Yeah, that was another thing that kept me a decent distance away from 5.
I main Seong Mi-na and Yun-seong. Xiba is not an acceptable replacement for the former, and there was zero replacement for the latter. I secondaried Xianghua, and Leixia was such a terrible replacement for her, taking most of what was enjoyable and fun about playing Xianghua out of the game.
aside from the awesome jiggle physics, the soul series was pure weapon-based fighting. when they started introducing supers and horrible storylines to the characters, project soul eventually fell off.
ivy as main, astaroth as secondary and ring-outs all day. used to be simple like CH fishing and whiff baiting but nowadays it’s all about having meter and shit to win.
some fans really like the historical fantasy setting and massive cosplay potential of the series but the overall plot of the last few games is pretty rubbish.
I really wish they went a different direction than meter management. In a way, Ivy’s grapples were cinematic supers. going that direction instead of incorporating 2DFG systems would’ve satisfied both pre-IV fans and the tournament spectators.
But the Soul community is happy with the new games, and they’ll whine and bicker and hold a grudge if you disagree, so god bless them and their game.
i guess the soul community doesn’t have much choice if the devs threw them a lemon. the series needs to emphasize and bring back weapon stripping, clashing and repel imo. having no supers or meter for that matter forces players to play more aggressive and smarter with their characters’ moveset.
new ideas to implement into the game are somewhat scarce since the fighting styles are based on real life techniques but fans are still happy they get a new sequel every now and then. fuck, SF is only up to part five right now but each new mechanic or system update they try to implement works on a lot of levels. here’s hoping that project soul can get their shit together next time and come up with awesome stuff.
I’ve never really understood why 3DFG players get all pissy whenever a 3D game introduces more 2D-esque systems like meters and advanced aerial movement.
I’ve given up hope on Shenmue, VirtuaOn, Carmageddon ever happening, but still hoping for PowerStone 3 (but I’d gladly take PowerStone1&2 HD remix) and Panzer Dragoon Saga sequel.
-Hideo Kojima announces development of Area of the Closers set on a colonized Mars with awkward voice acting and featuring mechs based on ancient Egyptian paganism
-Starcraft: Ghost development is restarted
-Streets of Rage reboot; developed by Platinum
-Somebody throws an XBox Duke controller at Harada’s head and he gets acute Tekken amnesia. He forgets everything after Dark Resurrection and announces T5DR2. He also adds 8 Way Run.
-Pokemon MMORPG for WiiU
Looking forward to release dates of all upcoming announced Nintendo stuff for this year, hopefully some Scalebound gameplay, yakuza 5 and persona 5 release dates.
And whatever exclusives Sony and MS are gonna pull out. I believe Nintendo stated they aren’t showing anything new just stuff that’s gonna come out soon.
Also hopefully a Tekken 7 console release date so I can have a reason to run and buy a ps4…and hopefully a slim model of x1 and ps4 announced. Shit.
Also what RagingStorm said, could you imagine a modern Dino Crisis oh mannnnn. That shit would be scary af. Say it has the re4 type camera, but with some tweaks to the game so it isn’t just RE4 with Dinos mannnnn.
Virtual On and Powerstone have chances, but to have hope for PDS sequel is pretty crazy. Team Andromeda has been long gone and the director is at Microsoft Game Studios (Crimson Dragon).
Phil Spencer said that when they do polls or some shit for what sequel that gamers would like to see that Shenmue 3 is always the highest request. He says he acknowledges it but it’s not their IP so they can’t make it happen.
I wish they’d reach out to SEGA. I’m sure MS wouldn’t mind helping with it, they did that to bring Shenmue 2 to the states even though for the most part all they did was pay of the dubbing i guess
Meter management doesn’t really add too much from the game other than to create artificial barriers and limitations. That’s cool and I like it, but I also like having options at my disposal without the use of meter, personally speaking.
The same thing would happen if 3D systems we’re introduced in 2D fighters. Stuff like this would work in a new series, but hard to sell in something already established.
I’d like to see VF4’s defense system in a SF, more than I would SF’s eternal game in VF.
Sony’s Playstation rep was saying the same thing when asked about titles brought to the PS4.
What got Shenmue 2 put on Xbox was SEGA’ U.S. president at the time getting him hired onto MS, instead of sinking with SOA.
Don’t want to shit on dreams, but even if they did, it’d be GDLK and only released in Asia, while the West would get a.sequel to Sonic Runners or something, lol.
yu suzuki needs to start a shenmue kickstarter pronto!
edit:
the soul series actually dropped their original meter system from soul edge [not necessarily a super meter, but still] and it already implemented aerial control when soulcalibur rolled out. it pretty much had those features covered among others that’s why the series has a strong following up until now.
