USF4 defense and capitalizing on openings

Definitely a newbie to the Street Fighter series in general and been playing USF4 for a short amount of time relatively speaking. Been playing a lot online and have gotten both my Yun and Evil Ryu to C rank. I feel like my offense is coming along nicely as far as putting combos together and getting the timing down for them is concerned. I can do most of my mains’ trials without much of a hitch nowadays. I still get absolutely murked online more often then not and I feel it may be my defense or lack thereof. I seem to really struggle with Akuma’s who zone me with air and regular fireballs and when I do manage to get in their grill they block everything I’ve got and seem to counter whatever I do. I have another issue with guys that just rush me down at the speed of light before I have time to think or register what’s going on. When I play Yun in particular I always try to stay on the offensive and sometimes it work, sometimes it doesn’t but I feel like I’m having a hard time setting the tone/knowing how to apply pressure with him.

I guess all in all I’m having newbie problems and am trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong/how to get better.

You just need more seasoning. When you start to see the same things over and over and over again, it’ll slow down for you. It might take a long time, but eventually the game will slow down.

Also, if there is a specific character/rush down string that is giving you trouble, you can do this -

  1. watch the match you just had in replay mode
  2. play it back in slo mo
  3. write down the combo/rush down that is killing you
  4. go to training mode and record it on the dummy
  5. practice blocking it and/or look for a space where it’s not a block string and practice a reversal

This so much. People underestimate the use of replays so much, every game that has them is a godsend. Always go back to watch the games in which you struggled, look for where it went wrong and make note of it so you can improve on those aspects. Getting pressured and being zoned in your case.
