Video Game General 6.5: Now with more surprise mechanics

so, I went to a different(better) Wal-mart and noticed they had a few of the Arcade 1-UP machines actually out on display…these are better than I thought, actually… see, this is how ya sell something because the temptation is that much stronger for me now. They had a TMNT one which has the first game AND Turtles in Time. I also spotted the Marvel Super Heroes machine and a Mortal Kombat one which has 1, 2 and 3, though the cabinet art design is from part 2, which is perfect, imo…it was the best looking one, imo. (multiples is the way to go; I’d feel better about buying a machine that has more than 1 game on it. Even though TMNT also has 4 joysticks, it still seems a bit much to drop 400 on just 2 games.)
The Turtles machine is more expensive though, at 400…the other ones I see tend to be 300. It does seem kinda scummy that they purposely design these to be extremely short and then try to sell you a “riser” thing to make it the appropriate height…basically creating a problem and then selling the solution for extra.

That is one hell of a room, goddayum

Well a Sanwa JLF is about $20 to $25 each, not to mention the cost of buttons. Although the parts in the Arcade 1-UP machines are of lesser quality I can imagine that raised the base price a bit.

Even then the riser/ Base might not be the right height for some people.
If someone is handy at woodworking making their own would be a better solution.

Also having the cab in two pieces will make it easier to move.

I knew someone who basically made their own Neo Geo Cab from scratch, they made the whole thing modular, its comes apart in 3 sections and the control panel is also removable. They did it so it be easier to place into their basement.

Yeah thanks, it gets put to use. It was funny last night because all the little kids were playing PSVR which shows up on the projector, and all the old heads like myself were playing old school games on my arcade cabinet. We didn’t end up with any tournaments going just because it was kind of hectic so we just played random games.

It was cool when I came downstairs and saw like 6 dudes crowded around the arcade cabinet. That shit brought back so much memories of playing in the arcades.

And I can’t even count how many times people joked about “put your quarter up to get next”. It got old quick. And we had no quarters.

Those A1up cabs man, I was trying to get one for my son to put downstairs too but I don’t think I’ll do that. They are just too little. Yeah they look neat but I dunno, they just look and feel so cheap when you use one (and they are so it makes sense). But there is no way 2 adults can play side by side on those things, let alone 4 player on TMNT lol. Last night on my full sized cab even playing SF2 2 player we couldn’t even fit comfortably. Everyone is bumping shoulders and/or playing at a slight angle.

IIRC, the 1up cab’s are that small because your meant to be sitting when using them.

Whatever the reason is, they are too small for 2 adults to play 2 player. Sitting or standing. Just look at the dimensions they are narrow as hell. Also the SF2 one that I saw in store, the freaking artwork on the control panel was worn away from people playing. I took my finger and just rubbed it and it was rubbing off. They don’t have a plastic overlay. But, you can buy one for an extra fee from A1up!

I thought about snagging one of those myself for a second, but they seem meant for little kids. I’d like to have an arcade machine in my game room, but the room is too small and I don’t know that I can justify spending the money for a cabinet to play games I have on my PS4 anyway.

Have you seen those little table top MK1, PAC Man, etc machines they sell at Wal Mart? The retro arcade thing is really hitting a high!

Yeah I went on a Walmart “spree” to see if any of them had the SF2 cab on sale for $150 or less but had no luck. That was like 3 weeks ago. Since then I’ve pretty much lost interest but look on brickseek every now and then. If I saw one for $150 I’d get it. The only one I have interest in is SF2 cabinet though just because of the 6 button layout.

…and the Pacman one looks great since it’s the original design, but for some reason it doesn’t include Ms. Pac-man, which I always found to be the better game. The ultimate would be having a cabinet like that will most or all of the good Pac-man games though…I don’t want the sidescrolling and 3d “Adventure” shit that would come later in the 16-bit eras(?), but 1 cabinet with the classic, Ms. Pac-man, Super Pac-Man, maybe Jr., and the more recent Pac-Man C.E. games would be the ultimate thing, imo. Surely these companies like Bandai Namco and the others with classic IPs should realize they’d probably move more units if you load up the cabinets with a more “complete” collection…if it was like that instead of 1 or 2 games, I’d probably have bought a few of them a long time ago…somewhat realizing a dream from childhood—I always imagined making my own “arcade” in my house at some point.

M$ hasn’t sent out many Scarlett dev kits because they are trying to surprise Sony

The dev kit that is getting sent out isn’t final spec…I really hope what they mean by ‘surprising Sony’ doesn’t involve suddenly squeezing more Ram in the thing last minute and making another 360.

M$ plans to have a first party game release every 3-4 months on Scarlett

The SF2 cabs look like something you could make out of plywood if you really applied yourself. Are the parts patterned after the buttons and sticks from the original cabinets or no? To me, that’s where it would be either worth it or not.

That’s not what Jason Schreier is saying…and apparently MS are just behind the schedule in general

God, if they fuck this one up again…

It’s patterened after it but it’s not the same buttons/sticks. I don’t know if they use real Sanwa parts or not but if not, they are knock offs. I’d be surprised if they are genuine Sanwa parts just because of the crap quality of everything else on the cab, but I could be wrong.

I believe it when I see it, Phil Spencer killed more titles under development than he acquired.

It could backfire horribly on them too.
Sony played M$ with DRM schemes and always online requirements last gen, and M$ took that bait so hard that they are still trying to recover.

They will. Phil Spencer can only undo so much damage from Ballmer, then he goes and does a whole host of his own fuck ups.

I think I’ve finally cracked. I have a photo album on my FB of every amiibo I have. I keep looking through it hating the quality of most the photos. So I’m actually considering retaking pictures of every amiibo figure I have. Which is all 173 of them that have been released to date.

If I do end up doing this I think I’ll end up doing it slowly. Likely by release wave. If I try to tackle them all at once I’ll likely get too stressed out or get anxious about quality of photos and never finish the project.

Someone send help

I bought that Kill La Kill fighting game. This has to be my last purchase because my wallet is already on suicide watch.

Had a buddy over to play some Street Fighter and we ended up playing this for hours instead, lol. The game is fun as hell, and gorgeous to boot. This is one of the few arena fighters I’ve ever played that I can see myself putting a ton of time into. Also definitely gonna watch the show now.

I’ll have more thoughts once I clear story and play online a little bit.

Put the amiibo down, I would suggest reviewing the prices you paid for them and focus on the pee stick for the Link figure to mellow on them.

@wellman What? Why would I do that? I don’t want to sell them. I have no intentions of ever selling them.

They’re one of the few things I still genuinely look forward to every time a new figure is announced/released.
