I liked the N64 well enough but I do notice that when people list the best games on the system they always list the same 10 games or so and that’s it. And they are great games, but let’s be real here. The N64s library was severely lacking compared to both its predecessor the SNES and its competition the PS1. I can’t imagine having missed out on the PS1’s library back then and only having the N64.
N64’s library was more limited, but the good games it did have were amazing. And for me, that was enough.
I mean, it gave me Majora’s Mask, the greatest game of all time.
That said, this is why the Gamecube is my favorite system. Larger library of good games and all of the good games were still fantastic. And it was still getting decent third party support.
Though the Wii U may be my new favorite Nintendo console by the end of its lifespan. Xenoblade Chronicles X and Zelda U I’m sure will push it there for me, if it’s not there already.
I really liked the GC too actually. Probably the last time I really cared about Nintendo. I’ll probably buy a Wii U for the new Zelda and Bayonetta 2 though.
There are some classics I’m not seeing on people’s n64 list. Things like blast corps, body harvest, ogre battle, banjo, the controls were ass but the castlevania games had atmosphere.
N64 was actually the first console I ever sold. I got it at launch, and about 8 months later I realized the only thing I was actually playing on it was Mario 64. So I jumped ship and got a psx just in time for its heyday.
Everybody I knew had an N64 though so I didn’t really miss out on anything fun when the games finally started to roll out.
Still beats Gamecube and Wii handily though.
cheh,
Yeah the N64 was an embarrasing turd of a system, imo…considering how great the previous Nintendo systems were. N64 had, in my opinion of course… THE worst controller I’ve ever seen and tried to play with. Fortunately for me, my roommate at the time had that system, so I never had to spend any money to experience what little it had to offer me. The only thing of note for me there was Goldeneye…then I am sure that Super Mario Kart 64 might’ve appealed to me since I enjoyed the SNES one… and I probably would’ve enjoyed SSB since I later enjoyed the hell out of Melee on Gamecube…and Perfect Dark which appeared to be the new and improved “non-Bond Goldeneye”, really.
As we all know, Playstation was already out at the time and kicking everyone’s ass with 1 quality game after another, all day long for several years, man. (*and this was on top of that little bonus “custom soundtrack” feature you could use with certain games…this is on top of it having a superior controller…and a cheaper cd format for games if I recall) It was awesome from day 1 back in 1995, actually. And…it just kept getting better each year.
It would be interesting to see the results of an alternate timeline where Nintendo and Sony didn’t go their separate ways…someone online released a rare picture of the Nintendo/Sony system prototype a few weeks ago.
There are entire genres of games missing on the n64. Listing a bunch of games I honestly have no interest in. Smash gets boring, Mario and Zelda get boring, I hate pokemon, Wrestlemania games are actually fun, but i can get those on other systems. If your a striaight nintendo fan only I can see how you can live with an n64, but the games just aren’t there for me to have a good time. I can last on an SNES, because there are so many good games, including multiplayer games. But N64 has like goldeneye (did not age well) and thats it.
Dreamcast has the capcom fighters. Easily can last on those. It has the KOFs too, and Garou. Also has games like JSR, SKies of Arcadia, Grandia 2, Sonic adventure sonic levels only, Sonic adventure 2 sonic and shadow levels only. PS2 has literally everything. SNES has fighters as well as rpgs, and fighting game. You go from the SNES and think wow nintendo can’t lose. They have all the games. Then n64 comes out and doesn’t have shit at all. Dreamcast at launch > n64. The lack of games on that system was astounding.
Why are you comparing systems from 2 different generations (n64+DC). Also the wrestling games on n64 were AKI developed and superior to the other wrestling options at the time.
Also forgot about jet force Gemini, turok 2 and 3 multiplayer with the greatness of the cerebral bore.
N64 had no rpgs I just remember that quest game and that was it. Also no fighting games or games with lost of cinematics and audio the cartridge memory was very limited, Nintendo fucked up on that they thought they could prevent piracy by releasing yet another cartridge console but I didn’t see that affecting sony which ps1 games were heavily pirated.
They had some of the best games ever created though with zelda ocarina of time and super Mario 64, rare still on its prime too bad the hardware was so limited in comparison with the competition.
Why not? We aren’t talking hardware specs, just quality of the game library.
The n64 had only nintendo games basically. The only rpg worth while was paper mario. Look at each console winner, had the best rpgs. Last gen was the exception but if it had another year, ps3 would win out.
N64 and gcn had a lot of great games with metroid prime, LoZ, mario 64, smash bros, etc. But if you noticed i only said nintendo games. If you had those kind of games of course you had a blast.
ogre battle 64
Oh, it’s “shit on Nintendo for not giving me the same shit that’s on all the other consoles” time again…
See ya later.
this is why consoles can be overrated, despite still being awesome (SNES an example). People who like rpgs tend to say this, but the genre is the last thing to ever judge a console’s greatness on.
Some people might have been satisfied with the N64 but you know who probably wasn’t? Nintendo.
When I was unemployed, I had to sell my 3DS XL for gas money. 7 months into this new job and just got a raise, I think it’s time to re-buy one again. You guys dont understand how much never getting to finish the first Ace Attorney and Edgeworth Investigations has bothered me lol. I was playing them both at the same time. Investigations was on the last case, and I only got to finish the intro trial for the first game.
Think I’ll just save money and get the 3DS trilogy off the e-shop.
FUCK YOU BITCH ASS, NINTENDO-HATING NIGGAS.
Go shill for Sony forcing you to pay $50 a year for fucking P2P online multiplayer, while giving you the greatness that is the likes of God of War: Ascension as a free game “reward” every month. Or the next ArcSys scam that they’re gonna try again in six months.
Fuck off… I’m tired of you two hoe ass niggas.
No. I will not.
I’m sick of their shit. Always flagging every post I make, like a couple of little girls.
You got a problem with me, speak on it, bitch niggas.
