Video Game General v8.01D : PC Gaming Golden Age, Big Box (Part 1)

I imagine its all behind another paywall.

Online Free, after you pay for Xbox Live, Game Pass, X Cloud and MS Office 360.

You aren’t the only one.

Lots of people care about owning physicals still. Like me for instance. I use Game Pass because it’s cheap as dirt and I’ve gotten to try an unbelievable amount of games without spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars. A lot of those games on there you can’t even get physically, like Carrion. A game I know for a fact we’re both enjoying.

You can still use the disc model this Gen and you can use it next Gen even. It never went anywhere bro. If people didn’t care about physical media you wouldn’t even be seeing the option to use it next Gen, period.

I don’t care about gamepass at all, and all I need to play is the hardware, tv, and game. That is a large part of why I go out of my way to get physical copies of games if it’s an option. I think I paid like $13 more for Dead Cells on Switch just to have the physical copy.

I forgot who it was that said it in the thread, but if gamepass fails to install a game on your PC it still takes up the install space that later very hard to delete.

Game Pass would be more expensive for me than owning the games. Looking at other multiplats I own and the games on the service. I’d be paying the fee just to use them.

Younger generation probably loving it though. If wasn’t sure of what i wanted but just liked to veg, this would be awesome.

Hell yeah…Sexyuka is Back!!!

I think disc drives are on next gen to boost backwards compatibility. When it comes to actual next gen games the discs are simply a delivery system to download the games to the console. It’s a novelty.

Well, games have both grown on complexity and size, so trying to stream the game from discs to memory is not feasible.

Sure, that could very well be, people care about plenty of stuff for the pure novelty of it. That’s my point. There’s really a myriad of reasons people would still care about physical media.

For people who prefers physical over digital do so because it gives them ownership. That ownership goes up in smoke if the game isn’t depended on the disc to play. The platform could enact all kinds of wacky DRM like limited installs, locking the game to the console, etc. I can’t imagine those who prefer physical will be satisfied with just lip service.

I’m confused, are the PS5 and Xbox confirmed to have some kind of DRM that can lock you out of disc based games…?

Not that I’m aware of. Those possibilities are very real for those that still cling to physical media. These companies would prefer if customers to move from ownership to access as that will give them greater control. Remember, that was original plan for the Xbone.

The thing about Gamepass for me personally is that it’s just a buncha old shit. And I don’t really play old shit. Typically if there is a game I want I buy it at launch. So having this big library of old games I never cared about isn’t going to make me care about them now. Although I did pay $1 for a month of it so I could play Ori Will of the Wisps instead of paying $30. I wanted to buy it and give the devs $30 but in the end that would ahve kind of been a waste because I know I won’t go back to it since I beat it.

It sounds like though for XSX they are going to have all first party games on Gamepass at launch, which is a really good selling point for people who give a shit about Halo, Gears, and Forza still. Which I don’t.

Oh, no doubt. That’s the type of anti consumer shit that got Microsoft off on the wrong foot at the start of the generation. I mean don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t put it past these companies to try and pull that shit again. But I highly doubt it. Just seems odd to try and counter my argument with hypotheticals.

The DRM is that if you dont have the disc on the tray, you cant play the game.

Game Pass has new releases on the day of release man. Like, all the time. Gears 5 was available at release. Same as Carrion. Crackdown 3. Streets of Rage 4. Astroneer. Journey To The Savage Planet. Outer Worlds. Tons of stuff man.

Your example with Ori is exactly why I love it though, just multiplied by quite literally dozens of games lol. Like, Creature In The Well for example. I probably never would have tried that game had it not been on Game Pass. I ended up really enjoying it, and I didn’t have to pay $20 or whatever for a game I’ll probably never come back to.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve played literally dozens of games like that, that managed to surprise me. Gears 5 alone would still have costed me more money than what I’ve paid for this service in the past 7 months. That’s a lot of value you if you play a lot of games.

Like I said, I will always prefer physical shit. But a lot of this stuff on here is hard to get physically anyway and new stuff pops up on the list all the time. Oh yeah, and I can play Xbox “exclusives” on my PC, usually with even better graphics.

I dunno. I think it’s rad.

Yeah see I did not know that was the case. That is pretty good.

The thing is Xbox hardly has jack shit I want to play so there is that too. Ori is the only (exclusive) Xbox game I have played in years. The first one was probably the last exclusive I played prior to that.

Yeah. That’s why I think it’s really nice their “exclusives” are on PC as well. Even some of the older gems like Alan Wake.
