Surely Ryu could’ve Dragon punched this (EX or normal version)?
There are some arguments on that post that I’d like to address.
nope, vega will land in time to block the reversal dp. but if ryu doesn’t dp, then vega’s j.mp will hit and ryu must block it. hence it is a safe jump. there is 0% risk in using it as far as i know, and it’s probably one of the easiest-to-perform safe jumps you’ll ever find in this game
but if you tried this in the corner, it probably wouldn’t work i think. the spacing wouldn’t be the same
Cheers Tatsu, I can’t wait to try this when I get home tonight…some randomers are going to suffer!!
did you try it out on zangiefs tatsu?i’m having fantastic results!the giant hag can do nothing about it.
i have not tried it yet but being able to jump in on gief really is a nice plus!
mm while we’re on the subject of gief it seems that a lot of vega players like to do the jumpback fierce overhead on zangief and sagat. but it turns out that both characters can punish him for this. not sure if this was ever mentioned but here is a video demonstrating this:

k so zangief can basically do jab/strong/ex greenhand to punish jump back fierce (on hit) which really sucks for vega!
balrog can do super/ultra to punish. he can also use jab dash punch, but i think it is distance specific.
sagat does super to punish in the video, but i happen to know for a fact that he can also punish with standing roundhouse
this is dangerous information. originally i wasn’t going to mention it for the sake of protecting our endangered species but after some deep thought, i feel that maybe it’s time we should cut the crap and start playing every matchup by the book. i’m tired of this win-by-gimmicks shit. i mean, if i play someone and beat them, i want it to be because i outplayed them fundamentally. not because they didn’t know how to deal with my character that no one uses
i’m sure other characters are able to punish vega’s overhead on hit as well. maybe we should compile a list?
to start it off, this is what i know so far. in a vega mirror match, the ways to punish vega’s overhead (on hit) are:
a) standing roundhouse (distance specific)
b) standing forward (most consistent punish, distance does not matter, does same damage as roundhouse)
c) standing fierce (distance specific, claw specific?)
d) EX scarlet terror (distance specific)
e) EX walldive (distance specific)
slide might work too but i am not sure. i did it one time on rugalitarian during our matches but maybe he just wasn’t blocking
wow wow wow!
ya, I dunno. My consistency rate on jabs just isn’t good enough at this point in time. Same with standing shorts. and yeah it’s true i enter “jab timing mode”. I have to start training myself to hit confirm into strong ex fba faster so that i link less jabs.
Also Tatsu, I noticed in that vid that kara f+ lk + TU for sagat doesn’t work but it probably would with f+ HK kara. Abel can punish a blocked jump out fierce with COD, FADC, ultra or falling sky.
It’s funny you mention this because i’ve always known that gief can punish it since the first month the game was out. But i never posted about it for the same reason. I wanted to protect our people.
Wow. Now that I know Vega has an easy as hell safe jump, I’m going to be going for backthrows ALOT more often. I think this may help me considerably against Ryu and Ken, probably my two most frustrating matchups aside from Blanka. Thanks a lot for this info Tatsu, seriously.
Lol, so the jump-back fierce gimmick is going to die now? Prophet!.
>_>
I stopped using jump back Fierce on many characters , mainly Sagat after i got hit by f. RH x 2 > ultra >____>
Honda can punish it with Ultra , Ryu can super , Blanka can roll , Cammy can ultra , Rog can dash punch , Abel can wheelkick / CoD , Seth can ultra
I havent tested this one yet but i think Gen can super / Ultra , and Viper could probably sjc BK
My condolences to your rear in that Sagat match, ma’am.
argh… safe jump on all characters is too ****ing good. everyone shold show as much love as possible for Tatsu. this really is a great tool. Kara back throw… in the house!!
Hey guys, long time lurker first time posting here. I’ve learned a ton of great stuff from fellow Vegas here, and thought I should start trying to contribute back.
Thanks for posting Tatsu! I was testing out the back throw safe jump on Ryu and it works beautifully, but I noticed a couple options Ryu has if he is aware of what you are doing. I was hoping someone else could try it out to confirm that I’m actually timing the safe jump properly.
When I tested it, Ryu could beat the jump-in with a wake up Ultra. Obviously most Ryus aren’t going to do a wake up ultra, but it’s an option if they are familiar with your tactics or this setup (the safe jump beats his super). Also, my jump mp wouldn’t connect if Ryu just stayed crouching on wakeup. Again, most players aren’t going to stay crouched when you jump in on them, but this could be a problem if you option select the slide. Since the mp whiffs, the slide will come out pointblank into a blocking Ryu which equals pain for you
Anyway it would be cool if someone could try those scenarios too, because maybe I’m not timing the mp perfectly, but it worked great for all his srk’s and other options.
Oh yeah, I also had some success setting this up from an Izuna drop. After landing, immediately take a small step back, then jump in with mp the same way. The timing and spacing is strict though so it seemed inconsistent for me, especially when there are other things you could be setting up after an Izuna.
not just your back throw,it works even better after a hk scarlett terror.immediately after landing your st,do a backdash followed by your mp safe jump.thanks to the backdash, your timing can never go wrong.
thanks for testing deuy! very good info. i can’t seem to get j.mp to land on a wakeup crouching ryu either. it seems like if ryu decides to wake up with low forward, there’s not much that we can do about it.
btw i did some testing and gief can actually against EX spd the safe jump that’s not to say that you should never use it on him, but definitely never use it when he has meter. jumping in on gief after a backthrow basically gives him a free EX spd regardless of what you decide to do upon landing. you can land and do KKK/PPP but there is no point since you can’t punish in any way. and jumping/backdashing aren’t possible due to factors like startup and landing recovery i guess.
maybe it was too good to be true. just another gimmick in the end? :’( then again i’m sure it’ll still have its uses… as long as sagat can’t do anything about it lolol
incase you guys didnt know this but if you get the timing down, izuna looping does wonders on a gief.but the trick is to make sure that you can get the timing down to izuna drop a gief that does a wake up lariat.i honestly cannot explain this by words, but let me say that you got to grab him from top of his head just as he starts the lariat.so set the cpu to do lariats, and practice doing the izunas over and over.just know that gief’s lariat is the only option that has a chance to beat you out of the vortex, and that too depends on vega player’s execution to slip up a little or for the screen to stretch(in which case you got no other option but to whiff the dive).
On the topic of safe-jumping, in this video:

At , after doing Cosmic Heel into Scarlet Terror, Vega immediately dashes back, jumps in does a MP (And it stuffs whatever Sagat was trying to do. Wasn’t TU). He does the same thing at 1:07 (Sagat just blocks, and the MP whiffs).
At , he does it once more, Sagat did a TU (Reversal) and Vega’s MP whiffed. The Sagat was smart and Focus Canceled out of his TU, but you know what would have happened if he didn’t.
Another safe-jump was at . After Vega does an EX FBA into Izuna, he does a Cr MP (For timing), followed by a jump into HK. It hits. He does it again, and Sagat blocks. If Sagat did a TU, it would whiff (I tested this. Oh, and when you jump in, even if you HK, MP or HP - They all whiff if Sagat TU)
Ever since Tatsu brought up Safe Jumping, I’ve been trying to spot possible Safe Jumps. I hope this info helps.
