Video Game General 6.5: Now with more surprise mechanics

Last i checked, nintendo backed off from that due to backlash and potential lawsuit.

Disney has sharper claws than Nintendo and they aren’t afraid if offending a bunch of gamers

Yes they did back off. But they still did it.

Nah, maybe you’re just ignorant to the context of the situation. Getting new MVC content, or at the very least a Marvel 2 re-release, is more likely now than it ever has been since infinite.

With Disney having control back of X-Men now and various other properties that existed in Marvel 2, it’s perfectly reasonable to theorize that they’re letting Capcom push the franchise again.

I mean, think about it for even a second. Why would MvC2 be at Evo? Certainly not because Mr. Wiz has such a profound and deep love for the FGC and wants to see a revival. Evo is a marketing convention. Has been for as long as I can remember now. So if he’s adding an almost 20 year old game to the lineup this year, I can almost guarantee you it was financially motivated. There’s no better way to get this franchise back into the minds of the public, while also being able to lead up to some kind of announcement.

Marvel 2 re-release? Marvel 4? Marvel Versus Capcom: The Tactical Turn Based RPG? Who knows. But it seems painfully obvious to me that this tournament is leading up to some kind of announcement.

I think that you are being too optimistic here.
Everything points out that it was Evo and not capcom the one that pushed for mvc2 as an event.

The fact is that the mvc brand, for all its popularity with the usa fgc, is not a top seller, underperforming even with mvc3/umvc3 which was a well received game and had a lot of good will all thanks to sf4.

I dont consider this a sign of capcom trying to push the brand.
But if this goes well, i can see capcom trying to gauge any chance with the brand again by re releasing the collection on the psn for current gen, or mvc3.
But even that would depend on how sour they are about the mvci fiasco.

Remember, they were even willing to not do sf5 until sony came in and money hated the project.

Their fighting game division is in shreds so you probably wouldn’t want a new MvC, I’d settle for ports/collections.

If we get nothing then its a missed opportunity for the 20th anniversary, but I wouldn’t be heartbroken either since my hopes aren’t high

MVC2 is back at this year’s EVO as a special one-time only event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the game’s release and because Marvel vs Capcom has been in the main lineup of EVO literally since its inception in 2002 up until 2018, and even then that was because of Infinite flopping hilariously hard.

That’s literally it. You’re way overthinking it by going with the “oh it’s only because of money” or “new MVC title coming” line

I mean, yeah. That’s exactly what I said. Evo is pushing Marvel 2. And why would Evo push Marvel 2 without some type of incentivization? Doesn’t make any sense for me for this game to all of a sudden appear out of the blue, and I know for a fact it’s not just Joey’s need to see a community revival.

It’s not a matter of optimism. I wouldn’t consider the possibility if I thought it was anything other than possible. It’s an 8 man invitational. It’s purely being put in the lineup for the spectacle. Why not make it a normal tournament where anyone can participate? Probably because it’s being used to garner attention for the franchise instead of being an actual place for competition and community.

I understand not wanting to get your hopes up, but I also think it’s pretty obvious they want to at the very least announce something once the game is fresh off people’s minds after top 8.

Marvel 3 already exists on current Gen. I think it’s most likely that they’ll re-release MvC2, or like you said the collection containing the first game and MSH.

But again, we’ll see. I’m not saying any of this is concrete. But I can’t see them not using this tournament as a platform to do something with.

This is how stupid shit has gotten in the FGC thanks to how EVO has turned into FG E3. Instead of simply enjoying the fact that we’re getting another run of MvC2 we have to spend countless hours searching for the actual reason it’s there.

Again, you are setting yourself for dissapointment.
I dont think that Evo needs more incentinve than this year being the 20 anniversary for mvc2, a game that its legacy is important to the tournament series since it was one of the main events for years and probably helped it be where it is right now.

Outside that, i dont think that Disney/Marvel or Capcom cared about it.

Idgaf about the reason or motive. I’m just glad the GOAT is getting to stand in the spotlight again.

Oh, so we pretending Marvel 2 is Marvel 3 now or? Because you can’t seriously be saying having Marvel 3 in the lineup holds the same implications that having Marvel 2 in the lineup does.

Literally the only person here assuming shit is you. You’re shutting out any possibility of anything being released or announced because of your own pessimism. Which is fine, but don’t parade around like it’s fact and that you’re better than everyone for having such powerful insight.

I’m not setting myself up for anything. I think my expectations are pretty realistic. If they don’t announce anything, I won’t be surprised either. But I’m almost willing to bet this game isn’t in the lineup purely out of some kind of tradition. It’s honestly hilarious to me that you guys think Joey cares that it’s the 20th anniversary of the game.

The fact we even discussing/arguing is nothing but good, cant pay for this kind od publicity. I might need to go inadvertedly start shit on other forums

EDIT: The only person legit wrong is the one who thinks they can stream Disney content without consulting them first. lol

I am sure some where at some time someone at Marvel is a FGC fan and helped for Marvel/Disney to make their blessings over Evo.

And if not, there no bad press for Marvel/Disney.

I think it is fair to be “pessimistic” here (I prefer realistic)
Consider this.
A) After the MCU became huge, Disney/Marvel became more of a control freak, trying to force and push not only what chars could be on the roster, but how they are animated and what they could do.

B) Even MVC#/UMVC3 underperformed hardly, selling a total combined of 1.3 million units across 3 platforms (Ps3, 360 and Vita).
This in part due the tiny window they had to use the license, which when the game was gaining momentum, announced just 3 months later of the release of vanilla that 5 months from there they will be launching a revision of the game, souring any potential buyers outside the most hardcore fans and the fgc.

C)The license has become expensive to use.

D) If a MVC4 happens (it could do eventually, but i dont really see it so soon), i dont expect any returning char to play like they did in old games, since they will probably try to put them more in line with their MCU counterparts, since they are the most recognizable now for the general public, which would make sense from a bussines stand point.

In fact, i think that it would make more sense for a company like capcom to try to reinvigorate the interest by 1st releasing a pure Marve fg. But that is me.

Well, we agree there. I think a re-release of some sort is more likely than anything. I really don’t think we’re getting a Marvel 4, but I’m not shutting out the possibility.

I don’t know why you’re being so confrontational in a civil discussion, but whatever dude, have it your way

Countless hours? A small discussion between 3 people over the course of half an hour somehow equates to “countless hours”…?

Are people really this butthurt even just over the discussion of the possibility of seeing something come out of this franchise again? Jesus christ man. Battered wife syndrome got ya’ll jaded as hell to the point we can’t even DISCUSS possibilities. Lmfao.

An addendum to my post.
To hammer the point of how unknown the MVC franchise can be for the outsiders of the fgc.
I remember than in a marvel centric reddit some years ago after the release of mvci, people were asking for an injustice like game for the marvel brand.

One of the tarjet markets, the marvel fans, dint even knew that MVCI was a thing.
It also shows that there can be a market for a Marvel centric FG.

the MVC series was the culmination of a journey of both Marvel centric games and crossovers during the 90’s.

Right now, i think that capcom, or any other company willing to try, can start that type of journey again.
In the case of capcom, perhaps doing a MCU fg will be the most sound decision instead of doing a new MVC game.
But tnh, i would prefer more of a game that pays homeage to the comic artstyle like what DBFZ did with DBZ instead of a photorealistyc game.
