As for being like the gem system, i think that if this is done right, it can add a lot of fun to the game.
Just look at Chaos Breaker and their item system. It doesn’t detract from the game and actually adds more depth to it.

It could be but I’m going by Netherrealm Studios track record when it comes to competitive play which hasn’t been all too impressive. . .
I’m in SRK. this is the place for me to express opinion about how developers make decision which negatively impact sections of the community regardless of whether or not I like their games.
That’s going to be the case though no matter what they do. In this case they’re going with the route that sells the most units.
If the FG Market is going to become a bit crowded again, it makes sense that someone would decide to corner the casual market. Especially since as SRK has proven time and time again (whether right or wrong and that’s somewhat subjective), there’s very little respect for NRS Games as serious FG ventures to begin with.
There’s very little of it because NRS hasn’t been serious about for a while. When they do work hard to make the game more polished like they did with MKX they then take 3 steps back with this stuff.
Besides, one more time:
I don’t come to SRK to care about the people that aren’t remotely close to caring what happens to this community. Casuals can love this shit all they want. If I wanted to get hype about it, I’d be in gamefaqs not here.
Think Soul Calibur IV’s thing, or Smash’s custom characters (the stuff that affects stats, not just the custom moves). Or even SF x TK’s gems (ignoring the pay2win factor). The logistics alone would probably be a nightmare.
If they do something reasonable with it then that’d be nice, but I’m not holding my breath on it being a competitively viable option.
Considering how much time shit like that takes to do and how much they’ll probably tack on so that you get most of that unlocked from the get go, this all looks beyond fucking shitty.
So there you go. Not gonna say I was impressed by the footage shown but the team did seem to improve the game in pretty much every level. I’m not sure if they showed actual gameplay footage (i.e. as in retail version) but considering it looks overall rather close to GTAV level of visuals, I’d say the graphics looked real. So there’s that too
I won’t say that its entirely fair. They got hilariously ambitious with the 3 fighting styles and made it work.
This though, screams of all the added stuff that’s getting thrown at gamers. Its going to be 60 dollars with a 30 dollar season pass to unlock shit. Now fighting games are gonna be on that CoD/Battlefield trip where you spent money at the beginning just to have extra shit so you don’t have to unlock it.
