On paper it’s shitty Activision got greedy and decided to make people pay 3 times for 1 game. In reality it isn’t that big of a deal considering the content updates are significant and game changing rather than incremental updates like sports games. SC2 is designed for competitive play, the single player is tacked on as an afterthought just so it doesn’t get shitty reviews from critics that care about that crap.
I’d say afterthought is an undersell. The single player campaign is fantastic imo (the branching tech structure even provides some replay incentives!). But we fundamentally agree, if you’re expecting the meat of the SC2 experience to be the campaign, you’re barking up the wrong tree.
