^ I had to look up Ferry Corsten since I’m unfamiliar with him. And the fact that his track that he did for the upcoming DLC completely fits with MGR has sort of confirmed some suspicions I’ve had on the ‘genre’ that MGR’s OST is mostly comprised of. Listening to some of the original tracks before they went through Mr. Christopherson’s studio voodoo, they sounded waaaaaaaaaay heavier in the metal department.
Is there a name for what this genre is? Electronic Metal? Metaltronica?
Also thinking back on what I said earlier about music back then vs. now, I was trying to come up with what exactly it is that a lot of game music seems to be missing in comparison and MGR helped me. Character. I think that’s really what it boils down too. Orchestrated music can have character easily since the Mario Galaxy games do it. I was actually pleasantly surprised that the people responsible for the soundtrack weren’t Japanese.
It’s also interesting to compare what they had originally and what they had in game.
Find it quite interesting how they changed the lyrics and love the piano use for this especially in the actual game version. Sounds a lot better pulled forward.
MGR OST is pretty damn solid. There is some more ambient stuff in it for cutscenes and when you’re walking around but they did several of the themes in the game a few times to have the music match what’s going on screen which is what Sarangha mentioned earlier in his post. I agree wholeheartedly that it’s a technique that should probably be used in more because it’s godlike when done properly. Just listening to the tracks won’t give you a sense of it. Lemme see if I can’t find a couple videos as examples.
Metal Gear Ray Fight
When ‘Rules of Nature’ finally kicks in full gear…it’s so perfect. This is how you help make a game stick with you after you play it. Anyone who’s played this game will remember this music and it’ll instantly send them back to this moment.
I uploaded the music to LIVE A LIVE to Shadow’s site. Since I’m positive most have never played this game (heck, I haven’t), a bit of info. It was a SNES RPG that was only released in Japan in 1995 before Chrono Trigger. You can hear the whole soundtrack via YouTube playlist here. If you need anymore incentive to get this music, it was composed by Yoko Shimomura. I converted the SPC files to MP3 so the sound quality is quite good. All tracks loop twice, unlike the official OST.
Sonic Classic 2: Original Soundtrack. This is music from the PC freeware game of the same name. The music seems to use the sound font of Sonic 4 & Knuckles. This is from the same author that made the Sonicesque albums. Listening to this album on Bandcamp right now. Sounds good. It’s a name your price/free download.
I’ve been playing these alot lately and the whole soundtrack is dope I definitely like shared dig, Firebreath,Forgone Destruction, Botpack 9, and Xtremely Xecutable. So glad I got that unreal pack on steam best $13 I have ever spent.
