Yo not saying the games looked bad. But like alot of games shown looked similar, not in theme or etc. But yall know what I mean, like while I do appreciate God of War gameplay change that gameplay is kinda like everything else.
Im tryna think of how to word it without sounding like a debbie downer but I guess it seems like AAA is more of a genre now than a category or budget. Like even the days Gone shit I thought it was TLOU2 until it i saw it was more frantic, but that also looms similar to something lime State of Decay and etc.
Like I said not sure how to word it without sounding negative lol
While I personally like what I saw of God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn…
It’s essentially that “open-world” third-person action-adventures have become the new FPS, as in, all the big budgets and AAA production values are going into that genre. Notice how there isn’t anything of other genres coming from these big studios other than FPS/TPS, or the usual “story-driven”, scripted event stuff-- No Puzzlers, no RPGs, no Fighters, Platformers, etc.
At least, nothing of other genres not from Japanese developers…
It’s just another indictment of the malaise the industry is mired in currently- No one can afford to take huge risks, so they are playing it safe with the style and tone of all these big productions.
Notice how everyone is pushing VR- part of that is that VR games themselves are less expensive to develop and allow the devs to more effectively control what the player sees and controls of the environment and scripting.
Basically, games cost too much to produce, studios are looking to control costs, VR is a nice “distraction” that is buying everyone some more time until they can figure out what their next moves will be.
You know what needs a shoutout? AA games. Games aiming for AAA quality, but are very cost effective. Dunno any other AA games other than Hellblade atm, but I believe NT have stated the game only really needs 200K sells at $40 or so to break even.
I could be fucking wrong though. Anyway, just thought it was worth mentioning when you brought up rising costs.
Anyone know whatever happened to that old video of Kaz Harai being interviewed on the console wars? He was some really dumb shit, but funny (Sony mobsters gun down Sega mobsters).

This was a big talking point with The Witcher 3 since it wss a AAA game at a fraction of the cost.

What’s funny is the marketing campaign for the Witcher 3 cost more than the development of the game.
*Here lies the remains of the hollowed husk that was once a man. A man, who died of the hype. For once he laid eyes upon the glorious radiance that was Insomniac’s Spider-man, a shuddering force overtook his body as he shook and convulsed across his living room floor for 3 straight hours, until finally passing. Some say he voided his bowels, some say he did not. But one thing was for certain…
The hype was real.*

What’s funny is the marketing campaign for the Witcher 3 cost more than the development of the game.

Plus, CD Projekt Red confirms that 1,500 people around the world worked on the game.
Cost about 81 million to make and the described marketing push seemed to be a nightmare.
500 different voice actors with a full vo in over 7 languages… Nuts.
My in-depth review of Sony’s E3 conference:
Spoiler
my friend I whole heartedly agree
I could not be happier to have bought a ps4, speaking of death stranding WHAT THE FUCK WERE THOSE FIVE UBER GOD BEINGS THAT JUST FLEW OFF INTO THE DISTANCE
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO???
For perspective 80 million is how much Shenmue 1 cost to make, the most expensive game ever made for its time.

im not as concerned for the new GoW as i am for RE7 namely because i don’t recall a lot of big backlash requesting them to change of their style so there is no real reason for them to do so. no the combat didn’t look great, but that didn’t seem to be the focus either and unlike a genre switch you can adjust values and animations to get the feel right.
im happy with the story change though and I would prefer if the kid not die and instead Kratos earns some sort of redemption for all fucked up shit he did in Greece. I don’t like playing as the villian, especially not when the story tries to paint him as a hero and the entire ime you’re getting “your revenge” you’re thinking “dude ALL of this was your fault you deserve everything you got”
wtf is the point of another GOW game seriously, why not a new IP?! what the hell was that narrative, ruthless kratos, now older, wiser and father of a useless kid,WOW!!
