Just want to give my quick thoughts on Doom 4. I think currently the game looks fine but I couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed from the trailers and I wasn’t quite sure why. After thinking about it for a bit I’ve managed to pin point some of the issues I have from the gameplay they showed that I hope gets ironed out/changed before release.
Granted this is just from judging the gameplay I’ve seen and having not gotten any hands on time with the game take everything I say with a large grain of salt.
General Mobility: The Jumps are good, turning seemed slow but I’m assuming the game was played on a controller so that makes sense, vaulting over terrain is a nice idea but they just need to speed up the animation so it doesn’t break up the flow as much. The main issue I have with mobility is I think the current movement speed feels far too slow, they should either speed it up in general (give a walk button on PC and let thumbstick movement control the speed on consoles) or allow players to sprint omnidirectionally (like Half Life 2 for example) for an infinite amount of time.
Context sensitive actions: Being able to melee execute enemies is awesome in context, however it suffers from a limited selection of animations per enemy (you could see a couple of the same animations used multiple times in the trailer) and some of them go on for too long, breaking up the flow of the game too much. They should be kept in, they’re a good idea they should just make sure there’s a large variation of animations and that they’re all kept short or can be cancelled out of.
The chainsaw being only context kills up close was really disappointing and there were are very limited number of execution animations for it, it should be changed to an extremely powerful melee weapon that attacks like in the old Doom games with the contextual kills only happening when you perform an excecution with the chainsaw selected.
More or less my main issue with the game is right now there are too many things that slow down the game and break up the flow of combat, there’s still a long time until the game launches so if they clean these up or show that these aren’t actually an issue then I will be much more excited for the game, however right now I’m not really that interested in it.
By being substantially worse than all of them? I agree.
Linear corridors filled with identical damage sponge enemies that drop tons of ammo. Built for casuals. Audio/video logs. Said to be “all about speed” which is why it has slow reloads and forces you to pause the game to switch guns.
“Build and share”. Paid mods. Press X to do cinematic takedown that gets old after the first time. They glow blue to signify when you can do a fatality on them just in case the player is retarded.
Are you fucking kidding me? The new Doom signifies everything that is wrong with modern games. Don’t even try to tell me it’s better than COD when it’s the exact same shit.
I wouldn’t mind if this gen becomes a race between Sony, M$ and Nintendo to see who revives more dormant franchises, if the rumors of Shenmu HD/New Shenmue are true.
Probably because they want to give you the chance to go to the exact weapon you want instead of having to cycle. It may be faster for those who can probably remember where it is on the cycle to do it in that manner but it’s probably better for those who don’t want to take the time to remember exactly how many button presses is required to get to any one weapon regardless of which one you are using.
What I said wasn’t applying to PC and strictly for Consoles. Keyboards are always going to be easier because of the numbers…(technically keyboards are supposed to be easier period).
Probably a console option. I can see that since they kinda had that in New Order. Just looks weird with the slow down and selecting weapon. Either way i want some more double barrel shotguns in my life!
