Utah Thread: Arcade Edition @ GameGrid

Yo,

This shit was fun last night for reals. I’m glad to host these things, no biggie. As long as ppl show up, play, have fun, and just get competitive, then I don’t mind opening my door and buying some pies. Hopefully Matty and the Ducklings can show up next time.

I gotta play more and get decent. Good luck on Tuesday guys

Thanks for the advice Andrew, seriously.

Introductions: Sloppy Joe, coldviper18 Total UT SRK presence: 26 people. Sloppy Joe is Ugly’s brother, and coldviper18 is good friends with coldshadow. Along with Facebook, are we actually getting into the 32 man tournament category? A month ago, who would have thought this would happen? These are good times to be a SF player in Utah.

Rushdown at Andy’s, 3/22–11 players from all over Salt Lake valley and Provo rushed-down Andy’s house Saturday night for some SF casuals and tournament action. Newcomer coldshadow (Brian) had a strong showing, emerging from the losers bracket and getting 2nd place with his trademark Guile that we saw in the GS AZ tournament vids on youTube. The victory this week went to awalk002 (Andrew), who was able to bring the EX Tiger heat with his Sagat, never losing a game to take 1st place. Konqrr (Kelly) wanted the prize money with Rog again, getting 3rd, and DanaTorp trusted Rose more than Guile to get him placed at 4th. GG to everyone: Etelmik (Mike), LordLuxun (Nate) and his bro, Dylan, Coldviper18 (Thomas), FlexYoFace (Chase), and Dash’ (Danny).
During the 4 hours of casuals before the tournament, people were talking and joking around, but when things got serious you could hear a jab whiff; it was all business. Some highlights of the night included the “throw count”, when during one of the matches, coldviper’s Abel was thrown by coldshadow’s Guile nine times in a single round. And who could forget hadouken’s (Andy’s) scream of “NO!!!” when things didn’t quite go as planned for Chun, or his blowing through Andrew’s Tiger Shot barrage with his ultra for a clutch win. Andrew won the “Longest Streak” award with a high of 19 (yep, 19) games won in a row. Oh, and in case you were wondering about whether to buy the new outfits for SFIV: two words, Michael Phelps. Sagat never looked so Olympian.
For most of us, it was our first time seeing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and lemme tell ya, if you like Marvel, you’d better consider buying a Wii. Game looks GOOD.
GG to everyone and lets get more people out of their homes and into the streets for some tournament action!

Grab your friends, grab your junk, but don’t grab your friends’ junk and get out to the tournament. Let’s see who’s going so we can get rides for people; parking might be a bit difficult.

Nice, thanks Dana.

Oh, and glad you liked my YouTube vids Andrew…as you can see, I’m a nut for old school MK and doing things fast

Dude, i saw the flash on flash matches… I’m sorry but that game looks so crappy…

Hey guys,

Question for everyone, who’s going to EVO2K9 this year? I’m very much down to go. I’ll end up flying there as I plan to Chicago or California beforehand and then fly to Vegas afterwards, so I won’t be making the roadtrip :frowning:

This is will be my first and might be my only for quite some time as it’s hard to get days off. It’s from July 17 to 19. I really hope alot of you decide to attends as it’s only 3 days (Fri-Sun) and will be quite fun.

Remember SF4 and HD remix will be PS3 only. You guys are very much welcomed to use some of my sticks as I own 3 of them for the PS3. I’ve recently finished my spending frenzy and I’m awaiting for some amazing cases that will come that just need some buttons, sticks, and pcb. I could definitely use some help with installation and wouldn’t mind lending or selling some of these sticks.

If we could get about 6 + guys to go, then that would be amazing. Dana/Bleyls/Kelly/Andrew/Chase/Danny/Mike/etc, it’s 4 months away but time travels fast, would be awesome to see ppl go.

July 17-19 eh? No school…my birthday is the 18th…hmmm

Andrew, yeah…that MK game does really suck, it was fun for awhile but unlike street fighter (or any other fighting game) you can literally master a character in MKDC in an hour or less, it’s that simple. I sold it awhile ago.

Kelly,

Do you know shit about making sticks, I’m very interested in doing it. But I don’t have any soldering skills or tools. I’ll ask the Bleyls cause it seems they’ve done it in the past.

Dana, you got any soldering skills or tools? PM guys if you can. Thanks.

had

P.S. I’m planning on making a hybrid 360/PS3 stick, maybe 2.

Yeah I know how to solder. I taught myself and built a few sticks and rearranged the buttons on a doa4 hori once upon a time. I’m no expert though…so maybe you should have The Bleyls help you lol

For a 360, you should buy the $25 pads (I forget the manufacturer) they have at gamestop, I heard their solder points are huge. As for PS3? I don’t know, not done much with that.

I definitely want to go to EVO this year. I know Utahsbowser wants to go, but I’m not sure about my bro. Should we start keeping a list of people going and carpools / hotel rooms?

Also,

I’ll be hosting a mini SF4 (360) tournament at my house this Saturday evening.

Date: Saturday, March 28

Address:
8796 Landover Cir.
Sandy, UT
note: Highland Dr. = 2000 E

Time: tourney starts 6pm, arrive before then to register. Reg/warm-ups can start as early as 2pm

$1 entry, 60/30/10% payout if enough people, otherwise 70/30

Bracket format will be several rounds of Swiss, followed by the top 4 ranks from the swiss going into a double elimination final round for everyone to watch and enjoy. The number of swiss rounds will be based on TVs and players and will be announced before the tournament starts.

Games are best 2/3 rounds. In each of your matches, you play exactly 2 games (not best 2/3) and each player gets 1 point per game won. Everyone chooses their primary and alternate characters before the tournament starts.

I haven’t tried this format before. I’m willing to consider changing it if people ask. The advantage would be evening out the number of matches that winners and losers play without taking too long.

This is a good chance to meet some of the more rarely seen players, like Utahsbowser and the other players who also play smash bros. Of course, there will be plenty of time for casuals after the tournament.

sounds fun LordLuXun, count me in!

Psn

I just added all who have a PSN to my friends list.

Also, Dana my PSN tag is Gojirakaiju

hey guys a couple people have asked, i have all soldering tools that u need. text me and we can start making sticks

Hey Dana, could you put real names (first, first and last, whatever) next to the tags in your ultimate update posts? I know it’s hard for me to keep track and it would certainly be intimidating for newcomers to match face, online name, AND real name.

I’m very curious how many people are going to show up at this tournament. it’s going to be sick.

I can’t, as my wife gets off work at 6. But that’s okay–I’d have gotten owned anyway.

Friday I get my box back and can start practicing again. It’s amazing how quickly you lose what little skill you have when you stop playing for even a month.

I’m planning on going to this LuXun (Nate right?). I just have a couple questions:

  1. What is a Swiss format tournament?
  2. Playing two games not best 2/3…what if everyone wins one game and loses one? Who would be the winner? I don’t understand how this would work. I think using the best 2/3 matches is the best option and really doesn’t take that much more time, AND it gives a definitive winner.

Also, I will bring my PS3 if there is another TV and someone else brings a PS3 stick (I only have one).

Let’s see who else is going to this!

Ranking Battles:
Dana and I briefly discussed doing Ranking Battles at the last tournament but we didn’t inquire what the rest of you felt. Seeing as how our biggest turnout was last Saturday at 11 people, we would only divvy points to the top four placers at 10, 7, 3, and 1. What do you guys think? How does Andy feel about making his house THE place for the Ranbat? Although it doesn’t have to be. Does anyone have any recording equipment? Even with a VCR, I could put up the matches in HQ with my uber computer.

Let’s discuss this!

The Swiss format can be thought of as a mix of double elim and round robin. Nobody is eliminated (usually), and you still get to play people with the same win-loss record as you. In each round, everyone is paired up with a person with as close as possible to the same amount of points. In the case of an odd number, a bye is awarded to the lowest points+seed player, who gets full points for a win and can’t get the bye again. The 2 games part is borrowed from a common modification to round robin and is meant to reduce ties in score at the end. If tiebreakers are needed, best 2/3 would be necessary between tied people. 2 games isn’t required, so I can change it to best 2/3 games if nobody likes exactly 2. The 4-man double elim finals bracket would be best 2/3. Looks like I missed that part. Going to best 3/5 rounds for finals and semis would probably be a good idea too.

I will have at least 3 TVs available (1 LCD + 2 CRT), possibly a 4th or 5th as it gets later. I have room for at least 1 more TV, but keep in mind bringing a TV would mean carrying up/down stairs. 360/PS3+SF4 would be helpful; I only have 1 myself. I also have 2-3 VCRs, but no HQ recording ability.

I did some research on Swiss tournaments, it is quite confusing and there is an old program that does the pairing for you and I still don’t know what is happening half the time lol

It seems that playing two matches total isn’t really what is necessary to score a win even in the Swiss format. As the scoring is that some people win and some people lose, then you are paired up with someone else who has the same score as you then you either win and get a point or you lose and don’t. Then you are again paired up with someone with the same score as you, etc.

So what I’m getting at is we should still be playing best 2 out of 3 matches to determine who gets a win and who doesn’t.

Though, it’s clear you understand the system better than I do and if you think it will work, then I’m game

Let’s not bring 27 TV’s though until we get a headcount.

When I brought up recording matches, I meant for potential Ranbats. I can capture video from a VCR and upload it to YouTube in HQ

Hey assholes,

A few things:

  1. I’ve been thinking alot lately about recording matches however Kelly I have not taken the expensive plunge by buying a capture card and shit. Our solutions will be solved soon with
    http://streetfighterblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/sfiv-championship-mode-coming-out-next.html

It seems the Street Fighter IV championship mode expansion should be released next week. YEAH!!! It allows you to record all these awesome matches. Then you can just transfer these files to your computer then “woot woot.”

  1. For Andrew/Dana, since I know you are both going tonight and don’t have sticks, you are welcome to borrow my TE Madcatz stick. Please arrive at my house at around 5 pm. JUST PLEASE, do not let this shit get stolen or ruined. No one is to touch that stick unless they are part of our crew. I just want you guys to do well in this tourney and I feel a pad limits you (unless you are a freak like coldshadow/coldviper). I’m sure Chase will bring his stick. Just bring it back to my house when your done.

  2. It’s fucking amazing Nathan aka LordLuXun says fucking nothing at my house yet he’s like an encyclopedia of nerdness when it comes to Swiss style formats or whatever. I’m actually impressed.

  3. RanBat is great, don’t mind using my house, however let’s not start the points until I’m ranked in the top 4  Just kidding
