Utah Thread: Arcade Edition @ GameGrid

Wade, I’ll take at least one of those 360 FightSticks off your hands. Maybe both.

Not sure how to get in contact with you. I’ll pm you my number in a few minutes. Send me a text or something if you still have them.

Late

Hey guys,

Sorry to pull the old bait-and-switch. First I was out of town, then I decided I couldn’t stand playing on the pad (needed a stick), then life came along and, well, you know the rest.

The good news is that I now have a TE & and SE. They’re both great, but I really love the TE.

I have played a little online, and I’m trying to get up to speed with the game (I haven’t really played any SF since HF). Some of it comes back fast, some not so fast. It’s kind of surprising how well I remember the strategic part of the game, actually. However, my execution ain’t so swell. And I’m playing it like sf2 still (don’t wake up early ever, minimal use of focus attack, hop forward/back), so still kind of fleshing the game out I guess.

Oh, and I can’t DP online to save my life, wtf?

Anyway, once it settles down a little for me maybe I’ll contact you guys and we can hook up.

hey i have an se that i put sanwa parts in if anybody wants it ill sell it for 150 just pm me

Wade,

I’m actually put sanwa stick and buttons in it as we speak. . .is it hard to do?
Kelly randomly stopped by if you want come over for casuals but bring the TE stick.

had

shit man i would have stopped by you should have text me haha oh well.

its easy the stick is just 4 screws and a plug and the buttons are just plugs. just be careful not to pull the wire out of the connectors on the plugs they can be a bitch to get to come off sometimes

Dude,

Two of the “quick disconnects” were a bitch getting off the button. However, the stick was shitty. I have one stick w/o the mounting plate, and one stick w/ the mounting plate. I tried to reuse the mounting plate of the SE stick and use it w/ the stick w/o it’s own plate however couldn’t get the mounting plate off the SE stick. The screws were impossible to get off.

All done now though, my stick feels amazing, all dark hai buttons and dark hai sanwa jlf stick. This shit is just as good as the TE stick. I’ve learned not to be so fucking aggressive w/ the stick. Stick only needs to be three pounds.

On another note,

I was talking to Kelly, and he was like instead of saving all the money towards the end, we should just give the prize money at every ranbat. I kinda agree but I have an idea I’m gonna throw out there. Ranking battles would mean shit if you gave all the prize money out at every ranbat, your overall ranking would mean shit in the end cause you don’t get anything.

There are going to be ranbats on 4/11, 4/25, 5/9, 5/23, 6/6, 6/20, 7/11 (I’m skipping 7/4 b/c it’s a holiday and I’ll be too wasted to play SF4). EVO falls on 7/17 to 7/19.

We have** 7 **Ranbats before EVO. Why don’t we do this: Every ranbat, half the money goes to the WINNER. The other half of the money goes to the top 3 ppl of the Ranbat season and is split 70/20/10.

What do you guys think? I think it’s a great idea. . .trust me I’m a Dokta

It seems Kelly, Dana and I have opinions on this. Go ahead and speak up if you want things change, I just want ppl to be happy and compete.

Well good luck this week on 4/11/09 at Play N Trade at South Towne Mall. Remember this will be officially RANBAT UTAH 1.1 (season 1, tourney 1).

Hopefully Dana will post after me about details of tourney again so we don’t have to thread search. I’ll ask Bobby/Johnny for updates.

Also as far as Rules, these are the ones I like (doesn’t mean we have to use them, but they make it fair and expedient):

Rounds will be set at 2/3 until grand finals, which will be 3/5
Tournament will be double elimination
Best of 3 matches for winners brackets, and losers bracket will be best of 1 however 3/5 rounds until loser’s semis which will be 2/3 rounds best of 3 again
All characters allowed
You keep same character unless you get knocked to loser’s bracket then one change is allowed

had

Not that I’ll be at many if any ranbats, but I just want to make my usual protest against the best-of-three format. It’s archaic at this point, and the Japanese did us all a favor when they started transitioning to best-of-five with Virtua Fighter 4 and some 3rd Strike tournaments. It’s a better format, provides more decisive winners, more exciting matches, gives people more chance to adapt, etc.

Here are my proposed rules.

Rounds 3/5 for the whole distance
Double elimination
Best-of-three matches until grand finals, which would be best-of-seven.
All characters allowed
You can change characters after any match (not series, but match) loss.

This keeps matches to a standard format, keeps us from having to ever detour to the options menu, and allows players to get out of bad character matchups in case they get countered (either intentionally or circumstantially) at the select screen.

Any existing byes go to the top ranked players in order, of course, and actually having the rankings in-hand will help avoid a lot of the kind of drama that I’ve had at a couple of my tournaments over who gets byes. (One time it was so bad that I had a guy demand a round-robin preliminary to determine the byes, which completely defeated the whole purpose.)

We could also have a “playoff series” at BATTOU on 8/1 (which will be officially announced in the next few weeks) amongst the top eight ranked players to crown a season champion. It’d make a nice additional event.

Thanks for your input, but HELL NO. Anybody else with any ideas also? Too long of a format, I would love best of 100 but for local ranbat and when we will end up starting these, we need to finish somewhat at a respectful hour. Most guys have church, booty calls, and I don’t know what else to attend to later that night. I’ve seen how the last 2 months have gone holding these “get togethers” we need to be realistic. Too long, ppl get bored also. This is better than one and done but I don’t want to make this too long.

These are ranbats not EVO finals, most of the other ranbats on these forums are consistent with what I proposed. Appreciate your input, but when I say I’m open to ideas, I wanted the ideas of those in attendance. So not sure if this affects you b/c you probably won’t be at any of these ranbats. But if you make it to three of these ranbats then I’ll take more what you say into consideration. Sorry no disrespect.

had

Could you please post something more in the way of an explanation than “hell no”? No offense intended, I’d just like to know what you find wrong with the standard tournament format.

If it’s consistent with existing standards then I’m fine with it, I just don’t want to see us doing things any differently than other regions.

I think your idea of ranbat cash going half that day and half saving for the top 3 at the end of the season is a great idea. But I also think that the half being divvied up that day should be 70/20/10 as well, not JUST to the winner.

We need incentive for people to want to be at every single ranbat, as many people as possible, so giving out the $$ each time is essential. If people pipe in saying that all the money should be divvied out at each ranbat, then I’m fine with that. I mean, the champion at the end of the season would be the best sf4 player in Utah right? That’s incentive enough

I also want to say that I’ve not liked the way we’ve done character selection. The EVO way is to pick whoever the hell you want, and if you win you have to keep the character you picked and if you lose, you can pick a different character. You do this for EACH MATCH.

In our current setup, I really, really don’t like that people are forced to stay with a character, and if they go to their secondary, they have to stay with that one throughout the rest of the tourney.

What does everyone else think?

Granted, people should be using one character only to maximize their potential with that one character…but not everyone likes to do that. I just think we shouldn’t be so anal about it.

Back to the ranbats…have we decided whether the entry fee is $5 or $3? I think it should be $5. And to make dividing the cash pot up at the end easy, BRING ONE DOLLAR BILLS like you are going to the strip club XD

GGs last night Dana (sick blanka) and Andy…

haha ya some of them wont come off without prying them with a screwdriver. Im thinking about selling both my te sticks and modding another se i kind of like the smaller design.

Im cool with either 2/3 or 3/5 i dont think that the tourneys will take that much longer with 3/5 as long as the brackets and seeding everyone is more organized it should go pretty fast either way, the last tourney it just kept taking to long to figure out who was playing who and shit

Hey Wade… Would have called you, but I forgot my phone at home. If you still have the FightStick with Sanwa parts… I guess one of my friends wants it. I’ll take that one too.

Alright,

Hey how about this for prize money. We should make it 50 bucks or deed to the house. Nah 5 bucks is cool. How about this, I’ve seen this at Arcade Infinity and Gameworks Arizona ranbats. Four dollar pays out, one dollar we save for season winners. I only see 10 ppl per ranbat coming on average honestly unless ppl come out of the woodworks, hopefully it will be 15 but I don’t know. So that’s 40 bucks payout, 10 bucks saved for end of season. 3rd place gets their entry fee back of 4 bucks, the rest is split 70/30 or to best approximation. End of season is 70/20/10.

As far as how we pick players, that’s fine, I misread the rules. Winner keeps their character, loser can repick for each match.

had

Matty,
ya i still have it do you just want to get it Saturday too?

Andy
i like that idea for the payouts but maybe do 3 dollars instead of 4 on the payout per ranbat so the end of season payout is a little more but either way i think thats the best idea so far

Is the entry fee for the tournament tomorrow going to be the same as whatever we decide for the ranbats or something different?

Also, the 4/1 entry split for the ranbats makes the most sense, especially when it comes to avoiding cents during payouts.

I dunno. You have the ranbat winner who is dedicated and shows up for every tournament, and what do they get? They get 70% of a pot that has already been split in half so we can have a payout at each tourney… Unless the entry fee is big enough to support both of these, and I don’t think $3 to $5 is, then I’d rather not do it. Could work if we get more people showing up every weekend than I think we will. shrug

Shrug, still have a hard time awarding each tournament winner more than the actual season winner. They could be totally different people depending on how it works out. Then again maybe a payout each week will keep people interested and showing up? I dunno. Ignore me and just decide how you want to run it. I’m just here to dominate you anyway.

Hey guys, wanted to intro myself to the Utah thread. I recently got out of the Army and moved down here a few months ago. My wife has lived here all her life, but I’m from the sunnier side of Puerto Rico. Quite a ways from my hometown.

I really don’t know what the fight scene is like here in Utah. Downtown SLC the arcades are kind of in shambles. I don’t even know if the Tilt at Zion’s is still there. The one in Gateway looks nice, but I never, ever see people in there. It feels like the place is going to die any month now just from the atmosphere. Am I just missing the popular hours?

Since I’m going to be here, I really would like to maybe get to know the scene. Maybe meet you guys at a tournament or casual match sometime. It would really be nice. I really don’t care about the size of the scene, as much as those that are in it. I’m tired of online match quality dictating to me who I get to meet and challenge when it comes to fighters.

I live in Park City. Got my own ride, am unemployed but in the Army Reserves. From the looks of things you guys are planning a decently sized event. I plan on attending Evo this year, and would love to get the tournament jitters under control before then. Best way to do that is compete right?

Shit guys,

How about this, 5 dollar entry fee per ranbat, tomorrow we’ll all sitdown and discuss how we want to divide the money when I win it ok? Seriously, we’ll just chat in person and talk about it in person.

Inverse,

I don’t know who you are but welcome to the scene. For being a January 2009 member, your reputation is ridiculously high man. We got a tourney tomorrow at South Towne Mall.

More details later today, but tentatively registration at noon, tourney at 1:00 pm. Utahnoobs, one of the members, will update this shit later. You should come out and play, also bring your stick/pad if you come tomorrow. If you don’t have a stick; then ppl have extra.

Arcade scene is dead, but SF4 is alive on console here in Utah. Thanks for serving our country.

had

Sounds good to me. Never been to South Towne but there is a first for everything. I’ll be there, slightly beaten up modded SE and all.
