Who’s a good backup for Vega besides the shotos? I love the matador, and I plan on maining him all throughout SFV (unless theres some bullshit nerf down the road) but getting bullied in the corner is started to become annoying. Like Flash said, one mistake with Vega could cost you the entire match… So Suggestions?
A lot of opponents will start neutral jumping you once they knock you down in the corner…block, kkk v reversal (you will disrup their timing )…cmp or back throw…you can also wait for a window and cmp>ex roll…even if they block you will push then far of the corner…you can also try to walk under a jump in…neutral jump and wall bounce…even try to barcelona or ex barcelona to the other wall…it takes some patience and looking for the window…off course there is also any normal+ v trigger to scape the corner…also ex ASE is throw invincible…is a hard read but works as a reversal against throw attemps
I went with Chun, admittedly she’s pretty difficult and I don’t see too many chuns online. I’m interested in Juri too. Hopefully she has good combo potential to compliment her psycho personality like Vega.
thanks, I’ll keep this in mind. I’m in the 2X,XXX ranks, haven’t seen much neutral jumping but it’s sure to come soon. I neutral jump a lot to keep opponents guessing or to go for an air throw.
I literally save V-reversal for escaping the corner or confirm into super. Usually don’t use it otherwise. I feel s.LK into V-trigger on hit or block is such a great corner escape.
Well I been in Japan a week so I havent been active, but Comboing into ASE is much better than people give credit. Rather easy to combo into and 3 of them off of shorts/jabs is like 55% or so while building meter.
Yeah i’ve thought it was good for a long time. I think people discount the benefits of claw on a ton cause it’s easier to just dismiss it. The Oki situation after ex ASE is also pretty nice
I feel much more comfortable in the neutral game with claw off now - than I did with claw on.
I would try to use ASE and got counterhit by sweeps and even jumps so many times. When meterless, I would punish unsafe stuff with hardly anything.
Claw off is the safer way to play and it actually gives you a real offensive.
With claw on - I had to rely so much on pokes and V-trigger damage…and it generally took more effort to KO someone.
That’s just my experience and I wouldn’t want to trade momentum and a command grab for pokes that just look better - and are only better by a slight margin.
Edit: As it is, claw on is vastly inferior but it could have been much better with a few tweaks - EX ASE actually moving forward to connect would be one of them.
I don’t see claw as vastly inferior to hand. They serve different purposes in different matchups and have different damage output depending on resources.
Sometimes claw is better and sometimes hand is better.

[] better range on st/cr mp in neutral and better empty cancels in to vtrigger damage

I think there is no reason to stay in one stance for a whole fight. Each stance has advantages. During the ebb and flow of a match managing your stance is part of optimizing Vega play. Generally claw builds meter and hand should spend it. Claw builds grey damage and hand can more easily get the hit. Claw slows the pace and frustrates, hand wants to get in and overwhelm.
I wish I could start the round without the claw. In most of the match ups, clawless punishes, oki, superior hit boxes and speed are way more valuable than a little extra reach. I only use claw for Zangief and counter hit stance change combos. Sometime I get bored and put the Claw away against Gief.
Not a pro by any means, so I could be wrong, but I have way more fun and perform better without the Claw.
Actually you SHOULD stay clawless all fight against Laura and Cammy, and probably Mika as well (not sure about this match). This video is a perfect example.
The problem is “slow the pace and frustrate” simply doesn’t work for Vega because there are many characters who have normals who are just as good or better - with the ability to actually cancel into damage. While you get your st.MP to hit a few times for petty damage, they can get their crush counter normal to hit you for a lot more damage and stun.
Any time you stick a poke out with claw on, you’re risking getting hit by something far more dangerous. The risk reward is simply not good enough.
On the other hand, if you risk your limbs with clawless, you can at least cancel into ex roll for good damage and some excellent meaty pressure.

Cammy and Mika definitely… Laura I don’t think so.
According to the casuals i had with Will2pac Laura, yes. It is a must if you want to win. And your gameplan must be trying to make Laura block normals and staying offensive all the time with footsies and whiff punishing. With claw-on it is soooo hard to win against Laura, pressing claw s.HP which is Vega only cancellable normal that leads to damage can get you killed in this match, same for s.MP with claw on.
Imo if i see a Vega fighting Laura with Claw on i automatically assume that the Vega doesnt know the matchup, or that the Vega is trying to test new things, or that he is not playing to its fullest.
I take it the extra reach is worth the trade-off? If that’s the case, I presume the goal is to remove the Claw through a stance switch combo or knockdown before going on the attack.
