uriens two biggest weaknesses is hes easy to put pressure onto (no meter effecient, safe or reliable way to get yourself out of rushdown) and he has no good way to land damage outside of high risk moves or spending meter. the second part is actually incredibly relevant to his first weakness because to get that damage he requires momentum, he can’t just get a good, well timed poke off. if he had a faster, safer knockdown or some sort of momentum turning move he’d be a LOT better (you’ll notice his only good knockdowns are off headbutt, sweep and throw and all but throw are notoriously slow startup and sweep is unsafe in a lot of situations).
oh and urien has damage off lows, its just unconventional.
urien players are f*cking God tier like when they are really good with him, one mistake and you lose 2.5/5 of your life.
I cant even jump againts urien, thats where he gets his biggest combo and momentum, if get anti aired by his upper fireball thing im done. The fact that i cant jump againts him makes fighting him already hard.
i always try to get close to him and pressure, but as soon as i make a mistake…there no turning back, unless im really really REALLY LUCKY!!!
try not jumping. jumping is hardly ever good unless your’e baiting a paryy?
epsilon has said it before urien dies to getting rushed. you have to be careful and wait for bar but there is nothing like rushing someone down with urien at the start of a match when most sit back and build bar. urien’s mk is your best friend to get someone to stay at a safe distance. his mp is good for when they get close. his lp is very underrated as well when your in throw range. instead of throwing lp, lp then go into cr mk. it works so good as a mixup.
The only good time to jump against Urien is when he is on the floor, or when he does an attack which misses leaving a good opening also when he is in the air as well…
His overhead fierce can be parry’d on reaction, I’d use this in mind games more, but these days I’m making it more occasional or putting a aegis right in front of someone in the corner and using it to mind game, learned from my friend Ryan how useful this actually is. It gives you a good chance at beefy damage, gains meter in the process, and makes your opponent struggle. The worst part about Urien I find is how he is pressured. Characters like Mak, Gouki and Ibuki can do a good number on him, but if a good Urien knows his range poking, he can be safer then the guy who doesn’t. That fight is always a bitch though.
I think people underestimate how solid Makoto is vs Urien, I find this to be one of his absolute worst match ups, cause she has good air priority, and her cRH if used correctly can stuff the shit out of your options. Her game is incredibly fast and random, and you are never truly safe in your guard. Her dash up Karakusa doesn’t help matters and I find sFP and cMK to be good Mak stopppers, as someone else said, know your range.
I also think Urien is weak against Ibuki when cornered, and anyone else with block strings that move them miles outside of range.
Also prepare to parry a lot vs Ibuki. You become the ‘Hugo’ target in this match at times.
