Bubsy?! Cool.

Went to see the ‘Anthrocon Inaugural Furry Parade’ this afternoon… my thoughts: furries are weird, furries are not so smart (they are out here sweating their balls off in the July heat, come back in March or something, goofballs) and of course I saw someone I knew from Ohio.

> Bryan Fury

> Diddy Kong

…just what are you trying to say?

I like Roxas. I always thought it would have been cool to update the Drive system for KHIII by dropping the different forms and letting you Drive into Roxas, he could have his own stats and abilities. Like a second playable character.

  1. Megaman
  2. Link (TP/MM Incarnate)
  3. Garcian Smith
  4. Lei Kuugo
  5. Cecil/Rydia/Sabin/Terra/Cloud/FF7 Cid

There are probably 10-15 characters that could take top 5 spots at any given time for me, so it’s kinda hard to pick. (Except for #1, where Kefka sits comfortably. :P)

Kefka (FF6)
Guybrush Threepwood (Monkey Island series)
Isaac Clarke (Dead Space 1,2)
Bowser ([Paper] Mario)
Arthas Menethil (WC3/TFT)

Just realized where Issac Clarke’s name came from. Pretty good stuff there.

Dante
Jetstream Sam Rodrigues
Zero (Drakengard 3)
Gwendolyn (Odin Sphere)
Yukiko

Trying to think of favorite characters based only on their personality is pretty difficult outside of RPGs, surprisingly. Much easier if you just consider their designs alone

What is the criteria you guys use to evaluate what your favorite game characters are? Does the quality of the games a character was in matter the most? or is it personality? Contribution to the plot? What makes character X more deserving to be on your list than character Y?

O.Sagat (ST)
Jiro Musashi (Shinobi 2011)
Sonic (Sonic 2)
Isaac Clarke (Dead Space 1-3)
Reapers (Mass Effect 1-2)

Quick list for the moment may change later and when I do I’ll put up my reasoning.

I have to ask why specifically is the MM version of Link the one you crown your favorite.

Here’s mine.

[details=Spoiler]Kyle Hyde (Hotel Dusk: Room 215)

I received this game on a whim, and ended up enjoying the fact that it was one of the few games I’d owned at the time that had characters that felt flawed. I still have to pick up the game’s sequel to finish his story, and I urge anyone (well, anyone who enjoys visual novel/point and click games) to pick up the game.

Soma Cruz (Castlevania: Aria/Dawn of Sorrow)

This dude was a really accessible, relatable guy. Just a normal dude who gets pushed into an extraordinary situation and has to adapt. I have a thing for playing everymen.

Ryu

This is one of the pillars of my youth, a gateway to my favorite hobby, and still one of the best fighting game characters out there IMO.

Juan (Guacamelee!)

I normally don’t care for silent protagonists, especially when they have folks talking to them (which is why you don’t see Gordon Freeman here). But the cutscenes gave Juan enough backstory for me to care about. He’s a simple man with a simple goal.

Faith (Mirror’s Edge)

I liked this character because she wasn’t silent per se, but she talked enough for me to sort of fill in the blanks of what she would say. Along with the fact that she is willing to go so far for a family member, risking life and liberty for her estranged sibling, I enjoyed playing as her.[/details]

I just like him the most. Pretty much every character on my list I just…like. Don’t have a specific reason why, I just do.

Going to keep my top 5 to one character per game, or else some of them will hog up all the spots.

1. Lee Everett (The Walking Dead) – Perhaps it’s unfair to include him here since his personality is shaped and molded by the player, but fuck it, it’s my list. In my playthrough of The Walking Dead, Lee was an outstanding human being. He was the core of the group, always trying to do his best to keep the survivors from turning on each other. The amount of care he gave to Clementine was genuine and heartwarming, in part because Clementine herself was an excellent character who could have easily made this list if I wasn’t sticking to one per game. Lee would always try his hardest to make sure everyone in his group came out alive, even if those lives included a bigoted asshole and a walking liability whose carelessness had gotten several others in the group killed. Because in the end, it’s all about human survival. This doesn’t mean Lee was a saintly goody-two-shoes, either. There were some harsh decisions to be made, where the right choice wasn’t always clear or easy. He even broke his “try to save everyone” rule once in a fit of revenge. But that’s what makes him an interesting an multifaceted character. Nobody’s perfect, especially when you have to survive the apocalypse.

2. Yoshiya “Joshua” Kiryu (The World Ends With You) – I actually really hated this guy when he first showed up. He replaced a good friend in my party, acted like a smarmy asshole, and couldn’t pull his weight both in-story and in-gameplay. Then you start to learn more about who he really is, he starts showing his true capabilities, and over time, his devil-may-care attitude becomes more and more endearing and funny. Towards the end of his run, he became my favorite top-screen partner gameplay-wise, and an indispensable member for the post-game. Certain story revelations give his early-game impressions some context. Joshua’s an excellent example about how some great characterization and game design can create someone who’s godlike.

3. GLaDOS (Portal) – It’s GLaDOS. What else really needs to be said? If you do need more things said, you should just do the world a favor and sacrifice your body for science right now.

4. Yu Narukami (Persona 4)The crowning example of how to bring a silent protagonist to life. He’s got that perfect mix of stoicism and quirkiness that makes even mundane actions from him highly-entertaining to watch. He’s also a great example of how to write an “ace” character; while he can do pretty much everything well and often better than everyone else, he doesn’t give off a Marty Stu vibe. I can’t quite put my finger on it as to why, but it’s still a testament to his characterization that he avoided it. Bonus points to just being really damn stylish and having the coolest-looking Initial Persona in the franchise. Or at least he did, before Arsène showed up. Narukami’s actually going to have to watch his back, because if everything goes how I think it is, the P5 protag is going to steal his spot in this list in November.

5. Missile (Ghost Trick) – While he gives the appearance of your typical simpleton dog, Missile subverts your expectations by showing an incredible amount of intelligence, ingenuity, and badassery, all under a determinator skin. Missile’s actions save Sissel’s (and pretty much everyone else’s) ass again and again; absolutely nothing can stop him. Of course, that description doesn’t really do the character justice, but if I were to elaborate even a little further, it would spoil over half of Ghost Trick. So you’ll just have to take my word for it that he’s amazing.

@orochizoolander

Megaman is a childhood icon for me. Plus the end of Megaman 7 is a personal favorite scene of mine.

Link is also a childhood icon. I feel like the versions I listed had the most character out of all the other Links.

Garcian Smith is my favorite black character in gaming. Plus Killer7 is a damn good game that shows people like Po that A GOOD STORY DOES MAKE A GOOD GAME.

Lei Kuugo is my fav character from one of my favorite games. I like the story-line she is from and I like her character. Pllllus she’s the only Protag girl in the game.

I really can’t pick between these FF characters.

ah, and I forgot about Dimitri from Darkstalkers, along with Victor, L. Raptor, John Tailbain and Pyron…fighting games could really be a whole other category of “favorite characters of all time” for me…

Criteria for me is really the visual design and concept first…mostly due to the old “art major” side of me there… then it comes down to how the character plays, what he/she/it is capable of, and how much I enjoy that character being my avatar in that game’s world. Dimitri from Darkstalkers was the immediate stand-out to me when I first saw that game back in the day, since I’ve always been fascinated with vampire lore, and I liked the way the character was designed…along with the fact that a company finally made a game featuring all these “mythic creatures of the night” in the first place…which reminds me… it’s truly a shame that we will most likely never see another Darkstalkers game again.

Anyway, powers/abilities play a big role as well-- like you have Vergil looking incredibly badass in literally every damn thing he does during the heat of battle…everything. Any time a character has all kinds of cool moves and interesting abilities…kicking ass in style…it’s automatic bonus points every time.

This is also reminding me of why I tend to not like First-Person shooters that much compared to 3rd person… I prefer to see my characters in action whenever cool/badass stuff is happening.

Bolded = NOPE.

Killer 7 is still cool but stories don’t make good games, they just add to the overall package as long as the rest is good.

I want to switch Sam Gideon for Terry Bogard on my list…so I am.

Character List : Final Showdown

Jacky Bryant
Lion Rafael
Terry Bogard
Sam Gideon
Strider

Ain’t arguing this.
