ok, this might sound retarded to alot of you, but I’ve been out of the VS scene (or whats left of it in states by the looks of things) for quite some time. Looking the noho’s tier list and site everything seems to be centered around VS and not VS2 or any of the sequels.
Is VS the game to play in that case? Whats the reason no one in Japan (or elsewhere, I don’t know) plays VS2 for instance? Was there no arcade release? Did it end up sucking really bad at highlevel play? All signs seem to point to people playing VS competitively still but not the other games.
Point is I want to get back into it but want to dive into the right version of the game. SSF4 is fun but I also want a more offence oriented game and VS has always been a top choice for me.

Okay welcome back into the vampire scene. I will give you the rundown on the current state of the scene right now going game by game from a ggpo perspective.
Vampire The Nightwarriors (Darkstalkers 1) is not currently played by anyone as far as I know (sometimes I play this game for fun on the side). Not on ggpo but I know no one plays this shit on supercade.
Vampire Hunter Darkstalkers Revenge (U.S. Title- Nightwarriors Darkstalkers Revenge AKA Darkstalkers 2) Is played by very few people as of now. The room in ggpo is always dead for the most part you have to ask people to play it usually. I hear that Japanese players go in there at around 2AM sometimes but don’t push your luck. Game is real good though solid game.
Vampire Savior (AKA Darkstalkers 3) is the game currently getting the most play on ggpo right now. The room fluctuates around the times of the day. In the morning hours top level Japanese players come in and dominate the room it is a site to behold as you will see high level play nonstop. In the afternoon Americans all come in to play and from their it gets a little random but thats how the room goes.
Vampire Savior 2 is a semi sequel to the game that it was named after. Vampire Savior 2 for what its worth is not a very good game and here is one reason why: http://www.emuparadise.org/MAME/select/vsav2.png. The picture in question shows a normal character select screen however, if you look closely 3 characters are missing: Talbain, Sasquatch, and Rikuo. That is not the only problem with the game oh no. Dash in combos were taken out of the game, Dark Force System changed so that characters have a universal system where they do red damage only, no air chains (air links like in vampire hunter), etc. Pretty Much they took out everything that was fun in the first game and made the game boring.
Vampire Hunter 2 is a semi sequel to vampire hunter utilizing the vampire savior 2 engine with vampire hunter music as the bgm of choice (which is awesome cause those themes kick ass). However this game sucks too because it runs off of that crappy vampire savior 2 engine and take a look at this character select screen: http://www.emuparadise.org/MAME/select/vhunt2.png. So all the characters are from vampire hunter 1 but look at that fucking hole on the top of the screen does that shit look right to anyone.
Short Version- Vampire Savior is getting the most play. Vampire Hunter kinda gets some play. Vampire 1 no one plays, Vampire Savior 2 and Vampire Hunter 2 suck bad.

I did jump over to the Vampire Hunter thread here and it looks like a mess. Not only is it smaller but it seems that everyone’s favorite thing is that they claim it is “more like sf” since the pacing is slower. Although this happens to be the reason that I want to play a DIFFERENT game lol. I don’t want something that plays like SF4. That and there seems to be a few other characters (at the expense of losing different ones).

Deep down inside though I do wish that Capcom wouldn’t have separated characters from game to game. It would be nice to play a game that has both Taliban and Donovan in it. Oh well, can’t have everything. Jedah and Q. Bee, here I come!
Also, the unique Dark force abilities are great since it helps differentiate each character even further. I like that everything is not universal. very cool.

Emphasizing that Night Warriors is more like SF has always seemed weird to me. Especially because I main Morrigan in NW and she plays like butter with hop dash galore and instant-overhead speed blitz. She feels nothing like an ST character. But I can see the point with Gallon, Zabel, Donovan. They play like VS paralysis victims.
On a side note, the hit frame data is awesome. Jedah and Morrigan’s designs make much more sense after seeing it. (IMO)

Hunter is like playing Savior in Molasses. Its really not a bad game… It just feels massively dated when play side by side with Savior
The reason the characters are oddly separated from game to game from VS onward is because the CPS2 system simply didn’t have enough storage space for the graphics for all 18 of them at once. Although honestly, I don’t know what they were thinking with Savior 2 and Hunter 2 period…
I think people always say NW is like SF because NW’s pacing is a lot slower than VS’s, which gives it a SF feel, even though the general gameplay mechanics aren’t very Street Fighterish.
NW is nothing like SF imo. As far as the overall movement yes…the mechanics and character variety no.
I wish more people played VS. Cause when capcom tried to make the game more accessible like they did with vs2 and later with ssf4, everyone in the VS community said fuck that and went back to the more technical version. Now, capcom can shit out a sloppy #2 and you would still have players thanking capcom for putting more games out!

For those interested there’s been a Lua Script update : Lua | print(“CPS-2 hitbox display”) - Cps2-hitbox.lua - B0YU3Vig - Pastebin.com
On like the first couple lines there’s a DRAW_DELAY = 1
You set that delay to a higher value and then the frames sync with the hitboxes. The above video(s) were NOT done with the new script, the script came out around the same time as that last video.
Also FYI that script should also work with SFA3 too now.
