hopefully they improve him in ssf4

Late reply from me. I’m not talking about crouching forward -> crouching strong working on everybody, man. I mean if crouching strong doesn’t work then you can trade it for crouching jab and it will hit. It’s like crouching forward -> crouching strong -> EX FBA not working on shotos, but change it to crouching forward->crouching jab-> EX FBA and it works.

That switch idea works on every character, crouching or standing, except for crouching Rufus, crouching Chun, crouching Vega and crouching Cammy. I was actually happy to see it whiff on Vega. It inspired me to go check out crouching as an option to avoid certain character specific tricks, like crouching under Sagat’s TK.

and crouching Sakura.

Ah~that combo.
Yeah, I use it all the time. But because it whiffs on crouching opponents and doesn’t get me enough hits to let me hitconfirm into a kara throw it’s not the best option for me. Really, for me the best link is cr.lp, cr.lk. But it’s often too tough to do on a jumpin.

Crouching forward -> crouching jab -> ex FBA actually hits crouching Sakura, unless I screwed up during my testing.

I hear you though, man. I’m also into using crouching jab -> something after a jump-in due to the number of options it presents. Actually becomes a struggle sometimes to remember to mix it up with crouching forward. Just trying to list all the options Vega has for maximum damage output in his match-ups.

Here’s a question that has been on my mind lately:

How do you start an offense on Guile?

Walk to him. It’s not as bad as it seems. Block those booms, fucus those boom follow-ups if they come. From there, early jHP will beat flashkicks, or karathrow works like a charm.

Remember, if he’s walking forward, he can’t sonic boom you. And if he’s not crouching, he can’t flash kick you.

Nothing new, hes still the worst character in the game. Back to akuma i go!

To start offense on Guile you need to be very meticulous. Just like Dhalsim, blindly approaching and trying to cheese-Barcelona your way in is an easy way of getting owned.

Bide your time by jumping over Sonic Booms whilst not jumping into c. fierce, flash kick, and the like. Neutral jump jab helps you get over Sonic Booms. Make your forward advance, and edge Guile into the corner. Guile is the kind of character who excels against aggressive (excessively, that is) foes, so you really have to be patient. A good method of getting in on Guile is once you get into melee range, force him to move around so he can’t continually hold sonic boom charges (c. mk, st. lk. Make sure you don’t commit to large moves like fierce, st. forward, rh’s). Force him to whiff pokes or something, and jump in to press the advantage so he can’t anti-air you. Once in, he struggles greatly, so make sure you bait Flash Kicks by using KKK flip on his wake up (this works so well; with meter stocked, Guile throws out the FK and tries to FADC, but not if it whiffs entirely).

It’s hard for me to describe. Basically, you shouldn’t focus on “getting in” against Guile so much as “controlling the arena”. If you dodge the SB’s, and whisk in and out of Guile’s own range, he will struggle big time. For one thing, Guile has a hell of a hard time catching a run away Vega. I like to play FBA mix up games with Guile since they’re prone to air throw, and like many others, Guile suffers big time against the Izuna Vortex. A likely scenario is for Guile’s FK to come out in COMPLETELY the wrong direction… punish accordingly with sweep, and continue tick pressure with Kara’s. Guile can also be combo’d very easily because of a strange hitbox, so make sure you make the jump in opportunities count, but obviously, you must make sure that they are safe. To do this, again, you have to force Guile to move around so he can’t store an FK, and c. fierce can’t do much against a safe jump in. Guile’s tools are very straightforward on defense; he’ll anti-air from the ground, air to air with jump back RH, and air grab, and an occasional FK. If you deprive Guile of his defensive flexibility (because the flexibility is necessary to his defense) then he struggles greatly.

Again, it’s hard for me to exactly describe how I play against Guile. It’s definitely one of the more “feel” matches, like Chun Li or Bison. Certain times I’ll end the match and just think, “That worked really well.” And think… “What, exactly?” You just have to rely on your mobility, footsies, and smart jump ins to make this match happen. Again, Guile sucks at chasing you down, so capitalize on defense by creating space. Sonic Boom pressure is pretty scary and Guile can deal some nasty normal combos, so make sure you have your EX ST ready. A lot of guile’s like to meaty SB to get things going.

An EX RCF can catch a Guile going for a meaty Sonic Boom setup if he’s not paying attention. Also, stocked ultra should kill all of his “risky” Sonic Boom setups, like jumping after a Sonic Boom, dashing behind it, etc. If he still does them, free ultra.

Can someone PLEASE explain to me on how to make the FBA do the 2 hits without getting lucky and accidentally doing it? Im tired of getting focused out of it

Only EX version does it.

You don’t press it a directional, just punch. You have to use it a little earlier than a normal strike, too.

When you do a Flying Barcelona Attack and during the drop part the opponent decides to FA, can you ALWAYS get the throwing, drop-move as long as you time it right and hit the opponent as close as possible? Because when they FA during the FBA, I don’t know if I should cancel the attack or to go for a drop.

Also what is the best BnB combo/block string to use? (c.lp, c.lp, c.lp > c.mp?)

Focus Attack doesn’t stop an Izuna, if that’s what you’re asking.

Jeenyus, yeah, what Mr. Beef said is right, but focus attacks can change a character’s hitbox’s position, making the timing to execute the izuna different than on a non-focusing sprite. Sakura and Honda are the two more profound examples.

ALSO

Has it been said yet that cross-up ultra can be used as an anti-air? I think a Honda jumped in on me today, and as you know, he has an ass-slow jump, and just to be cute (I had ceased to care about playing seriously by this point in the day) I tried cross-up ultra fully expecting to get stuffed on startup, but I made it to the wall and slashed the hell out of Honda.

I’m gonna start experimenting around with it; I hope that one of you more experienced guys jumps in with their opinion/notes on this.

If you mean that you went to the opposite wall for Ultra, then that’s not cross-up ultra. Although you could probably get that to work on characters with slower jumps, just timing it to hit your wall would probably give you more success. I think you would need a bit of space behind Vega to ensure that you hit the opponent before he lands, though.

I went under Honda… so I think it would be cross up Ultra.

And I think it has more to do with spacing which wall you should favor, considering the hit box on the ultra. Either way, it’s something to play around with to see if we can find the right spacing and characters it can be used against.

Nah, that would just be an ultra from the other direction. I understand what you meant, though.

That’s cross-up ultra. Really difficult to learn, but it’s ridiculous if you can figure out the spacing and nail it. Probably only useful in a really desperate situation.

Ah, I got you, like Blanka’s well timed hor balls.

On another note, there are nights when I really want to quit Vega. I mean seriously, I am one of those people who never get mad about anything in real life… always patient and I chose to just let things roll off of me… but I have some nights playing Vega on PSN and I’m ready to fucking write hate mail and break some shit!!! I get so worked up I can’t sleep at night from the frustration building up adrenaline… maybe using claw for my first main for my first fighting game ever was not a good idea… tonight everyone wanted to use blanka and boxer, and I almost got to the point of rage quitting when the other person selected boxer before the fight ever started. (and I have never rage quit, never once before!) I can only take so many 7-3 matchups in a row against players at a higher skill level than me before getting utterly frustrated with this game.

I always feel like I’m at such a disadvantage no matter what… it always seems like the other character can just throw out safe shit all day long and I have to always block right… but anything I throw out is heavily punishable. I hate how the cast members with chainable jabs/shorts don’t even have to think against Vega…

‘is he close to me? are we equal on frame advantage? JAB!!! the only thing he can possibly do is throw, and the timing is fucking tight !’ Did he try to CH tick throw me? JAB! Did I block RCF? SHORT! Did he FBA? jump back normal!’

Why the fuck does Vega’s sweep have an assy 12 frame startup, and THEN has maybe the longest recovery of almost any sweep? You ask me, I think it’s one of the worst sweeps in the game minus the cast members who have no range at all (Fei, Abel)

Why is FBA one of the most telegraphed moves in the entire game, one of the easiest to hit out of startup, one of the most easily avoided moves, and then one of the most easily punishable moves if you miss the izuna and get a strike instead? All for an assy 90 damage that is NOT comboable?

Why is SHC (non ex) completely unsafe on hit? I’m sorry, but that’s assy. Only supposed to used to anti-air?

Why does RCF (non jab) have ridiculously high startup frames for a move that is also very telegraphed and DP bait? And not to mention it has properties making it very low priority.

Why is there an assy 17 frame startup on POM when it not an overhead and is -2 on hit?

If it wasn’t for kara-throw tick games and CH juggles, Claw would be utter shit on offense.

But I digress. It’s 2 am and I have to catch a flight in the morning to go on a business trip that I don’t want to go on and I haven’t started packing yet… I just thought that venting on here would help a little bit with the frustration.

Switch up Claw with Bison. Surprisingly similar play styles, and Bison’s links are EASY compared to Vega’s. Otherwise, don’t take PSN too seriously, man. I’ve seen shit on xbl that doesn’t even begin to make sense in those match-ups. Safe dash sweep? Mashing jab out of block stun and beating throw attempt, even though I’m at positive frame advantage? Screw it.
Certain nonsense will always be applicable online just because of the frame instability, and characters without fast, chain-able attacks will always suffer.
