Vega (Claw) Thread

I use Vega’s aerial attacks since Dic doesn’t have a dp-like move other than Scissor Press Nightmare. Pokes tend to be difficult since it seems Bison has better pokes and power. Any suggestions for Claw v. Dic? Its well known this is one of Vega’s bad matchups.

My not so expert opinion involves: keep him at a distance. That way i can sit on a charge to counter 90% of his options.if i knock him down i try Izuna loops, mixed with claw dives should he try to meet you in the air with a jumping medium. Oh and jumping fierce is your best friend cos of his lack of antiair but beware dictators jumping mdium.

He means if you crouch under a hurricane kick & they fly to the other side. You’re not gonna anti-air a normal crossup with it.

You mean the Sky High Claw? Very, very dangerous. It is so easy to miss and you’ll usually just sail over their head, right into the corner.

I had some bouts with a skillful Dic today and he loved to spam j.mp; when I discovered this, I took a more defensive posture and, as Branta recommends, used Claw’s anti-airs. Never underestimate the power of waiting and observing…and unleashing a Scarlet Terror. The point is not to get caught in the air or else it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out!

Claw>>>>>>>>>everyone not named balrog.

Claw is a flamboyant rapist but then I started to use st mk now he is a god:rofl:

I see. So you recommend not jumping much against Dic? I figured since he has no dp, he should be fair game to wall dive, or am I incorrect?

Well, the match has been discussed before, but it’s hard to go through 27 pages, so I’ll just say that wall dives are much safer when Dic is on the ground.

An inactive Dic is a dead Dic. If you find he’s the type whom likes to charge, pounce on him and try to get him in the corner. Neutral jumping HK and HP in the corner usually spells death for that type of Dic. Mix it up with some tick throws of your own.

If he’s the hoppy type, you’ll have a more difficult time, but be patient. Walk under and throw. Use your anti-airs. It’s tough.

Thanks, I can beat most M.Bison’s, but there are some Bisons out there that are plain incredible and give issues. I’m going to experiment neutral jumping moves for a while.

If I have the charge I tend to try the scarlet terror vs Hurricane kicks. I don’t lke fighting Dic, I win a lot, but I struggle vs good Dic’s. Aerial claw seems to work well vs many characters who are in jump-spam mode, but it probably isn’t the best vs leaping Dic’s.

I think if you can nail the timing so you can Scarlet Terror Psycho Crushers, some Dic’s will really struggle, alot seem to rely on it and the ensuing tick. Its one area where I need to improve really, I can Scar Terr anything from match start, but i can’t seem to time it vs the faster horizontal moves like Psycho Crusher, Sumo Torpedo and beast roll. I’m sure it can be done, I’m just not there yet.

Lately I’ve been really struggling to pull of throws for some reason - is it better to hold across and press the punch button after when close or press across and punch at the same time?

This is really more a matter of reflexes and timing working together. It’s a practice thing. In fact, since Training Mode allows you to turn on hitboxes and vulnerable boxes, you can learn this a whole lot faster than I did in the arcades when we didn’t have the luxury of such a feature.

But…basically…invulnerability frames always beat rushing moves…so do it at the last possible instance. Should be pretty easy given the Scarlet Terror’s move input.

This is another timing issue. It doesn’t matter how you do it. It’s when you do it. Timing…plain and simple. If you can do one frame links, you can time throws when you need to.

Oh…and you have to know Claw’s throw range, too. Again…it comes with practice.

Learn to love practice. You can’t be Allen Iverson here.

I’m gonna stop trying to counter Lariat unless it’s done completely point blank to me.

The risk/reward sucks.

What happens? I thought slide beats it clean so long as you have the spacing correct?

It does.

The reason is that the recovery is 10 times more deceptive than ken Lp Srk.

Scarlet Terror works wonders against Hurricanes, but Shari’s answer of a S.MK works on reaction if a charge isn’t built.

Timing of the Scarlet is rough for the fast moves and I don’t really try unless I am going Psychic. For the Psycho Crusher, Sumo Torpedo, and H. Beast roll can be answered with a back j.FP. Works wonders. If you feel evasive, you can counter with a single KKK backflip, and throw them once they land behind you.

Throws? Get close, keep pressing forward while pressing Strong or Fierce. Mash both buttons if possible.

When you say ‘a back j.FP’ you mean jump backwards and use Fierce Punch on the way down? That really works? That’s quite surprising, I’ll have to try that as at the moment I tend to take chip damage or get caught on the jump with the rush moves.

I used to have the throws down a treat, now I just seem to have lost it, although I did pull off Vega’s normal air throw by accident the other day - I was beginning to wonder if it was in HD Remix…

So timing on throws - say I want to do a suplex, I hold across to send him walking across the screen. Then as soon as he is in range - tap heavy punch or middle ? If I’m holding back to block and someone is trying to tick me, I should be able to just hold back and tap a throw button at the right time and he should get it provided the block stun isn’t stopping him?

I should really try to get the flips into my game, I never use them at the moment, but when I play the top 500 ranked Vega’s they throw them in from time to time and I can see where they can be useful… I think if you can string a scar terr onto one it could be great for just buying you time to get a charge - but I haven’t experimented with it yet.

That’s exactly what I mean in terms of jumping back j.FP. Usually stuffs those moves clean.

Both punches work in terms of throw, and yes, holding back will still get you throw PROVIDED they land extremely close.

I think the flips are underrated and many players don’t give this move a lot of credit. Its all a matter of timing. A Ken who jumps in and kicks early can be avoided with a single KKK backflip and suplexed upon landing since you aren’t stunned. This also works wonders against people that you know will use a waking reversal from knockdown. When they are about to recover, I jump towards them and do a single KKK backflip, and they usually miss their reversal dp or flash kick, which I punish accordingly with a suplex upon landing. During mirror matches, single KKK backflip is gold when a walldive is coming, and if other Vega lands close when you avoid claw, you can usually get a suplex off of him.

Yup, Scarlet Terror charges well with backflips. Great stuff.

Jumpback Fierce is as you’ve touched upon a great tool against Blanka.

Beats Ball for great damage since Blanka takes more damage if he is hit out of it and resets the spacing for almost free.

While you are doing it against Dict and Honda try to hold down while you are jumping. If you hit you can generally link into: C.mk C.mp into opposite wall dive which is very effective against Honda and Dict.

Jumping forward F.Punch can also stop Blanka’s Vertical Ball. I also found that Neutral J.FP stuffs buttslam pretty good.

Is it just me, or does opposite wall dive tend to be most effective against charge characters?

I can understand your thinking. Trying to neutralise a charge by double-crossing them up works great. I find it safer if done while they are dizzy or on the deck. You seem to be very vulnerable on the way up doing the opposite dive. Honda’s standing Fierce can get you, I don’t know if any of Blanka’s standings hit high enough, if Guile is crouching he’ll flash kick you - but sometimes people are a little slow and you end up on their wrong side, so you can izna drop.

I find the wall dive is riskier at either wall if your opponent is in the corner, the great thing about it is it’s ability to multiple cross-up.

Would like to challenge some of you handsome fighters. I’ve been having trouble w/ this matchup(I use gief) So if you’re a really really good vega player, hit me up in Live.
