Video Game General 3.0 - You know what should come back? Pre-rendered backgrounds!

I’m just enjoying the show. Continue dancing for my entertainment.

This is really boggling my mind… If an advanced technique is gated behind a “difficult” set of inputs, that’s perfectly fine. It’s advanced for a reason… Not everyone is supposed to be able to do it. Not without practicing, at least. It’s what separates the people who are willing to put in the work from the ones who aren’t. I’ll never agree with the removal of execution barriers.

In my opinion, a fighting game is best when it forces you to spend time actually learning the fundamentals of the mechanics in battle, and not having to battle the game itself.

I don’t mind executional barriers being lowered tbh. But I wouldn’t consider charge moves to be an execution barrier, aside from SF’s pretzel motions that charge characters sometimes have. They’re there for a reason; Ges is just whining because he doesn’t prefer them.

Yes sir!

Raging Demon input feels satisfing somehow, even when it’s not something you think about when doing anymore it would be a shame to see it go.

And some people find charge inputs easier so taking them all away to try and make the game “more accessible” could be counter productive anyway.

Personally I’m looking forward to fucking around with motion Vega but I can see why people who like him and charge specials would be a bit miffed about this.

I’ll play Vega regardless like I always have. Hope him being motion doesn’t make his normals have shitty range. I loved the way he has played before and hope this change is just a way to get Vega to be a threat like he used to be in CvS2 and SF2.

Charlie gonna be my main though, reminds me of my main Juri. That character is so godlike, I love characters like him that have high mobility, can zone, and rush down. Same reason Juri better be in.

BUT ALEX NEEDS TO BE CONFIRMED ALREADY! FUCK! Capcom playing to much. Alex and Charlie in SF5 needs to happen so I dont have to play Ken again. Not interested in Ken until they change his face. Tired of playing ugly Ken.

The only thing I’d consider as “battling the game” thus far are Brawl’s random tripping and MKX’s input buffering system. Having to learn how to do an input and practicing to be able to do it consistently is not battling the game itself.

Do you need to design the move around Kara cancels, though? If you had a Demon that could start in place or step forward before the grab depending on which button you used, wouldn’t that satisfy the same goal as Kara Cancelling an attack to gain distance for the Demon? Making it a motion doesn’t even prevent you from Kara Cancelling anyway.

You don’t even need to make the motion a double half circle. Cerebella and Kanji have 0-frame super grabs with just one 360 and a double fireball, respectively. “But Gespenst, you fucking retard, they don’t have Akuma’s walkspeed.” And you’re right, they don’t. They’ve got other mobility tools like running and an airdash, but let’s just ignore those for now. I can point to Fukua instead, who also has a 360 super grab, and is significantly faster than the aforementioned two characters. But she requires more resources to use it. There are ways to balance these so-called problems that arise from changing inputs, but you don’t want to think outside the box.

Also answer me this: if one of the reasons for the Demon’s input is tied to walkspeed, then why does Oni need to have it when he doesn’t move much faster than Zangief?

An execution skill ceiling is all well and good and something to strive for in your game, but execution entry barriers serve no design purpose and only prevent people from getting into the real game as fast. At high level play, they don’t matter since everyone’s execution is at a point where it’s second nature, anyway. There’s a reason why actual fighting game designers all agree that making entry-level stuff easier is better for the game. You don’t gain anything by making a Shinkuu Hadoken a pretzel motion or requiring you to manually cancel the landing lag of your jump-in attacks in Street Fighter.

No matter how much we hate EA you have to hand it to them today they really had a strong, well balanced showing at Gamescom.

New Need for Speed looks fast and sleek, I’m not usually a big fan of racers outside of Mario Kart, but the interactive live action multiple story paths and the style customization sounds like a cool twist of the racing genre.

Mirrors Edge: Catalyst was game of the fucking show, it played exactly like how I hoped it would no guns, no heavy emphasis on combat, just quick hit and run game play with open end level design and super clean visuals. My only concern is I hope the game isn’t too easy I’d like the enemy AI to be aggressive and pose an actual threat giving me a sense of urgency, but I love what they’ve shown today.

Sims 4 I skipped this part I have no interest in Sims.

Unravaled is a game I had no interest in at E3, but seeing more of it in motion with the art and animation and physics puzzle based game play I’m pleasantly surprised, I don’t think it will blow my socks off or anything, but it’s definitely a cool relaxing indie game I could see myself playing.

Star Wars The Old Republic: Knights of The Fallen Empire looks like a pretty substantial expansion if I were to buy any subscription based game this would be it, looks like EA learned their lesson and are turning things around with TOR.

PVZ Looks like more of the same, but I like that EA is actually devoting time and resources to a quirky weird franchise like this not sure if ill ever get into it, but I like the fact a game like this is alongside FIFA and NFS.

Star Wars Battlefront looks flashy, Star Warsy, and plain fun I heard Angry Joe and others complaining about how dogshit the dog fighting was at E3, but it looks kinda fun to me especially in third person, I’m really liking the intensity of the combat I hope DICE doesn’t drop the ball on this one because it could be one of the best shooters of the generation if it lives up to the hype. I still don’t like the lack of campaign though we all saw how Titanfall and Evolve turned out.

Fifa isn’t something I care about, I like watching sports, but lost interest playing sports games a long time ago, but the fut draft mode looks like diehard soccer fans will sink their teeth into, it looks like building a team in this mode is like building a deck in a card game which is cool.

It’s not about cancelling the Demon for range. It’s for set-ups. You’re once again ignoring my examples of whiffing st.hk and cancelling into Demon (the st.hk whiffing gets them to block on reaction, so they get hit by the demon), or starting the f.mp overhead and cancelling into demon instead.

Perhaps “Kara” cancel isn’t the correct term but it’s the one I see thrown around the most in regards to cancelling normals into Raging Demon.

You can make it a motion, but I’ve already gone over the reasons why it’s NOT a motion, you’re just ignoring those.

And Skullgirls is a completely different game with a different set of mechanics and a different sense of balancing things.

But that also brings up something else. Why do you even have to change the motion in the first place? The raging demon input isn’t even difficult, and just having it as its input already helps to balance it out as it is, and it’s still faster than the normal input you’d give a super (e.g double quarter-circle or double half-circle). Heck, my friends who aren’t into fighting games thinks that the raging demon input is EASIER than traditional super inputs.

You just want it changed because you don’t like it, not because it’s problematic. I’m not “thinking outside the box” because there’s no need to change what’s already fine.

That one I think is more for tradition’s sake. Since Oni is basically super-saiyan Akuma.

No matter what it is, somebody is going to consider it too difficult. I have friends who can’t do Ryu’s simple motions. Should we change SF’s inputs to match Smash’s so these people have an easier time getting into the game? No.

These games are easy enough as is. Nothing needs to be changed just to accommodate those who don’t want to work for anything.

karas make the input easier.
even easier than the motion which is what you want.
you can make that 5 input move with 3 simple quick inputs with a kara with the method i mentioned.

hold forward plus button which makes for good kara, presson button plus lp at the same time twice while still holding forward.
then shift to the down forward position and press lk and hp at the same time.

EASIER!

Oh my lord I made it to Tiamet on La Mulana after being stuck for 6 months.

And she is kicking my ass.

I don’t mind execution barriers much, myself, when they’re warranted. It really depends on how it affects the general play. There is such a thing as too much execution prerequisites (see Melee and L-Cancelling), but oversimplifying inputs can backfire really easily, especially when you’re talking about strategy-modifying input requirements. These aren’t execution barriers, so much as alternative inputs, and they’re largely built around the move. I do agree that some inputs are way too complicated (see ST Guile/Vega for examples of shit I think needs to bow out… honestly, I think 720 is easier than HCBx2 or the seesaw motions, but I digress), but overall, even charge moves are simple enough to not cause much of a barrier at all. If anything, the only thing one could argue is some sort of charge indicator, as the hard thing about charge moves isn’t their input so much as memorizing the frame count to know your charge is ready. I find myself overcharging just to be sure it comes out, but then again, I don’t play charge characters often so I don’t really have the feel for it. If not in the actual game but in training mode would show off some visual queue that it’s ready so people can learn the timing (which DOES vary game to game), I think that’d be adequate. Not required, by any means, though.

Come on, Raging Demon isn’t difficult. Just hold LK. Fool-proof. Play some KOF. I can’t combo to save my life, but the only commands I can’t pull off consistently are 360s and 720s.

Did this dumb ass really just try to summon Mr Wizard to GD.

Goodbye flags and tags…

Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is looking hype. No guns, more free running even when in enclosed spaces, and a while slew of new moves and interactable environment pieces. Well worth the wait.

For anyone who didn’t see the Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst Gamescom demo, this is fucking beautiful already GOTY 2016 lol
