Didn’t Weaponless Viper do Thunder Knuckle, Seismic Hammer and Burning Kick anyway?
@hunterk, @sloth86, @Augh and all experts here:
Hey guys, I’ve started delving into the world of SSF4AE modding. So far I’ve picked up modifying DDS textures on Photoshop and injecting it back to col.emb since it seems a lot simpler to do than mesh editing. My question is, is there any special software out there that allows you to both see the mesh with applied textures that allows you to edit the textures while applied at the same time? Sorry if this is a stupid q as it seems like everything right now is a trial-and-error process and it seems inefficient. I find that things I put in are sometimes stretched and aligning things, as well as matching shades is proving to be a major pain the behind. I would appreciate any pointers or redirection you can give me.
Thanks and cheers!
Far as I know recent Adobe CS/Photoshop builds allow for importing .obj models in a Zbrush-like manner. Seems it works like the old Deep Paint software, which allowed you to paint directly onto a model and it would sort out what you’re doing as a texture file by itself. I’d love to have access to such tool as it makes fixing texture seams and colormatching child’s play. (youtube/google Zbrush, Deep Paint or Projection Painting if none of that made any sense)
Also most 3d programs will allow for updating texture files on the fly. For example I import a model of Ryu or something, assign his skin to a simple bitmap image which is an export of his texture file (.bmp .tga .dds .whatever), make some changes in a paint program, if I save to that file and tab to Max, I’ll be able to see those changes applied to his geometry model, see what worked and what went wrong.
Having a 3d program due to the ability to view UVW coordinates is really useful too, even if you’re doing just texture based work and not model changes. That basically means you can press a button and see the exact layout of the polygons as they occupy space on your texture sheet. Usually you can export an image of this layout too, to use as a sortof roadmap/position checking overlay as you work on the textures.
YES THERE IS!
The extended versions of Photoshop CS3 and onwards have this feature.
@KudistosMegistos
I forgot to add your tutorial to the list on the wiki(s) after you first wrote it. I’ve added it to the list here.
@Augh, thanks for the heads up. I looked up Zbrush and since this is more like a hobby for me and I’m not sure if I’ll continue doing this for the long haul, it’s too rich for my blood at the moment. Painting Projection seems very interesting as it allows you to skin your 3D models using real life photographs. I wonder if Blender will allow you to do on the spot painting…
@KudistosMegistos, that is a really nice find! Unfortunately, I think my PSCS is too old to be able to do that (the box only says Photoshop CS). Got a link or place where I can upgrade for cheap? Adobe’s site lists CS5 as an upgrade from $199! :-0
If you’re a student, you might be able to get a discount of some kind.
Otherwise, you’ll have to either pay up or “acquire” it by means that I can’t talk about here. N-not that I know anything about that kind of thing!..
Can someone post a full model swap tutorial for things like this?
@Tronleitner
I’m not sure if it supports textures on the models, but you can check out Autodesk’s Softimage Mod Tool, which is free for non-commercial use and still pretty fancy.
Thanks hunterk! I’m downloading it as we speak. PSCS5 Ext is really ideal for me since I’m familiar with PS. However, if this thing allows me to smudge and clone stamp then it will suffice.
I suppose I can check CS3 or CS4, I’d imagine they should be cheaper now even brand new.

A little rush work here, failed to get it as polished as I wanted it to be. Spent 2 hours just trying to get the flasy hair materials looks alright in his intro scene and got a little frustrated. I’ll leave it at that for now before my life get busy and I really need to polish some other WIPs.

Sigh I really need to mod other characters, but I can’t think of anything. Any Ideas anyone???
(Upload files coming after a lil adjustments)
I really like Balrog in the suit looking like a shotta. So I decided to make the textures pop more and add some style to his already stylish garb with the Snake skin boots, the Argyle scarf, the peppered black pinstriped suit and the purple striped shirt n polka dot tie.

Ok, I’m running into some issues with SF4 Explorer. I decided to test a simple skin mod I did but for some reason it’s appearing invisible in game, but looks just fine in explorer. Thing is when I view the original extracted dds file in Windows Texture viewer that part is colored magenta or something instead of the real texture. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Explorer can’t display transparency, is why you see it in explorer but not ingame. that magenta color is how a lot of programs display “nothing”.
Thanks Augh! St00pid @$$ Photoshop had it on by default.
viper without the gadgets cant use specials at all, tahts why some people use to call her “a marvel character” in street fighter.
Yes, I’m completely aware of that. Sloth made a “Weaponless Viper” mod back then, she was barefoot and didn’t have her gloves but had her “armor” from one of the alt costumes (look it up on Youtube). I was just pointing out the fact that in game she did those special moves anyway inspite of being “weaponless”. Wasn’t talking about the technicalities of her specials, was talking about what she actually did in-game.
