If you want to zone, why not Juri/Poison/Sagat? Zoning with Ryu, he’s particularly the one character with many anti-fireball strats across the roster. He used to do fine in the past due to making some opponents play honest when they get knocked down (which delay wake-up catered for people who didn’t like to deal with safe-jumps), and then cross-ups were there to promote more damage on setups. Again, delay wake-up helped the defensive side too. The only positive side are his pretty good normals, but there are a couple characters who already can do a good job at this department, and more.
Another thing to consider, some characters who have FADC nerfs didn’t severely get affected, some characters like Cammy or anyone else who can backdash -> ultra can still be safe at the right ranges. Ryu isn’t one of those characters unless you are in the corner. Even Ken may be a better choice since you could react focus attack backdash cancel if it hits or not.
Along with that, the match-ups that Ryu did bad in previous versions only got worse in Ultra. Yang is a nightmare now, Chun is harder, Bison is tougher, even Viper to an extent got tougher when it was before an even’ish match-up. There are a lot more not listed, but if you plan to use Ryu primarily for zoning, you’re better off with another character especially that it feels like Capcom is only promoting more anti-fireball tools, along with a good portion of his game getting indirectly nerfed.
Something I’ve noticed, but characters with great evasive options tend to do really well in this version. This includes backdashes, wake-up options that can be safe and be conservative with damage/meter, etc. It’s not that it’s broken either, it’s just that some of the cast didn’t get the proper compensation changes for the universal changes. It feels like they decided to patch characters based on how they did on AE2012, and then release the new changes to make everyone decent, only to forget about how the universal changes impact the characters (kind of like the last minute Guile changes they did. More surprised they didn’t think about other defensive characters though if they really thought Guile was a problem.) Couple that with a bunch of questionable bugs, it only feels that the game in general became very flawed.
Yes you can. You can main a character for 5 years because you like the character and it turns out the character is good as well. It’s a lovely combination when the character you like is also good or at least good enough to win with.
It’s like having to move out of a house you’ve lived in for 10 years in order to go work in another state. Sure you have to go somewhere else for your job because you need the money, but it still sucks to leave a house you lived in for so long.
You can like a character AND play to win. Sometimes they coinside and sometimes they don’t. And when they don’t guess what? You can be pretty pissed about it.
She also gets rewarded with a buff like this one, which might potentially help her against DWU:
-Hooligan Combination now has L, M and H Cannon Strike follow-up.
But seeing this, she doesn´t have any problems with DWU at all:
Seth and Akuma aren´t the only one, who got botched down.
This pretty much sums it up. I would be fine with the sweep being unsafe if the reward was still good. The problem is the reward is meh and the risk is now 40% of my life against some characters. If Capcom didn’t add the s.HP buff at the last second Akuma would literally have 0 buttons that are safe and even with the s.HP the hit box isn’t good enough to use as a primary poke. Not to mention it whiffs completely against some characters
how about putting time and effort into a new char that has faults, Capcom acknowledges that he has faults, and fails to fix them?
3 times?
And the 3rd time they secretly nerf him while saying that they buffed him? Say that the new system mechanics are there to buff him, say that they listened to “fan feedback”
And fools believe their bullshit and defend it?
And then after all of that some dude comes and talks about how his top tier got knocked down a couple pegs and all of a sudden he knows about the struggle. That he feels that Capcom shitted on him.
Like the dude in the avatar above me said: “you try to get the sympy of the people but you don’t get my sympy at all”
yeah this right here. I dont like nerfs tbh but i do hate ppl crying over gouki´s current state meanwhile characters that need help are getting nothing whatsoever
How about we stop the Capcom Oppression Olympics? There’s a nice idea. The idea that just because someone else got really shit on doesn’t mean I can’t be pissed that I got shit on.
I love how me complaining that my character’s neutral game sucks ass now is somehow a sin because Akuma was top tier a version ago. Because you know, nerfing the shit out of good characters really helped those awful characters right?
PS. I’ve played more fighting games than this. I’ve played mid tier characters and I’ve also been playing T-Hawk for the last two versions. I know what it is like to play a shitty character.
This is pure comedy. Also love when people rate Viper in the top 4 when the only person to have ever won a major with her quit playing her because she’s trash.
Somehow, people don’t understand this so I’ll underline it for you all.
People rate Viper in the top 4 when the only person to have ever won a major with her quit playing her because she’s trash.
I can’t wait for people to tell me why Viper beats Honda when Latif and Jayce both got eliminated by Honda.
I can’t wait for people to tell me why Viper is good because of BURN KICKS when most of the cast has a move that low profiles it and I get punished.
Remember when people complained about EX Seismo being throw and strike invincible, when it didn’t even cover all of her start up frames?
Then somehow in Capcom’s infinite wisdom, they decided to make another move throw and strike invincible (EX Q bomb), have it cover all of its start up frames and on the first active frame, and have it act as a fucking anti air that leads into more damaging follow ups on hit.
But wait, all of that doesn’t matter because Vipers got BURN KICKS!
I have no issue with gouki players feeling that they got shat on. I simply don’t have the least amount of sympathy for them.
However: you were the one that tried to make the distinction between being shat on with a good char and being shat on with a bad one.
I take issue with this, because every good player has to do all of what you said, regardless of the character.
People who play bad characters have to practice execution as well (and often times its harder for them because their normals are worse, slower, are harder to link, and are more character specific)
Character-specific strategies are more indepth because they don’t have tools that can work on everyone.
But here’s the thing though: your frame of thought gives you the simple solution to your problem. As you said, nobody is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to play Gouki. Just as there was no guarantee that Capcom would buff low tier chars and players of em are stupid for sticking with them for so long, there was no guarantee that Capcom would keep Gouki at the top. You are just as much the fool for sticking with him thinking he wouldn’t get nerfed as low tier players are sticking with their chars thinking they will eventually get buffed. But at least your char getting shat on puts him in the middle of the pack and still competitive. Being promised that your char would be brought up to at least the lower end of the pack (but nothing more than that) and then getting your fucking legs cut off is a rough feeling.
I’m not going to drag the “oppression olympics” as you said out. But I will just state it clearly one time: You, or any Gouki player on this planet do not have the SLIGHTEST idea how it feels to be truly shitted on by Capcom, compared to DeeJay players. That’s just in this game though. Capcom has done some crappy stuff in multiple games over decades.
…that being said capcom probably does want gouki at the top, and want joke characters like deejay at the bottom. But that’s another discussion.
I know that, but for entertainment purposes its always nice to have “someone playing your guy” you know what im saying? Even a lot of the other fringe characters have a top player that enters tourneys or majors, or at least has them as an alt occasionally. Someone holding it down for the rest of us that dont have the skill or ability to make it. Like literally no one plays this guy anymore, sanford was like the only one after wao dropped him and he wants to find a new alt for sagat instead of oni in ultra.
Overmostheads maybe but he doesnt make it out to majors, and imo has come close to maxing out the potential of the character and even he gets blown up a lot online.
sanford might come back or stay or whatever. he’s been talking about ken, but ken doesnt have oni’s raw damage output, and everyone plays eryu so i doubt he goes there
Because there is a distinction even if people don’t like it.
If I go to college for 10 years to get a PHD in English when I know beforehand that there are very few jobs in it, I really can’t complain when I knew very well that I was going into a field that didn’t have jobs. Yet if you happen to find a job it’s wonderful because you got one even though you weren’t expecting it.
If I got to college for 10 years to get a PHD in Engineering being told there was jobs waiting for me when I get done only to find there were none, I might be more than a little pissed.
If you choose to play with a character that has been bad for 3 versions now I can’t say you have much room to complain. Yet if Capcom chooses to finally buff you that’s wonderful.
If you play a good character who has been good for 4 versions and now he finally sucks because of repeated nerfs you got screwed because you invested time into becoming competitive with the character only to have that time and effort wasted.
Execution is not tied to how good or bad a character is. Some low to mid tier characters were easy as hell to play, but they were low to mid tier because their tools weren’t good enough to consistently open good players.
And even bad characters can have great buttons. Chun being a great example. The problem is they usually have one or two problem areas that get exploited by a large amount of the cast. Chun’s case being that her defense was exploited by dive kick and vortex characters. Against characters who played more traditional SF she was actually pretty good.
I would have to disagree, when you play a mediocre character the strategies often get more linear because you have such few options. It often comes down to “Do this, bet everything on red, and hope it works”. Is it difficult? Yes. Does that given them depth? No. Depth and Difficulty are not the same thing.
When I was playing T-Hawk in 2012, I found his game plan was pretty straight forward. Position yourself as best you can and then go YOLO. Because playing safe wasn’t going to get you anywhere. It’s actually why I liked playing him online because I didn’t have to care. I find his match ups have more depth to them now because he has more tools to work with.
No I pretty well anticipated it.
That’s why when Ultra was first announced I had already started picking up E.Ryu and Yun because I knew Capcom’s tendency of buffing the characters just under the top tier making them the new top tier. I can even point to this in my old posts where I predicted this and other posts where I have stated I was picking up E.Ryu. I’m no idiot. It still doesn’t make me very happy that I’m having to relearn everything in a game I’ve been playing for 5 years.
And actually when I saw the arcade change list I was ready to drop Akuma. The last two buffs Akuma got made me hang on a little longer to see if those changes were any good. They helped fix a few of the problems, but the overall loss of tools is just too great. Hell if they simply just unnerfed sweep U1 I feel Akuma would be just fine but as it stands he has no real damage potential and no real buttons to work with.
Yea Capcom fucked up DJ just like the fucked up Sim, Ryu, Sagat, etc. It’s bullshit just like it always has been. Since Super SF4 half the nerfs have not made sense.
I think most of us wanted buffs not nerfs in USF4 and we got one giant Nerf Sunday. DJ was the cherry on top.
