In the end, his parents are still making excuses for him, but itâs not like they can be expected to do anything else, especially since people tend not to speak ill of the dead even when they arenât (so closely) related to them. So we might as well let them grieve unless they start spouting bullshit that he was totally innocent even if the punishment by no means fit the âcrimeâ; unless, of course, he was actually innocent, but then it seems weird that he would be singled out, even for North Koreaâitâs possible though I guess.
I am only surprised that his death didnât happen sooner given it sounded like he was effectively braindead as soon as details about his condition were reported after he was medically evacuated likely a year too late for it to do any good, especially given North Koreaâs low level of technology and blatant disdain for life in general. Anyone who thought he would actually recover was basically deluding themselves almost as hard as his parents were.
That said, I canât say that I feel the planet is bereft of his existence if he actually did what he did. Even if the punishment was draconian, torture aside, he really did do it to himself even though it was completely avoidable. Even foregoing the sage advice of âdonât visit North Korea, you idiotsâ, he apparently took down the propaganda poster the day before he was scheduled to leave. So, really, he was already effectively braindead even before he probably got tortured into physically matching that state.

Then you can effectively wait forever since China isnât going to do shit until after itâs too late most likely. Until then, China is more or less totally fine with North Korea making the region so unstable since it benefits them in several ways, including being able to leverage being the (faux) mediator to North Korea despite the fact that the latest despotic Kim has been publicly anti-China for at least the past couple of years.
