Continuing doing walkthoughs of PS+ titles
 This time it’s Rayman Legends

don’t have to say much besides the fact that I think it’s a lovely platformer and the unique artstyle/engine Ubisoft have created for modern Rayman games is just great, thus making Origins and Legends one of those timeless games that will never age thanks to their visuals

The levels are pretty varied, the game itself provides a fair amount of challenge, Legends’ music levels are simply incredible, and it’s coop friendly so you can party up with I think up to 3 other players locally, guaranteed to have some fun time

100%'ing every level means that you don’t just go into a straight predetermined path - you have to explore each room a bit. Sometimes there’s a secret just outside your field of view and you need a couple of clever jumps to get there. Sometimes it’s in plain sight but you might miss it on first run. Sometimes it’s literally right at the start of the level and you just need to walk left instead of right.

The game has no “upgrades” system or anything so outside of specific situations when a mage friend gives you super punch or a fly friend assists you by moving platforms, meaning that all the abilities are right there at the start - faster running, spin punch, sliding, wall running, etc, which means that the game provides you all the mechanics right off the bat and you gradually need to master them along with levels increasing in difficulty (starting out as some simple platforming and culminating in a boss fight, followed by the aforementioned musical level)

There’s a total of 5 “worlds” to explore, and each unlocks as you save more Teensies (which are big-nosed blue creatures that inhabit Rayman’s universe), who were kidnapped by the game’s villains, so it’s not enough for you to just run through the levels - you actually need to put a little bit more effort, especially if you want to unlock the final world. Alongside Teensies you also collect Lums (consider these your Points score per level) - the Lums are given either by defeating enemies, saving Lums, collecting big Coins, or they’ll just float in a chain. The first Lum in a chain is always of a purple color so you know which one to start, and you have to follow the chain. Purple Lums give double the score. Fail to collect them in order and the chain breaks, so you just get 1 point instead of 2.

Once you finish a level - you’re graded in two different metric. One is how many Teensies you saved, which grants trophies up to Gold, (usually it’s 8 regular Teensies and 2 hidden, sometimes it’s just 3 but in that case the Teensies will be placed alongside your path so you can’t really miss them), and the other is how many Lums you collected. Collect a certain amount of Lums and you’re also given a trophy up to Gold, alongside a special Lucky Ticket. The Tickets are just a method of unlocking Creatures (they give give some bonus Lums), Teensies (but there are only a few ticket-specific ones, don’t worry), or Levels from Rayman Origins. Yup, Ubisoft actually included 5 full Level sets from Origins in Legends, so in actuality you have a total of 10 Worlds to explore, which is really cool. Really there’s 11 Worlds, but the final one is just special Music levels, but I’ll talk about these later.

So basically to 100% a level you need to save 3-10 Teensies, and collect a total of 100-600 Lums. The Lums count is per run, meaning you’ll often have to completely redo a level, while Teensies are saved inbetween runs, meaning you can return later , e.g. if you haven’t saved enough yet to unlock the next World or Level (and yes, Level unlocking is also Teensies-dependent, so they’re an essential part of progression through the game).
As you can tell, collecting Lums isn’t as important, but if you want you can unlock alternate skins/characters,

Anyways, once you clear a World - there are three additional challenges you can do. One is directly unlocking alternate skins for Barbara, who is a third completely new playable character, (though “ingame” the skins considered as her sisters or something).
Two is a Time Trial where you need to run through a specific section of a level you’ve cleared before (and the section itself is altered visually) in 40 to 60 seconds, clear it in time and you can save up to 3 Teensies.
And the third is Invasion, which is basically a Time Trial but with a major twist - your character is followed by a Shadow version who repeats all your actions and movement (and can also hurt you), so not only do you have to move as fast as possible, you at times are required to quickly think on the fly how to kill all the enemies or activate a switch etc without running into your shadow. The reward is the same as regular Time Trials, which is up to 3 Teensies

I guess lastly I should mention the final World in “main campaign” so to speak. You saw how earlier I said that each World culminates in a special musical level? Well, this World is those exact musical levels, except each is remixed in a way - every song is done in 8-bit style (which is common between all 6 levels), but as you run along - the screen gets fucked up by artifacts. Sometimes it gets super pixelated, sometimes there’s noise which obstructs your vision, sometimes the image is flipped, and so on. This creates a very challenging version of a level you cleared before, and you have to pay attention to the music itself, because the way these levels are done is you can follow the audio cues almost exclusively to know when to attack or jump, which is kinda cool. I can’t say I appreciate the visual fuckery going on here, but hey it’s still a cool challenge.

so
yeah, that’s about it. My only issues with Legends (and by extension Origins since they share the gameplay formula) is that sometimes the controls can be a bit “unesponsive” (for example I want to spin punch -> jump to make the jump itself travel faster and higher, but Rayman may still be stuck in the air just pixels above the ground, so pressing the punch button makes him do an air attack instead), and because of the artstyle it’s often REALLY hard to judge where are the enemies’ hitboxes are or where Rayman’s hurtbox is, which can be super annoying when nagivating tighter sections full of spikes and such.

Other than that it’s a wonderful game and I hope Ubisoft does a new entry nextgen. 8.5/10

Yooooo there’s a finally a guy doing a shmup(bullet hell?) for AGDQ. At least I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.

Well, shmups don’t tend to lend themselves well to speedrunning since almost all of them have set scrolling. So the only way to speedrun is to quick kill bosses in most cases.

What are they running though?

I’ve seen people do Star Fox 64 speed runs. It was just them spamming boost, killing select enemies and hoarding bombs.

I know that’s not a shmup but that’s the closest thing I can think of.

Pokemon twitter may have goofed

True, but it’s still fun seeing them dodge all the bullets on a live stream.

Mushihime-sama. Never heard of it.

Boost actually accelerates the screen scroll though doesn’t it? Most shmups don’t have anything like that aside from killing enemies ASAP to reduce lag.

Ah ok. Well, they have been having those Tetris exhibitions so I guess they’re looking at it the same way.

That game is sick, I’ll have to watch later

Anyone have 4000 bucks lying around so I can buy a 128 core processor?

128 fucking cores man. It’s not meant for consumers, they’re supposed to go for the 16/24/32 cores but still. Compare it to the PS2 era where all consoles and PC’s at the time had a whopping 1 core processor, or even phones these days which have 8 cores and up.

Tech is getting so crazy man. These next-gen “real time” demos look ridiculous too, like how RE2/DMCV look when they’re in cutscenes right before they transition back to gameplay
just immense detail across the board. Next-gen consoles are supposed to be super beefy too, they’re powered by these new AMD CPU’s.

It’s hype stuff man.

128 is the threads not cores lol. Even for the ultra high end 64 cores is insane. What’s even crazier is the mobos for those CPUs start at $400 at the low end.

Yeah, but with hyperthreading or whatever AMD names their version of hyperthreading 64 cores with a 128 threads=128 cores. My 3700X is 8core/16 threads and task manager sees it as a 16 core and it was the same with my old processor.

The mobos for that cost as much as my 3700X.

I’m super hype for all of the new tech hitting this year. :star_struck:
