registration list.
This will save a little bit of time on the day of the event so all you have to do is pick up your wristband and put your cash into the pots.

Majors whats up man! I’ll be getting in May 4th around 12:30 PM in the Charlotte Airport and I’ll be staying at the Holiday Inn Express and leaving out early May 6th back to Denton, Texas…dissecting and coming up with new plans to defeat The Triad hahahah!!!
