Utah Thread: Arcade Edition @ GameGrid

Yeah, I’m fine…benefit of having all my family in Utah. I was able to drive the car (very slowly) into the Einstein Bagel parking lot by Harmons on 13th east and 3300 south. I never take I-80 Westbound from Sugarhouse because of the never ending construction and I just hate that part of the freeway, it’s a good thing right? lol …I Then had the car towed to my moms house and met my wife there to take me home. It was an adventure for sure. I should be upset, but really I’m just thankful that it happened the way it did because nobody got hurt.

Awesome. I was wondering when you would make an appearance, DarkCatalyst

Glad to hear you are safe, Konqrr.

I need to do a better job of learning everyone’s names. Also, what are the chances of the non-SRK members from the GS tournies posting here?

I told everyone at both Ogden 1st qualifiers and Centerville 2nd round to get their asses on SRK so we could unify the local playerbase. Only time will tell how well it worked.

Question:

Just bought a VSHG modded with a plexiglas for the bottom of the joystick.

I would love to place some rubber feets but not sure how to go about this.

  1. What’s the easiest and most secure way to place rubber feets on?

  2. Where should I buy some rubber feets.

Would love to have rubber feets that are similar to the Madcatz Tournament Edition Stick.

KELLY, DANA, JOHN, JAKE. . .your guys help would be welcomed

I have a DreadedFist stick that I got second-hand from a friend in Canada, that has really good rubber feet on it. I don’t know if DF is still around (I’ve been gone for FAR too long), but he’d be a good guy to ask if he is.

Is this what you’re thinking of? I don’t remember the kind of feet the TE stick has.

As it stands, this is a list of people that have posted here, been to a get-together, or that I met through the GS tournament and I have a way to contact them. 21 people…man, this is good.

With that, I’ve been wondering: what is the plan? Here we have a lot of people that live in Utah that play Street Fighter, but what does each of us want out of this association and our love of the game? That is the big question.

After that GS tournament, the competitive fire has been lit. It was awesome to compete, and I LOST! I have to do it again. So for me, I’d love to have a tournament scene. But that’s just me; I don’t know how many of you are or are not down with that. Maybe you just enjoy playing and getting together without the “tournament” aspect involved; that’s cool.

Some ideas that have been tossed around are to get businesses involved (Play N Trade, Versus Games, GameGrid Arcade?) and have them hold tournaments. With enough people registered, especially 21 people from here plus any walk-ins to their store, you know they’d be interested. They get increased business, we get to compete and maybe even get to know more players that want to be a part of all of this. There’d probably be entry fees, too, but where there’s fees, there’s usually prizes or something, right?

Also, there’s holding tournaments, casual play, or both at people’s houses; the casual play has worked pretty well thus far, good turnouts and good times. We have yet to try tournaments, but I’ve made my position on that issue very clear: the more the better.

Anyway, these are just some thoughts that I and some others have had. What does everyone else think? What would you like this to become? Are you tournament crazy (like me), like casual play and hanging out but want to give tournament competition a try, or just straight up casual without all the fuss and increased pressure of tournaments? SPEAK YOUR MIND.

I’d totally be up for some tournaments. Definitely, oh yes.

LOL Nice, Mike. Well, there’s one vote. And me, my vote is yes. I think I’ll track it on our “list” above, those who want tournaments and those who don’t care about them. I will assume that if you want tournaments then casual play is also “yes” unless told otherwise.

Andy, look at Home Depot or even Wal-Mart for some rubber feet. They should have some that have one sticky side you can just put on wherever you want.

Dana, I’m all for weekly/monthly tournaments…hell, even some RANKING BATTLES. I like casual matches too, but you play better and learn more when you are playing to win in a serious match. It doesn’t have to be at some “venue” like Versus Games in Provo or anywhere else, we can do it at someone’s house if they will allow it. We’re all honest people right? We can take entry fees and dish out some cash to the host for the mess we make and divvy the rest to the top 3 spots of the tournament.

It is a big responsibility for one of us to hold a huge turnout at our house, so setting up something at a public gaming center would probably be best. Let’s discuss this.

You guys want me to start throwing tournaments up here in Logan again? I know it’s a big drive for a lot of you guys, but I always seem to pull a good turnout, and I love putting events together.

Wall also wants to start doing house parties down in Ogden. For the last one, back on Saturday after the GS tourney, we had three machines running and many good games were had.

Finally, I’m looking for an in-state stick modder. I have some nine Hori sticks (two Tekken 5s, two HFS3s, three EX2s, and two WiiFS) that I figure desperately need some modding, and I’m willing to pay someone local to turn them into Sanwa/Seimitsu gear. I got to play on Wall’s PS3 TE a couple times in recent weeks, and after that experience, these stock Hori sticks just aren’t cutting it, but I don’t want to pay eBay prices to get one for myself. I’d rather just have all my shit modded up and go that route.

Guys,

Sounds great, how about a tournament this weekend at my house maybe? I’ll check my schedule for sure. This is how I see it. It’s great to drive everywhere, try Ogden or Provo sometime. And we should do it, to make gas and shit fair.

However, I think having one central location be key, and that place best be SLC as it’s pretty the central part between where all the gamers are spread.

I’m always willing to host tourneys no issues. I found a great way to make my living room expand. Got two LCD tv’s and a ps3/xbox 360 both with SF4.

Can other SLC members host tourneys? Danny/Chase? To make your guys drives here worth it, I’ll try my best to supply pizza which I’ve done in the past no problems.

Sounds like a plan Andy…fri/sat/sun are all good for me as long as it’s in the afternoon/evening.

DarkCatalyst, I’d only be willing to take the 2 hour drive to Logan if there was a good turnout, but it sounds like that won’t be a problem.

How about we have people “sign up” to attend these things so we know who’s going and how many people to expect. This would help the host out as well.

I’d say the same thing as Konqrr. I am also able to host tournaments. I can have around 30 people before I need to move the couches to a different room, and I have plenty of other supplies (except consoles/games).

Okay, so here’s what I’m thinking for a Logan event.

First annual PARTY AT THE TOP OF UTAH.

7/31-8/1 - Two weeks after Evo.

I can probably book a hotel cheap.

For tournaments, I’m thinking SFIV, STHD, VF5, SCIV, and one or two others.

For whatever else, just bring what you got. TVs, consoles, games, whatever.

Thoughts?

GGs tonight Konqrr. Wish I could’ve made a marathon of it, but I had to leave since I work tonight and still had a lot of things to take care of.

Wish we could’ve recorded some of those. Especially the Abel/Gief match.

We should get some tournaments going here in the Orem area yeah?!

Just a random question, whats the typical age of everyone here?
I’m not asking you to say “Oh I’m 18” but something like “Most people here are around 19-24”

Most here seem to be in there mid 20’s except Danny, Nathan, and Dillon.

Yeah, I agree with you that SLC should be the focus due to central location, solid number of people in that area, and the willingness AND ability for people there to host events. I mean, that’s where everything seems to be going down, right? You and LordLuxun have already hosted a number of gatherings, so it’s a matter of going where the action is. Yeah, it’s a drive for us that live in Utah Valley (and Tooele! and Logan!), and thanks for acknowledging that. We would expect that when we host/promote a tournament/gathering in other cities that we would be treated in kind, or in other words, “to make shit fair.” Hey, you and Konqrr showed up to a tourney in which you didn’t even play (GS) so that shows me that it wouldn’t be a problem. Definitely a classy move; thanks again for the support.

Okay, so it generally seems that people want tournaments and just generally getting together. Cool. If you want to host something, just post it up, make it official, and like Konqrr suggested, I think that it’d be smart to make people sign up and commit to going. Making a public sign up list would be good, as seeing that 10 people signed up to go is more motivating than 2. There’s a sticky for a Fairfield tournament here in the PacNorth section whose format I like:

Rules
-2/3
-Winner of a match in a set must keep their character/team
-Double elimination format.
-Grand finals will be 4/7.

Games
-Marvel vs Capcom 2
-Capcom vs SNK 2
-The King of Fighters XI
-Tekken 5 DR

Info
-Sign up will run from 12:00-2:00pm.
-Tournaments will start at 2:30pm sharp.
-$5 entry per game. 70/20/10% payout to 1st/2nd/3rd.
-Pay per play.
-Brackets will be made using Tournament Maker software. Seeded based on location.

Location
-Fairfield Tilt, located in Solano Mall.
-1350 Travis Blvd. Fairfield, CA 94533

Now obviously if it’s casuals, tournament rules aren’t going to matter. But I like this format: it’s simple, and people know what they’re getting into and how to prepare. Single elimination? Double? Team tournament? Ranking Battle? 2/3? 3/5? Which games? You may want to put in “BYOC” or “Need help making brackets” or “take off your shoes at the door”. Stuff like that.

A concern of mine is doing too much, too fast. I already know that if I’m going to tournaments once a week in the SLC area that I’m going to get burned out in a month or two, max. The issue for me is time and money. I have a family, I’m planning on going back to school to finish up, and I’ve got a fairly tight budget that doesn’t like it when I stray too far. If you want to hold a gathering or tournament every day of the week for the next year, hey, it’s your place. It’s a free country and it’ll make me wish that I were single again (for a minute or two). If you want maximum and sustained turnout, though, I’d say to schedule tournaments/gatherings far enough ahead and a little bit apart. Maybe there can be a rotation system set up, like Andy’s house one week, LordLuxun’s one or two weeks after that, something here in Utah Valley, something up in Logan, etc. Whatever. It just makes sense, where possible, to give people a way to plan and schedule, not to mention prepare their Guile…I mean, characters…to win! True, not everyone will be able to make every event. That’s not realistic, either. But we can set this up so that most people can attend most of the time. Even the NFL only makes its teams play once a week for 4-5 months, then they get a long offseason to train and relax. Spectators can plan to attend and budget for the price. It all works.

I just don’t want to see this thing burn brightly then die quickly. It’s not exactly my call; this isn’t my group. It’s our group. I just bring up issues/concerns/ideas that I have and see what others in the group think about it.

And yes, I have insomnia.

I won’t be able to go to any of the get togethers for the next 2 weeks. I should be fine once it’s the 16th or so.
