When I first read the news, I felt bad for the guy.

As time went on, I realized I didn’t really feel bad for him, but was just horrified at the idea of getting fifteen years hard labor for absolutely nothing. Basically, I was putting myself in the shoes of a stranger.

After thinking about it a bit, I realized that he did several things that I wouldn’t have done, even at the age of twenty-one. I’d have never gone to North Korea, I wouldn’t have stolen anything, certainly not for my church group. Wait, doesn’t god want us all to get along and be outstanding citizens? I began to realize that everything about this person was different than the twenty-one year old me that I knew and loved. This guy isn’t that endearing kind of stupid: The stupid that gets you put in the hospital because you were trying to impress some girl or your friends. The stupid that causes you to have someone take pictures of you flexing in public. This is the malicious type of stupid. The stupid that causes people to shoot people in the face point blank with paintball guns or sell other people’s stuff for meth money. This guy’s stupid could hurt people outside his scope of friends. It was so stupid in fact that someone got paid to write an article about it. Were any of us ever THAT stupid?

Fair enough. However, the “causes” today are a joke. It just amounts to a bunch of crybabies whining about privlege or complaining because some group is ostensibly being “victimized”

I’ll say two things here.

The first is about crybabies. Yes, there is an extreme group that pushes every agenda in the name of social justice. The idea for a “safe space” on a college campus where your opinion isn’t challenged it’s coddled is insane to me. Trying to get every letter under the LGBT banner is also quite annoying. However, they still fight for just causes. Income inequality, racism, privilege (this DOES exist!), and so on are legitimate social problems that need to be addressed if we’re ever going to be a country of equals.

The second is privilege specifically. To say it’s just crybabies complaining about it is seeing the tree without taking a look at the forest. Privilege in the white world is a real thing. That privilege leads to social cancers such as nepotism, cronyism, and the like while shutting out others from obtaining that same level of prestige. Privilege starts early, too. From the pre-school you attend, the college that accepts you, to the business connections you have access to. White people, of course, want to bury this because it’s been so good for them. They don’t know the hardships everyone else faces because they’ve been closed out of all these opportunities for so long.

And you might say, “what about poor white people?” Well, poor white people benefit from the government. Just take a read. And they’ve been benefiting for a LOT longer than any other race in the nation. So of course when others ask for the same help those white people feel threatened and say no.

I guess this post is dragging, so I’ll just stop here.

I agree about racism, the other two you mentioned (privilege and income inequality) I’m not so sure about. About income inequality in particular, it seems to me that it goes against some of the basic tenets that the US was founded on. Equal opportunity (if there is not equal opportunity, then that is a separate issue altogether) was promised, not equal outcomes. But what’s worse is that the problem itself is being overstated. Basic economics says that income is not a very good indicator of well being, however, consumption is. If you look at studies on consumption inequality (I can post some if you like) you will find the problem isn’t nearly as pronounced as people make out.

Equal outcomes is one thing, but when you create the game and create the rules to favor you there’s no way to really reach the same exact outcome as a black person. America has had laws on the books giving minorities the short end of the straw for the vast majority of its existence and was only really addressed in the 1960s. Fifty years might sound like a lot but it’s a drop in the bucket to a country that began forming in the 15th Century. Shit, we still have states actively trying to marginalize minorities to keep the white voter base happy and to deprive them compensation they’ve been due because of systemic racism.

You can post those consumption studies if you’d like. I’ll read them. It just won’t change the fact that during the growth of America, minorities were simply blocked by legal measures from reaping in the bounty. Those laws have had disastrous effects in the wealth and connections that minorities could build to pass down to future generations and continue to grow.

As to your comments about privilege, I see what you’re trying to say, but I think you may be missing the point a little. I don’t see the things you mentioned as “white” problems, more as problems of class. When I was attending a private liberal arts college in Pennsylvania (coincidently, this is where I began to hate SJW) we had a pretty diverse population, many people from all different races. However, using a lot of the black students I came to know as an example, none of them came from impoverished backgrounds or from the “ghetto”, they were all very privileged and came from some of the best private schools in the country. It certainly wouldn’t be far fetched to say that they were certainly more privileged and had more opportunity than the “poor white people” you mentioned. In conclusion, the main point I am trying to make is that privilege is more of a class problem than it is a race problem.

Whites have stacked class in the U.S. way in their favor. Poor whites benefit from this because even blacks who go to college have the same chance of getting a job as a white high school dropout. So yes, privilege is still tied to race. You might be a rich black person but in America, you’re still seen black first and rich second with the former severely hindering your chances to continue succeeding.

I don’t doubt that any of that is true, but I do think it is starting to become less relevant. Even in the study you cited they state that a “professional degree gives a black male a 146% larger increase in employment opportunities than his white counterparts”. To me this is certainly suggestive of institional racism become less prevalent. Going forward I still think that any sort of “privilege” one has will be more a function of class than race, and in some parts of the country (the northeast and perhaps the west coast) it already may be the case, idk I’ll need to do some research on that.

I wouldn’t call the east coast racist, but there are more white people in higher positions than minorities. It’s not even close to proportional. And you may be right, going down the line things may even out. But I live in the now, and right now my chances to succeed, as a beaner, are heavily hampered by the system we have.
