Video Game General v8.01D : PC Gaming Golden Age, Big Box (Part 1)

People will never get paid what they’re worth

Does not mean we have to accept that

Well I mean, the reality is, you are worth what you are getting paid. If you were worth more, you’d be getting paid more. People do (myself included) always think they “should” be getting paid more and worth more simply because everyone wants more money. That is just the nature of the beast.

There’s a reason my salary is over 4x what it was when I graduated school and got my first real job though. It’s because I know my worth and where I am with my skills.

I regretted staying at my first job out of school for 6 years with minimal raises, knowing other people making significantly more than me, but without that, my journey would probably not have taken me where I am at now, so there really are no regrets. But that alone made me realize I was not being paid what I was “worth” and I knew I could make, and when I left there, I got an instant 25% raise. Now though that is chump change.

What about streamers? They get paid to play videogames. You think they get sick of them?

Welp, if I was forced to play Fortnite (which pretty much guarantees the big viewer numbers) then yes…

Well a smart streamer builds their brand in a way where they can switch games as they wish so they don’t completely burn out. Some don’t do that and end up being stuck on one game because that’s where their notoriety comes from and…yeah, there have been a few streamers that just start hating the game that makes them money.

Sounds like some spoiled brats to me :joy:

Yeah, like for me there’s art… something I’ve enjoyed since at least kindergarten…mainly good ol’ fashioned illustration… it’s stops being such an enjoyable thing for me the more it becomes a “job”… the context of something being your “work” gradually kills the enthusiasm for it…for me, at least.

Streamers— I think ol’ “Dark” (Phil) genuinely hates most games and has hated them for years now… he never seems to be having fun with anything he plays live on stream. Interesting thing is that I think he probably feels trapped too— a “regular” job at this point won’t pay anything near what he gets streaming…yet he seems to hate playing the games…sometimes it’s quite obvious he’d rather be doing anything else.

Sounds judgmental as fuck to me.

No matter how much you might love something to start, having to spend hours upon hours playing it every single day can wear on some people. Especially if the game ends up being made worse over time.

I don’t disagree with that. But “having to spend hours upon hours” playing videogames? They don’t have to play videogames. Good on them for creating a niche for themselves. But if I ever heard anyone complain about having to play videogames for a living I’d laugh in their fucking face.

Oh I understand the sentiment “Well these people should get normal fucking jobs anyway, it’s pathetic.” But what’s the use in gatekeeping? “You’re only allowed to be depressed or complain if it’s about REAL jobs”.

Everything in life can cause mental deterioration and attempting to minimize that is why mental health is still often treated as a joke.

You know how I know this? Because I feel as you’d want people to feel. “Oh, I’m better off than others so I have no place to complain so I shouldn’t complain.” That thought will run through your head over, and over and over again no matter how bad your mental state gets until eventually you just crack like I ended up doing last week. Very few people here know this but I basically had to be talked down. And part of that was due to feeling that my own depression was unearned and unimportant in comparison to others that have bigger problems.

It’s not a joke. Even if you feel there are far bigger issues, far bigger problems for others to deal with, when people complain or feel miserable you should still stop and listen.

Sorry you went through that, man.

For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t laugh at anyone being depressed. That’s not what I was getting at.

But I would absolutely laugh at some kid crying about having to play videogames.

Streaming is weird. I’d do it for fun with a few homies watching, but I would never want to pursue it as a career.

Until you find your niche, you’ll have to play shit you don’t want to, which makes the thing you enjoy doing into a job.

Then when you do, you have to deal with strangers on the internet yelling at you. Fuck that. I’ve learned that most people don’t have anything worthwhile to say
