Effort. Fan mods of the orignal PC version are superior. Which I guess is the best way to play this game for now.
Sort of, they just used a algorithm to upscale all the 2D backgrounds, then patch the game to accept the larger image files.
A Remaster is the Orignal game with some minor changes, mostly quality of life improvements rather than graphical.
Keep in mind everything that been ported in the last 10 years is based off the old Windows 95 port and not the PS1 game as Square lost the source code to the PS1 game, but the PC port survived. And you notice huge differences in dialogue from the English versions of both as the PC version was built from an Unfinished version of the Japanese PS1 game.
I think they even got some of the old devs from the original game to try and reconstruct as much of the ps1 code as they could? I mean thereâs a reason why FFVIII has constantly gotten shafted when it comes to ports and re-releases. This recent one is prob the most love itâs gotten yet.

Theyâre also using the original PS1 soundtrack and not the PC version soundtrack which uses a slightly different MIDI library.
^ love this
Yea the orignal PC version was terrible
Because they lost the FF8 source code as well.
If it was not for Rom sites, alot of old games would not get ports to modern consoles, including Nintendo and the VC on the Wii and 3Ds and now on the switch.
Most Japanese video game companies were bad at preserving their source code during that era. People just didnât realize that these things could be valuable down the line.
I donât see why a developer needs the source code in particular to make ports. Some of the better remasters have reversed engineer the retail releases. Thatâs what Bluepoint games does.
so i guess i should wait on playing ff8 remaster? i got the steam version of the old one with black mages soundtrack and other shit patched in. the only advantage the new seems to offer in new character models.
In the case of FFVIII (and most FFs from that period), the more easily ported versions they could work off from were based on older code and have a number of stuff under the hood that doesnât actually work right.
Also, Bluepointâs SOTC release for PS4 is a remake not a remaster. Most of their actual remasters still use the original code.
Reverse engineering is more costly than just rewriting code where is needed.
When r.e. you need to take machine code and translate it into code.
Add that depending of the machine your game is coded for, it could have some stuff that complicates the r.e. process.
Also, not many people are capable of r.e.
It takes some special kind of knowledge since you are working with the most low level type of coding, assembler and hexadecimal.
And those actually used the original code (specifically, the PAL release).
Add that they are a 1st party studio, so they have a better access to the documentation of the architecture of the ps2.

Posted this in the Switch thread, may as well post it here.
the PvZ franchise didnât have a good game since the original
