After changing from Ken to Urien, I went to my local arcade to play some games. Most of the players there are pretty sucky, and they use Ken/Akuma, and some Ryus. Theres a Q, few Dudleys, and few Makotos. I have my strategy vs shotos fine, but my friend (who got me into 3s, also plays Urien) showed up and I had no idea what to do. Any advice on how the game should be?
My normal tactic is to run away, build meter and pressure the enemy with random fireballs, tackles, headbut throws, etc. Until I get meter for an unblockable. The other Urien might have the same strategy, ending up in a weird game.
What does the game basically come down to? Is it normals, or just mind tricks? I haven’t been playing 3s for that long, and I’ve been playing Ken for a couple of months, started Urien like 2 weeks ago.
From the vid, it seems like you should just play your game, but try to avoid the types of mistakes that can lead to big damage for your opponent, such as random tackles, whiffed throws, failing to quick recover often, etc. One thing I found interesting was that c.Hp can beat a lp HB! This seems pretty cool in that the old walk a few steps back then d, c.Hp move can connect if the other Urien throws or does a lp hb. And, if he goes low you might get a lucky parry in as well. Ofcourse, if it’s blocked you can cancel into lp ( )xxhp Aegis, c.hk or f+hp.
Those are just my thoughts. I don’t play many Uriens at all (stuck on new type  ).
Its sad how new type ruins alot of Urien’s offensive options. Apparently my arcade is new type, but the people dont know how to block unblockables, if you know what I mean (tried on myself on the xbox, you have to block away from urien). I’ve also learned the other aegis setups which almost guarentees a juggle combo.
I guess that if I’m just supposed to play my game, then theres nothing to worry about. Because I’m new to Urien I dont know which moves can be punished with c.fierce etc. Only time will tell.
(Haven’t gotten to watch the video yet, I have a horrible connection to combovideos)
U can’t block a unblockable!lol. U can learn how to parryout of the setups tho.Which sucks. If u couldn’t parry the unblockables, i think urien would be high tier. The good thing is, it’s hard to parry the unblockables setups. The bad news is, people are learning how to parry the “unblockables” setups. That’s why in very high level play, u can’t depend on urien unblockables all the time.I think it’s ok to do it some times or when u know your foe doesn’t know how to parry the unblockables setups.
So, my advice is,learn how to parry out of the unblockables setups and learn how to do his high damaging combos that doesn’t involve his unblockables.
Note:I’m not saying don’t learn his unblockables.I’m just saying learn his high damaging combo (first) that u know would work 100% of the time.
Edit:if people do try and parry your unblockable set ups u can throw them.Review that video if u haven’t, good shit in there.
We were both referring to the New-Type Arcade machines on which unblockables do not work. It’s true that many people have learned how to parry out of the UBs, but it’s still not easy to do in a match. The opponent still has to guess if you’re going to try to guard break high or low. And as you mentioned, you can wait and let the opponent start parrying before you guard break or throw them. I think Emphy is a perfect example of a player who really varies the ways in which he executes his UBs. Overall, I see them working a high percentage of the time in FFA and KSK ranbats, and those guys are pretty good.
It’s very hard for Urien to win vs another Urien if he doesn’t get as much bar. So, this matchup is really about basics. Whoever has the better basics will outpoke and corner the opponent, get bar first and cast aegis, score even more hits off of aegis, etc. If your basics aren’t as good, you will see the difference.
