This thread takes me back to the time I was lucky enough to find the Versus Books Alpha 2 guide at this little grocery store in small town Indiana, where I lived at the time. Don’t know why the hell it was there of all places but I’m sure glad it was. I was a huge SF2 fan but while reading the guide I realized how little I actually knew about the SF series. “Zoning” and “Mind Games”? I didn’t know what the hell the book was talking about. All I knew was I’d been left behind and had a lot of catching up to do.
I wouldn’t say I ever caught up to the level I wished I could have but I have that book to thank for enlightening me about a lot of things SF related. I played the hell out of my PS1 Alpha 2 port and learned as much as I could by myself (don’t have many friends who are into fighters). And now with online gaming I have a chance to face some great players just like I always wished I could back then. So thanks to all the old school SF players, I might have lost interest in SF eventually if not for your work on that book.
When i was younger, I lived in Long Island, NY and went to the sunrise mall to play super turbo and the alpha series. when there were so many local arcades, there wasn’t much reason to follow the other bigger scenes, unless you heard about it in big magazines, or a random guy from the city/WC came by and told us about the arcades in california.
Anyways, although I knew about WC arcades, I had never heard about the big players until I started seeing their names pop up all over the place in FG strategy guides. It blew me away that people could do these crazy 50% combos. It was tough, because I never saw them IRL, until I traveled to CA to visit my cousin back in the mid 90’s.
It’s kinda crazy seeing people like Valle, Watson and Choi still in the scene, and I gotta support them in all my nostalgia. They were like far away warriors you heard about, but never really knew if they were real or existed. Internet has spoiled us all hahaha.
anyways, in terms of Valle v. Daigo, it’s kind of a battle of “mythical” creatures to me (I don’t literally believe they are equivalents of mythical creatures, or rise to the level of great celebrity, but they are huge celebrities in the FG community). As a kid i KNEW the Japanese players were godlike, and that kids in CA were the best in the US (we figured they just had immigrants from JP and their proximity to Asia afforded them greater access to news etc. remember no internets).
To me, Valle is kinda the under dog, and he represents my country, and the time period when I got to play SF the most. Daigo represents this older gods type of character, with the strong tradition and history. I don’t really care for who wins, I just look forward to the fight! (and hope one day i can take em on in a few matches… than god for the internet).
They should’ve done a Valle vs (Insert any Top Japanese Player) in Alpha 2 instead of Alpha 3, then you would have had some serious business in there. Imo, Alpha 2 was Valle’s game, and had this of been the USA vs Japan scenario, we would have had a different tune being sung.
Anyhow, this read is still awesome, as always, Valle was my hero back during the mid-late 90’s, however before Valle, my first SF hero was Tomo the Legend, I remember after 94, Tomo just up and disappeared, like as though he had only come out of nowhere was a complete deity then left without a sound. Then out of no where a new beast by the name of Valle shows up, it was crazy back then, because I had no idea what happened to my previous hero, however Valle was an absolute beast. I swear, you can write a greek drama play about these players.
Choi gains my up most respect, beasting out players whom everyone “thought” unbeatable within today’s current top players, and I’m glad Choi set the example, Evolution 2009 should be epic, especially with SF:IV now in the roster, time to see if another legend shows up, or if one of the olds is again the one to take the mantle.
