All I see is about 40 MSPaints of flyclops, a couple of clips from various X-Men comics, one clip of TF2, and one ad for the archive site’s store. Unless the etology or adengage ads which I have blocked have porn in ‘em by chance… I’m not seein’ it.

It’s like Wikipedia. Can you sue Wikipedia for posting false info on you, or for refusing to take down your bio? I don’t think U.S. law allows for it.

I envision a scenario where I become a well-known screenwriter (here’s hoping) and, in an interview or lecture or something, I talk about the follies of anime storytelling and why it’s monstrously overrated, and I find my websites and emails attacked by a group of people who don’t like that I talked trash about what they like while hiding their attacks behind the “free speech” defense. Silly? Maybe. Paranoid? Definitely. Plausible? Probably.

They hacked the email addresses of the entire Palin family at one point, iirc.

Shutting the site down would be incredibly silly and pointless, though. It’s not 4chan that’s the problem, but Anonymous, which trying to shut THEM down, quite frankly, is akin to trying to shut down the mafia. You’re fucking crazy to think you can. You shut down 4chan, they’ll just go somewhere else. That’s even if you can manage to shut it down in the first place.

It doesn’t matter. SRK doesn’t allow NSFW material. Adblocker or not. 4chan links have always been a big nono. We have kids and people at work.

While 4chan can be cool and funny at times, it is all canceled out by all of the random posts of gay porn, kiddy porn, and pictures of dead people / weird deaths.

I used to go to 4chan once in a blue moon when i was bored, but there was just too much random weird stuff

Everyone here seems to be making the mistake of believing that 4chan and /b/ are the same things.

/b/ is just one of the boards on 4ch and is the most populated one. It’s titled “Random” and it’s where most of the crazy stuff happens. It’s also the birthplace of 99% of the internet’s memes. 4chan also has many other boards with a wide variety of topics like music, videogames, philosophy, science etc. I’ve been on /b/ and 4ch for about 3 and a half years now. This same exact problem happened with AT&T last year. No big deal ready, both companies called the block off within a couple of days at most.

That being said, moot (admin/founder) released an official statement on the blockage today:

Last week we were hit with a small SYN flood?a common type of denial of service attack. The attack was directed at boards.4chan.org, the subdomain that hosts most of the site. Since the attacker used spoofed IP addresses, our server attempted to complete a handshake with clients that had not initiated a connection. These packets would have been seamlessly discarded by the client. At some point, a Verizon Wireless customer or employee noticed these seemingly random inbound packets, and escalated the issue.

The appropriate response would have been to contact our NOC. Instead, somebody decided to block traffic originating from our server without any notification. This mirrors the same inappropriate, heavy-handed response that AT&T made in a similar situation last year. The miniscule amount of traffic coming from our server posed absolutely no threat to their customers or the integrity of their network.

We’ve had this happen twice now in the past year. The trend is particularly disturbing since it shows that an attacker can have large ISPs blackhole you by simply directing a few spoofed SYN packets at your server.

To summarize:
* At no point did 4chan "attack" Verizon's network.
* There was no real threat to Verizon's network.
* Verizon did in fact, block access to 4chan (boards.4chan.org contains 99% of our content).
In closing, I leave you with an illuminating quote from a senior sysadmin at our datacenter:
The only "solution" that they would have you do is:

1. Don't get DDoSed (Yeah right).
2. Turn off your site when you're DDoSed.

Kids hear silly stories about 4chan being some “internet hate machine”.
People go straight to /b/, purposely acting like twats.
/b/ kiddies, after ruining that board, go to all o the others.

It’s kinda like punk concerts in the 70s/80s. Nobody used to cause trouble at shows, but when the press made up stories of depravity in the underground, people started to go to shows just to cause trouble.

It’s not the GNAA. It’s not Hamas. It’s just an imageboard, where people get together to talk about stuff.

Calling 4chan a criminal haven after a few bad incidents would be like calling SRK the “Rapist Headquarters of the World” when Million finally gets arrested.
