Used copies of SF IV

Yo dude, I’m not the one trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, Capcom has been integrating a storyline into the Street Fighter since the very beginning. In some way or another it’s been a part of every game in the series. I’m just pointing out that SFIV’s attempt feels shoddy, convoluted and boring.

I’ll be the first to agree with you though in that fighting gameplay isn’t very conducive to a storyline. If it’s going to happen though it can at least be interesting. I enjoyed the BB story mode.

And as for your sarcasm at the beginning, the Street Fighter series has had mini games in them since World Warrior bro, and maybe I’m alone but I liked beating up cars, barrels and bricks and I was totally stoked when I did my first Super Art on an SUV. It’s quirky, weird, unnecessary, but it’s fun, especially with two players.

I take the competitive side of SF pretty seriously, but I’m down for the fun stuff any day.

The netcode is crappy and the best characters in the game seem to be those who veteran players can easily rape new players with.

Had they put more emphaiss on newer characters, the game would have taken a much longer time to become accomplished at, at least to the point where a new player can last longer than about 15 seconds.

I have only been playing it for 5 weeks and I’m also considering putting it down.
If thye don’t have a patch out by christmas they’ve lost me for good and I’ll go back to Super Turbo and GGPO.

Brilliant netcode and gameplay refinement that every other fighting game can only dream of.

Every time I walk into a Gamestop to see what they got (I frequently see just how low certain games get before nabbing em) I see tons of fighting games.

A lot of people pick up fighting games thinking back to the day, or have a friend who bought the game and told the other person to get it and so forth…

I know the first night I had a bunch of people over and we played SF4 everyone was all happy excited with lots of smack talk… Two of them purchased it and I went out and got a SE fight stick.

One of them returned it, the other hasnt touched it.

Haven’t Touched: "I suck so I got bored."
Returned: “I suck so I returned.”

These guys have no real excuse, their exact words were as printed above. They knew they weren’t good and didn’t have fun losing.

On more recent occasions I have attempted to break it out, andusually there is a bit of apprehension… It gets put in, everyone plays a round and it gets to me or one person I know who just plays all fighters well (not as good as me in the case of SF, but he crushes me in Soul Calibur) and the call to switch games comes out pretty quick.

The modern gaming word is just used to winning… Thats why some games get a bad rap of bieng “too hard!”…

Oh and someone mentioned tekken? I work in an arcade, the only fighting game we got is Tekken 5… I have to say I witnessed something fantastic. One of the employees worked at an arcade known for just brutal Tekken players (I wouldnt know I dont like tekken) his two tekken cards are just pumped full of wins and points. He has gone to tournaments and won money off of said tourneys…

I frequently decry tekken (hoping they put back in the street fighter ST cabinet we had previous to my employment there, bad timng I know) and I witnessed as this tekken expert, who has spent hours playing tekken in multiple arcades… got beat by an 8 year old who frequents the arcade… the pro focused on his juggles… the kid… mashed… And I dont mean mashed with intentions, he didnt really know what he as doing… That kid mashed hardcore… Man I have never seen that guy more pissed n my life… He actually got a rematch and won, by mashing…

I’d trade those anime bookends with bonus stages anyday. I can understand Capcom’s reason for denying them in arcades, but they would have been a warm addition to the consoles.

Also, speaking a lot about people not liking all the losses, and not being able to get into it, I have to semi-side with them.

Partitions and hierarchy are simply not there in SF. For example, a mediocre rank isn’t exactly going to face a mediocre person, even though their points may indicate so. There’s always a buncha pale pep talk like “well, you only improve by playing better people”, which is very true to a degree… but, when you can hardly throw a fireball and you’re getting raped by a Sagat vet, that shit is just silly. I wish SFIV could employ a better way to browse for matches, have viewable player stats/profiles/ranks, and lobbies to accompany all skill levels of players.

If I throw in Halo 3, right now, I’ll be matched up with players fairly close to my skill (actually, they’d probably kick my ass since I haven’t played in about a year), yet in SFIV… who knows. I’ve literally gone from playing a guy who messaged and admitted he could barely pull off any special moves to Alex Valle.

lol why are people getting their panties in a twist over this? Every popular game gets traded back in. There are just as many if not more used copies of Wolfenstein, Halo, GTA4, Metal Gear Solid 4 etc. being traded in as SFIV. The game sold in record numbers, so the stuff being traded back is just a small percentage. EVEN if just 1% of SF4 buyers decided to become hardcore and take the game seriously (2.5 million + as of march '09) that’s 25000 hardcore players. And I’m sure the # is higher than 1%.

You can’t assume everyone who traded back is a “halogamer332” either. It could be that some people just didn’t want to play it anymore. You can’t really expect everyone who plays SF4 to aim for the evo finals can you?

The # of tournament attendees speak for themselves, they are going up across the nation for SF4.

^^^ This.

Very well said. The more a game sells, the more it will eventually resale. I’m also a bit confused by the amount of people in this thread mentioning seeing lots of fighting games in the used bins at GS. All I gotta say to that is where??? I very rarely ever see fighters, especially Capcom’s or SNK’s fighters in the used bins.

I recently bought SFIV for the ps3 for $16 sealed on ebay…dayam I’m GDLK.

people want instant gratification. no fighter except games like MK (the fatality thing is the only reason people actually play, there hasn’t been a good one for a very long time) provide this instant gratification as much as a crappy FPS (halo, COD) or an arcade racer. games like SF, mvc2, KOF, quake 3, CS:S are made for people who strive to get better every time they touch the game. games like halo or COD are games which you can pick up and play and rape. games like mvc2 or quake require practice, practice, practice and more practice. honestly i never had to warm up for a game like halo or MK, but for SF or CS:S i have to go into practice mode or go into a deathmatch server just to get in the rhythm of the game and then start actually playing it. any game that you have to practice against a dummy for hours on end automatically scares people. it was so intimidating the first time i played SF4 online. i got my ass kicked so hard so many times, but i kept on practicing my combos, zoning and all that good stuff and after about a month or two i was finally getting the hang of it (and i am still not good even after about half a year). most people can’t wait half a year or more to be good. they need to be able to be able to compete the instant the put the cd/cartridge/quarter/whatever in the game (or console)

I picked it up today from gamefly for 18 bucks damn you got a better deal lol

That’s because most Capcom and SNK fighters don’t sell 2.5 million copies.

You gotta first sell copies to REsell copies.

While I’m glad you are that good, your annecdote is false. MK Fans (while I no doubt argue are many who do) enjoy the fatality/finisher system. Many play for the art of the game (again not arguing many are crappy). While most special moves are made easier allowing more instant gratification, you toss aside nuances found only from learning in one game and seem to defend the nuances in yours (SF). It all depends on who you fight against. I would ask kindly for you to give MKvDCU (despite whatever reasons you have for not liking it) another chance on the technical aspects.

In other thread related things:
I personally, am not that good at fighting games, but I do enjoy them. The trick is to find people who are at the same skill level as you. You guys here are a community of (compared to my level) elite hardcore howthefaxmachinedidhedothat players. Which is great. If you have those skills. I think a better matchmaking system even if it was just based on a W/L record, would help. Though if they could make it based on Time/Match Matches/W-L that would better increase match making. SFIV does look like a fun game. And I loved beating that Japanese reporter at E3 last year on the arcade, but that doesn’t mean I should then do a pelvic thrust at him. Some people online like to really rub it in. Those who lost are aware they lost. But I think this is true for both sides, there are many annoying losers. The worst/best thing to happen to online play was the Xbox360 mic. lol But if Fighters want to fold back into mainstream instead of niche, the community/devs may want to consider some kind of matchmaking for noobs. Build the community by encouraging matches between noobs, guiding them. I don’t know. I tend to ramble.

Anyway, just signed up because I saw the fallacious MK comment. Also, Tekken is a game where I button mashed 8 wins in a row. >.>

Oh lawd…

MKvDC is not a fun game. All of the “kombat” is boring and then there are those falling segments where it just turns into a button mash fest…really fun…you can pick up that game and beat people who have been playing for months because it is so easy. “Technically” it is simple and boring.

Actually a real CS player would tell you CS:S is garbage. I was one of those peeps that went straight to source when it came out, but then I went straight back. I wasn’t playing for money like fighting game players do.

The gap in difference from CS 1.6 to source is almost like the gap of ST/3s to SFIV.

So, using CS:source as your base for an argument would be bad since it suffers from the same “casual” changes like other franchises. I consider these changes bad game design imo. In fact most fps games right now suffer from spray and pray BS.

It was free shipping also.

 where did you pick yours up for 16 and free shipping ?

No doubt that 1.6 is more competitive than CS:S, and no doubt Valve dumbed down quite a few things in CS:S - but even with those changes CS:S is STILL the most competitive team based FPS game on the planet, after 1.6.

CS:S is still a great game with a very high skill ceiling - not as close to perfection as 1.6 was - but still a great game and a great competitive game nevertheless. It’s miles ahead of the really dumbed down consolized games like the recent CoD games. Even the competitive CoD players use pro-mods which emulate gameplay features of CS:S to make it a little less random and a little more competitive.

1 frame links + tough execution + turtling > casual gamer

Well, anywhere you read about competitive gaming in the gamer press, it’s always FPS and MMORPG arena play that’s mentioned. Never fighting games. I guess we are still too “underground”. MTV even has its own league now, “The Frag Arena” which will feature matches from famous CS players and whatnot. You even get “rad tips” from HeatoN, a tourney player who’se won lots of money and sponsorships over the years. Not Street Fighter.

“When I walk around a corner, I try to visualize my enemy at my own head height. That makes headshots alot easier.”

well thanks for the tip, captain obvious

Heh…by the time I get to get on MTV to tell people “Hey bros, pro tip…jump back, walk in then SHORYUKEN” I’ll be dead.
