Utah Thread: Arcade Edition @ GameGrid

Sorry I missed the last two Ranbats, unlucky me had both of them on drill dates. I’ll always call if I go, though consider this post a confirmation that I WILL be there on 20th. Definitely.

Yeah, I feel like I’ve hit a wall. When I started picking up SF again in December with HDR I was growing dramatically. I played Chun and I got advice from all sorts of players. I even got to play Alex Valle on Xbox Live (Calipower) and it was an amazing experience. (The guy is chill as hell, virtually no ego shoving.)

I got so much improvement on Bison as the months went on, but now it feels if I can’t get my combo timing down I really can’t dish out the punishment I can. I land two jabs and then I miss a link and I get hit, or command thrown or some such thing.

Halfway in the fight I see his life is at 60% and I’m like… “It should be at 30, if I was as good as I know I can be.” That kind of thing eats at me.

Whenever you guys are holding casuals let me know, if it’s in Ogden I’ve never driven there, so I might need some directions.

Oh, as far as Blazblue and KOF XII are concerned, fuck yeah I’m buying both. KOFXII was the life blood of the fighter genre. It pushed Capcom to continue making games past it’s SF lineup. IT was really KOF vs SF in my mind during the 90’s… fuck Mortal Kombat.

But now it doesn’t feel like KOF is a rival to SF anymore. Fighters have been dead too long. Now they feel like partners, ushering a new age of fighters together. Can we really afford to shun one for the other? For all we know there may never be a SF 5 or KOF XIII. Could we really handle another 10-13 year fighter drought?

Not to mention, we do tourney play. 3v3 KoF ensures that matchups have variety, and that’s some awesome stuff for the spectators. You’ll never have too many mirror matches like in 3S.

Even if both sides pick the same 3 players, it’s possible neither side ends up fighting its mirror. The orders may not be the same either, and you never know who is going to knock out the others lineup first! It’s very exciting.

Coldviper, this looks like PS1 graphics?

inverse, man we missed ya u better start coming more u cant just beat me at a ranbat and then never show again haha. wait til u see the place andy got to hold the ranbats

im down to play bb and kof but i definitely think bb looks better and i know they did the hand drawn sprites in kof but i think it was a big waste of time cuz i like the 3d sf 4 characters and the bb 2d characters both better

Inverse, add me on xbox and we can practice together. I’m all about helping people. I played underrealm today and it was way fun. He has some good combos.

I just want to be able to speak freely if i’m coaching anyone, ya know? I just want to be able to say stuff, practice some blocking/cross up drills, going over some predictable moments, learning how to mix up effectively, being patient, etc.

I will be getting KOF and BB and I will be playing them both. I thought GGXX was the shit and i’ve always wanted to be competitive at KOF. I think this will be a great opportunity to broaden my overall fighting game skills. Plus, the more games you play well, the more you can play/compete. You don’t want to be limited and be some bitch that’s like, “Oh yeah, well play me at Marvel vs. Street Fighter and I’ll kick your ass - this SFIV shit sucks balls, i’m going to go home and jack my penis off, blah, blah, blah.”

I just want to end by saying that I love ranbats so much. They are just simply great.

Also, the team thing sounds intriguing. I think more of a random draft would be best.

hey im gonna add you too my ryu needs some help haha

As far as WoW goes…don’t go there. Just my word of advice. I think both games look great. But it’s more of the gameplay of BB that has me a bit iffy. Here’s an example:

This is DIO playing of course but at this sort of high level of play, I just don’t see the appeal as a whole with the game. If you’re cornered, it’s consistent blocking till you see an opening. Or if you’re unlucky, you get tossed into a throw loop and it’s just over with.

As for KOF, here’s a good example:

In terms of “looks” they both looks absolutely great. So if you’re basing your decision of what the games looks like for your purchase, you’re a fucking idiot. IMO, I would figure KOF would appeal more to the SF scene because of how the games have similar game play. But I’m getting both. I’ve been craving some 2D fighters of this generation. Hell. Let’s not forget MvsC2. I’m eager to get into playing it because I never got a good chance of playing it back in the Dreamcast days. (I was a pad player then. Sad fact)

Yeah, thanks for the games earlier. I need to get my mic situation figured out cause I would have been glad to get some blunt advice.

im loving the 2v2 team tourney idea…

also kof is going to be amazing

damn since ima fps scrub and sf4 is the actual first “fighter” ive ever played someone is gonna have to hold mah hand and walk me through how to play these games lol i’ve never heard of them before

No, they look like Nintendo64 graphics. Kelly told me to write that.

I’m so hardcore I’ll get BB/KOFXII for both the ps3/360. Both look great. And guess what, I’ll still be playing SF4 in 3 months. :karate:

had

 1. Stop focusing so much. Use it to move forward and put more pressure on the opponent.
 2. Learn and use some block strings.
 3. Throw more.
 4. Use EX Hurricane Kick into ultra/super in the corner. I never see you use this and its awesome.
 5. Learn to FADC on both sides
 6. Don’t throw a fireball at the start of every single round.
 7. Zone more with projectiles. You don’t seem to throw to many unless it is start of the round or of the super/ultra variety.

That video just gave me a partial.

A) It’s DIO. Dude is the most beastly Carl player around. Freaking Carl…
B) His opponent was already broken mentally after the second round. He saw what happened and then immediately ran straight into the corner in the 3rd round lol.

It depends on which art style you prefer for the most part. BlazBlue sprites seem to be higher res than the KOF XII sprites. You can notice some pixelation around the edges of the KOF XII sprites… You really notice it against the nice looking backgrounds. BB just all around looks a lot crisper and detailed. Oh yeah, the custom combos look iffy as shit also.

Btw dude, if you think BlazBlue looks the least bit broken… stay away from MvC2 lol. It’s broken and spazzy as shit. Not that it isn’t a good or fun game though. Just not my thing.

check this video out wade, best ryu i’ve seen by FAR, better than daigo imo

That Blazblue match was high level play? Was a yawnfest. I don’t know how you’re going to hold crowds with that kind of play. SF4’s turtle heavy gameplay would get more cheers than that.

It’s like MVC2, I never understood how people got so into a game where the entire point of the game is to not let your opponent play at all. The other guy might as well walked away and ordered a meal on his phone in some of those strings.

I see zero mindgames, just exploitations of mistakes and pure dexterity. You’re really just playing with yourself, not your opponent. Find a gap, and go on autopilot, where the good and bad players are merely seperated not by their ability to read and dominate their opponent, but by how flexible their muscle memory is.

Look at 00:30-00:45, 1:55-2:20, 2:30-3:00, and the stupid joke that is 3:20 to finish. That’s going to be a real crowd pleaser a year from now when everyone is tired of it, I’m sure.

I dunno KoF just looks like crap to me. And almost every single fighter looks awkward when they’re fighting. Like it’s one thing to have different and interesting moves. But most of the styles I’ve seen it just looks awkward. Like I think his name is goro, he stands like he’s frankenstein or something, and he’s all awkwardly big yet can do some really quick back roll. Then I saw another video of some guy doing some super throw or something and he just throws the guy in the air over and over again. Like… if you’re going to do a damaging throw, it’s not necessarily realism I’m looking for… But come on, make it look like it hurts. Look at Zangiefs throws and Abels, they don’t look like anything realistic, but it certainly looks like its a lot of pain.

Everything just looks awkward.

However I have to say I do like the 3 character team going on. I think that would make a lot of fighters more fun. Because I know a lot of us don’t like playing a character everyone plays, so we can mix it up more without biting the bullet and playing some shitty low ass tier character just to be different.

goro is too good in that game (any kof game actually) he is like abel, but does crazy damage, has wakeup options, and has a ridiculously good AA game (best i think)

i cant wait for it to come out, its such a good and underrated fighting game

Yeah I’ll play it. I’m sure I’ll like it too. And after a while I’m sure I’ll get over how certain things look. It does look fun, I can’t say it doesn’t, just awkward.

I’m just a biased guy cuz I was lucky enough to get KOF Machines in my local arcade. We had 94" a lot of those back when I still needed a box to reach the joystick. 97 and 98 made it, 99 had a short run because the arcade we had broke down. Then we got an arcade in the airport with 97-2002 lined up on the wall. It’s probably still there to this day.

Then of course the CVS series came out and everyone loved it not realizing it was KOF format gameplay. Yet for some reason the US didn’t like KOF. I just think the US never gave it a chance. It didn’t get the exposure (games like Last Blade and Garou didn’t either.).

Yet Internationally, KoF has always been world famous compared to SF. SF was lucky enough to have a strong root in the US thanks to its release on the SNES and Genesis. KoF never had a real quality console port. So unless you have arcade blood running through your veins, you just don’t know…!

You just don’t know. :3

We had KoF machines here when arcades actually existed. It just never caught on like SF, MK, or even Tekken did.

Tilt at the Gateway mall actually has KOF XI. That arcade is so dead though. I went there once and was there for like 2 hours just playing DDR and 3S and nobody showed up to play anything. I don’t know how that place stays in business.

It’s pretty big too, pool tables and everything. Not a bad little arcade for what it is.

Edit: Oh shit, PS. Does anyone know anyone who has dual PCB modded an arcade stick before? I’m trying to get my SE 360 ready for EVO. I have a fully assembled MC Cthulhu and an Imp. I’m going to be working on it after next weeks Ranbat. So I’m hoping someone has done this before so perhaps I could get some live tips on how to work it. There is a guide on the Tech forums, but this kind of thing can easily be messed up if I’m left to my own devices. I’ve never soldered in my life. My brother is going to help, but any kind of experience would rock.
