I’ve recently got into SF: 3S but it’s been hard for me to learn the basics because of my lack of searching skills. can somebody be nice enough to tell me the very basic and essential skills i need to be a good urien player? also, can somebody give me a link to teach me proper Street Fighter notation?
If you want to learn the basics of Urien, go to gamefaqs.com. They have many character specific faqs. Check out the one made by SlimX, it’s pretty good. If you want to gain a better understanding on how Urien should be used, try youtube.
Good luck.
Thanks a lot for the Urien strat guide. I never really used gamefaqs for fighting game strats before (since there’s always new and better strats that appear out of fighting games) but the one you recommended helped me quite a bit
regarding the youtubing however, i watch a lot of messatsu vids there but i have trouble actually understanding what he’s doing… i dont know where to begin learning about Urien though. for example, what good strategy or skill should i focus more on? is charge partitioning an essential part of using Urien? and i still have trouble understanding the importance of the Aegis Reflector
sorry for all the n00b questions btw
Urien Ftw
One of the biggest noob mistakes is trying to learn charge partitioning/buffereing, and not understanding it. They usually get pissed off and just give up and switch to Ken or something. Urien is a very tough character to master, but in the right hands hes a god. (Another player to watch is RX).
Watching youtube videos isn’t good for learning the very basic Urien play, these top players are using all the tricks they can to get an edge over their opponent. Things like crazy unblockables with really strict timing, and a very deep understanding of the game.
Charge partitining is not as essential part of using Urien, but it helps alot. (I honestly dont partition that much, I only use it in setups).
One great tip that most people say to new players is to start with Tyrant Slaughter (sp?) which is SA1. Its alot simpler to use, and you can focus on learning the basics, and theres lots of meter so you can EX all day long.
The importance of the Aegis is that it controls space on the screen. Whenever an Aegis is out, it is constantly pressuring the opponent. In the corner after a knock down, you can throw an Aegis on them and they have nothing to do except parry or block it (only smart thing). During this time, you can do an overhead or low attack, mix it up. If they get hit, you can c.fierce them and start juggling. Thats one of the main reasons why its so good. The aegis itself does not do damage, it enhances Uriens damage and potential. It creates situations that the opponent basically has to guess what to do. Use these to your damage and almost force damage on people every time.
Another use for the Aegis is the super freeze itself. The freeze is about 2 seconds long, meaning you can do a tackle, and cancel it with the aegis, during the freeze you can charge for another tackle. Once you get the charge of buffereing you can start doing many multiple tackles in your juggles.
Something that allways helps is a good use of normals and throws. Urien’s normals are decent. Standing Strong is great for meter building and counter pokes, standing fierce stuffs alot of things. Standing forward also has good range useful in some situations.
To sum it up, start with learning SA1, unless you really love the Aegis (like I did), but be ready for alot of practice and fustration. Learn the normals, throws, and basic punish combos. Once you understand these, watch those videos, as they will teach you new ideas.
I probably missed alot, spelling errors, etc, I’m at school. Hope this helpes. I’ve played Urien for about 3 months, and thats what I have learned.
Forgot to mention: Lots of the Aegis setups and unblockables do NOT work on the computer. And the computer is pretty gay against Urien. The computer can block unblockables, but its also stupid enough just to walk into the aegis. You can throw out an aegis on their wake up with proper timing, so they ‘wake up’ into it and you just c.fierce and juggle them. I’m hoping that you are playing Urien against players, because the computer just sucks. (Hopefully on an old type too ^^).
If you’re new to 3S in general and want to learn Urien, here’s a break down of basically how you would want to progress with him.
[ 1 ] Pokes - Learn what normals are good to pressure with and learn your distances. Learning to use your normals is probably the most important thing to using Urien as a lot of his moves leave him wide open to retaliation on parry and even on block against certain characters.
[ 2 ] Throw - Learn to throw, LP+LK is your friend. Beware of getting baited by other players and learn when to throw will be your best friend.
[ 3 ] Combos/Buffering - Learning to cancel into supers and off other moves as well as doing multiple tackles so that you can try to get the most out of your chances to do damage. Your basic stuff is to learn where you can do certain things.
ex. opponent is not near the corner (i.e. midscreen):
c.HP (2 hits), LK/MK Tackle … depending on your Super Art of choice (SA3 is what you will ultimately want to learn), you can do other things like canceling into supers if available or if you’re close, but not quite in the corner yet, EX Tackle to continue your combo.
[ 4 ] Bad Habits - Don’t rely on your specials as pokes. Random Tackles might work if you have a sense for it and your opponent can’t predict you, but most of the time, that might not be the case. If you can’t take advantage of it once or twice, don’t keep doing it. Urien’s moves are very powerful in the right situations, but try not to abuse them outside of combos. Only exception would probably be abusing the headbutt after getting knocked down or knocked out of the air. Basically keep in mind what the opponent is doing is see what you can or can’t get away with. If you’re constantly getting punished because of 1 move you’re doing, you have to realize this and stop doing it.
[ 5 ] Super Art Usage - Learn to use Aegis. SA3. Tackle with HCF+K to buffer into SA3 if you’re lazy.
[ 6 ] Partitioning/Unblockables - Learn everything else first, this last. It’s quite difficult to master this last one, but ultimately if you have bad basics, you probably won’t even be able to find a chance to use any of these.

once again, thank you guys for all the help! my urien has improved however there still are many problems that i have playing with him.
- i tend to abuse the chariot rush quite a lot and out of nowhere
- i cant seem to set up a c.hp
- i cant get my opponent to the corner and to keep them there
- i still dont know how to use the Aegis Reflector properly
(im basing this on playing against the CPU btw. i dont get much chance to play vs. other people)
sry if i sound like an uber n00b or like im demanding answers from you…
it’s just hard for me to make a transition from T5 to SF:3S

That’s a mental thing. I do it too once in awhile, but really it’s when you feel scared that you do this. Learn to do late j.RH so that the RH hits right before you land. Dash In throws are better, but CPU tends to just super jab you out of dash ins.
-
Parry -> c.HP is the most reliable method or on recovery of something like an uppercut.

Keeping your opponent in the corner requires learning your normals and Aegis as well. If you get them into the corner, knocked down or not, just toss the reflector on top of them and beat on them. Though this tactic is useless to practise with against CPU since the computer is retarded and you can just Aegis on top of them, back dash and sit there so they get hit… then dash back in and c.HP them into an air juggle. You can practise always throwing it out anyways, good practise.

Aegis will come with practise, each aegis distance has a use and it depends on where you are on the screen. Your usage of the SA will get better with more experience so don’t worry if it still feels awkward now.
