Well the problem with your argument is that this was shown in court via surveillance footage. Even using that as an example is idiotic. He committed a crime in a country that is one of the biggest violators of human rights on the face of the earth. Nobody said that the punishment fits the crime. But a prank that is against the law is a crime, so saying that it is ONLY a prank makes you look like a tool. It doesn’t matter that his intent was a prank. Intending for an unlawful act to be harmless doesn’t make it any less illegal.
North Korea don’t even need an excuse to detain an American.
They will manufacturer or even frame you of a crime just to mess with you.
Example scenario:
Oh we just happen to have some poor farming peasant who happen to died, lets blame it on the American and we can ignore any investigation (and not have to look at the real cause).
And we can use this to paint the Americans as lawless barbarians and advance our own political agenda and propaganda engine. Plus they have their scapegoat for their problems.
North Korea tortured and kill that guy as it fits with their political agenda and their anti-western propaganda.
Its less a law enforcement move and more fulfilling their own political agenda.
Outside the US, being an American is actually an liability. Never travel alone, and if you are alone learn how to make friends.
I have traveled the world, trust me when I say people will use and take advantage of you overseas.
Learn up on the cultures, political climate and some language even if it’s just “hello” and “Bathroom”.
Learn whats legal, illegal and all the social taboos. Not knowing the law of the land is no excuse.
All I know is that my natural reaction to this story originally was to laugh.
Natural reaction to his sentencing: laughter (just look at the pictures)
Natural reaction to his death: a slight chuckle, remembering just how retarded this guy was.
heh, sheeeeit… we don’t really need to know specifics on how the laws work in North Korea…because common sense tells us to avoid those places no matter what. There will never, ever be a time in life where I am in North Korea for any reason…just like I have no plans to jump into the enclosures with dangerous big animals at a zoo anytime soon…or smear myself with blood and go swimming in shark infested waters.
A few days ago I found out Otto’s surname literally translates to “warm beer” in German.
So the US government is initiating Otto’s law which is intended to ban the majority of Americans from travelling to North Korea… seriously, lol… Is anyone really planning on traveling to North Korea anytime soon after what happened to this guy?
I think most black people feel sympathy for him but they’re also thinking if he was black the backlash and support for North Korea from a lot of white people would be insane. I could just imagine a 2 hour video from Steffan Molyneux titled “the truth about the black guy who stole and was killed in North Korea, and why he deserved it”.
Why are people so obsessed with race? Black lives matter/all lives matter/blue lives matter are all a load of shit and do nothing to help people get along.
I’ve seen white privilege mentioned a lot in here. White privilege is a load of shit. Money is more likely to pave an easy road for you than your skin color is.
Nah man of course white privilege is a thing i.e. and employer will look at two people with roughly the same qualifications and choose one because his name sounds more ‘white’ than the other or the whole justice system in the us atm.
Do we have real hard evidence that this is a common thing? The only study most seem to refer to is from around 15 years ago and it was conducted only in Chicago and Boston. They sent out around 5,000 resumes with 50/50 white and black sounding names. The results stated that white names got one call back for every 10 applications while black names got one call back for every 15.
I would imagine the study could show different results in 2017. Also including a broader variety of white sounding names could change the results. Would a guy named Vladimir or Boris have the same chance as a guy named Carl or Michael? Including more places than just Boston and Chicago would probably change things up as well as adding a more diverse set of racial sounding names such as Asian and Hispanic.
The justice system is more about money than anything else. There are other influences like if you’re a cop you can pretty much kill anyone as long as you “feared for your life” unless your that Asian cop that got fucked in NYC. Still in most cases money will get you a lot further than your race.
None of what you said is reason enough to make a broad generalization about people based on their skin color.
Affirmative action prevents that from happening. Pretty much tells the employer that he has to hire the guy with the weird sounding name over the white guy if they have the exact same qualifications.
When my family went to Nigeria to lay my father to rest…the officials held us and other Nigerians up through the night looking through our belongings and trying to bribe us.
Meanwhile EVERY white person I saw that landed with and after us there were able to go through no problem, they weren’t even bribed to.
Even one of my uncles, who is close friends with the mayor of Port Harcourt was held up by officials.
None of those white people got hassled like we did.
