I like the fact that you can switch up his fighting style (Claw/No Claw) and that he can command grab now. I also like the fact that once you lose the claw you can’t pick it back up for the rest of the round. He’s gonna feel like a completely different character now.
Bison came back with gray hair
Ken decided to style his hair like Avatar Korra
Vega said 'You know that episode of Seinfeld?? Yeah, thats the one. I want to fight in a shirt like that’
Birdie came back looking more like Ostrich
I didn’t think it was possible for him to be out, as he is the most unique and original char design by Capcom imo, but I didn’t expect him to be revealed this soon. Seeing that gorgeous face on Eventhubs and reading “Vega joins SF5” made me scream. Like, real loud, Vega scream. He is my favourite game char in the world. I play SF just for this guy.
I’m not sure how that clawless Claw will turn out to be. But it certainly is much better than losing the claw and not getting anything to compensate that. Now we have this compensation.
Roses seem great. And I also see new specials. Let’s go.
His st.hp and it is in the direction of an uppercut. It seems it can function well as an AA but it is not a very reliable AA. I will explain why, later. Btw, it puts the opponent into a huge hitstun and from the trailer it seems to have 8 frames of start-up.
His V-skill. And this is the part about his V-skill that was not told. He can cancel his normals into his V-skill. You don’t need to be attacked. He cancels the cr.hp to his V-skill in the video and punches Necalli in the stomach after his graceful spin. What we saw was the first hit of his st.hp and he canceled it into his V-skill. And the hitstun from that first hit is THAT big. And why did I say “punch”? Because mid-v-skill, he hangs his claw on his belt! So, it seems, we can sheathe it also during the V-skill.
This seems to be his st.hk. Hits once and causes knock down on hit with juggle properties. The reach is very high, the start up is not huge. Seems solid enough to be used as a well-spaced AA.
V-skill again. This time, we learn that you can cancel normals to V-skill. He hits Necalli who was falling mid-air after st.hk with it, proving st.hk causes juggle.
His cr.lp. Notice how the slash effect doesn’t match the direction of the claw. The effect is directed to a lower level. I wouldn’t be surprised if his cr.lp must be blocked low. The push-back on the other hand is huge.
Cr.mp. He leans forward but he is not leaning that forward during his cr.mp like before. And so, doesn’t seem to be as godlike, at least in terms of range. But he recovers faster than in SF4.
The second part of his st.hp. This is why st.hp cannot be a proper AA. Until the animation for st.hp ends, the opponent will land back after being hit by the first hit of st.hp. The only way it can be used as an AA is if you cancel it into his V-skill, but that requires a very solid hitconfirm as the cancel window seems a little too early and if your hp whiffed but you canceled it into V-skill anyway, you will be subjected to huge pain.
Also, this second part of hp causes knock down.
FBA (Flying Barcelona Attack) The normal version. It is again very slow, the pause on the wall is still there and he doesn’t knock opponents up in the air.
FBA Claw attack. Notice how close Vega is to Necalli and he still didn’t hit him. The hitbox is like in his face.
But the great part is: Vega recovers instantly after landing and can combo afterwards.
Another point is that, he doesn’t have the claw, so the instant recovery might be special to the clawless version
He attacks with his off-hand. It can be a clawless mp, or a unique attack with properties we don’t know yet. But I don’t think having visually different normals is plausible. So I think this must be a move he has in his arsenal all the time. So, I’m going with a unique attack. “b+mp” maybe?
RCF (Rolling Crystal Flash). This is the roll part. This one hits once, so must be lp.roll and that is why it has a quick start-up. The ex version is also seen later on and it has a huge start-up again, hits 5 times and sends the opponent flying to the other end of the screen.
RCF. This is the new ender for RCF. It seems to be an overhead. I pray for it to be an overhead. Although that part of the video ends before he recovers, it seems as if he cannot recover fast enough to follow with a combo and the push back on hit is also very big.
This is new. It is a grounded izuna drop. This is the ex version. From the video it seems to have 1 frame of start-up. I’m guessing this does HUGE damage, as Vega just tosses Necalli around the stage mercilessly.
Both hits do the same hitstun visually and the second one follows while the other’s hitstun is still in effect. It seems to be a target combo (cr.mk+cr.mk) or just the longest cr.mk in history. Cannot be his cr.hk as we have a screenshot of it being his traditional slide.
EXFBA-claw attack. Hits twice and like in the normal version, you land and recover instantly and follow up with a combo.
However, another great thing is, if you knock the opponent with the first part of ex.fba and do ex.claw attack in the air, it puts the opponent into juggle state! I think this is huge.
V-trigger, Bloody Kiss. Vega sends roses first, comes and attack with a move resembling his Sky High Claw, except he doesn’t go to the wall. It seems to have three versions. He can go diagonally to the air, diagonally from the air down or horizontally.
BHC. The first part again knocks the opponent to the air. And the Super flash is not even on the wall, but when Vega is on directly top of the opponent in the air.
And we should note that Scarlet Terror is missing.
The claw, no claw thing is really interesting I hope they go really indepth with that. Vega’s original design is already a lot of fun.
The frilly shirt, I wonder if that was vega’s decision?
I’m happy to see Vega, strangely. I found him very annoying to play against for the longest time, but in the end, he became one of my favorite opponents. Hopefully the initial frustration doesn’t hit me again in SFV.
On the topic of him being charge, it seems possible that he could be a mix now. However, one of the things that stuck out to me throughout the reveal trailer was how much EX was being used. It’s been done in other games where the EX version of charge moves takes less charge time, or, none at all. Perhaps they were just flooding it with EX because the EX versions of his moves have combo potential for a snazzy trailer, but, it could also be due to charges being different on EX. Something to consider at the least.
He is not going to be a full-charge char but will only have certain commands like Bison, but that’s about it.
Also,
I’ve spent hours on a huge breakdown post and not even one comment about it.
My heart is broken.
