Hugo has some possibilities, but it is ultimately down to the player. Its no Good matchup, imo. Once urien presses the issue with aegis , hugo has to have 100% defense and has few opportunities to deal damage/stop the attack. Even if you are in footsie range urien outranges hugo. The big man has alot of hp though, and its big damage moves can create comebacks if urien is not careful!
urien’s only advantage in a poking war is his walk speed and dash.
hugo out ranges urien.
idk man urien stand mk and stand hk would own out hugos far choices if Urien didn’t have to block.
In terms of footsies, Hugo puts up a pretty good fight. I wouldn’t say “outrange”, though. Urien can lame him out pretty well until he goes for Aegis stuff. If Hugo can get in then that’s great, but it’s a rough road to get there.
Huh? You can’t just say in terms of footsies and call that a fight. What threat has relegated action to footsies?
Also, in regards to the video posted. Was that commentator on the left Tomo Fujita?!
I guess I’ll add my 2 cents. Umm… against Hugo use Uriens air fireball more, but just use it as another basic poking tool. Hugo is a big guy and Uriens air fireball will annoy him. Of course, you have to be mindful of the range you do it from. You don’t wanna do it if Hugo is close enough to cr.mk you. Because he will. That and like sidewinder said, Stop spending all your meter on ex headbutts. You should really only use ex headbutt if the extra damage from it will kill. Otherwise, you coulda spent the meter on aegis set-ups. My gamer tag is ourTwoism.
Against Ibuki:
This match can be a total nightmare for Urien. There’s lots of reasons for this. Number 1, she can dash through aegis set-ups. Number 2, since Urien is a big guy like Hugo she can pressure him with block strings that are guaranteed to give you a headache. Number 3, for some reason ibuki players seem to be characteristically very good at parrying. She will pressure you, she will parry you, and she will escape your aegis set-ups. I don’t really have any good advice other than try to block as best you can, try to throw tech as best you can, look for an opening to capitalize with a st.FP and try to parry ibuki’s slow overheads, then punish as hard as you possibly can.
Against Yun:
To win this fight you’ll have to pull out every sneaky, dirty little trick you have. Like for instance, say you have him in the corner, and you land a cr.FP xx Tackle xx st.MP RESET, then cancel into medium aegis (so it spawns just outside the screen behind him) then dash up throw, and by now the aegis should be on top of him. Urien can play a nice game of keep-away against most other characters but it’s pointless against yun when he’ll just build meter for genei-jin. What you really, really want is to be able to parry a dive kick then punish. But beware, good yuns will mix up the angle of their divekicks so that the divekick won’t actually hit you, they’ll just land in front of you and then throw you. Or worse, command throw you. If you can land Tackle xx Tackle xx headbutt in the corner on a yun it really helps just because the meter it gives you is simply invaluable. Your execution has to be flawless, and you have to be very sneaky.
Can’t believe I forgot to add the following. There are two really beautiful set-ups you can add to your repertoire. The first works only on Hugo, the second works on Hugo, Makoto, and Alex.
1’st set-up (Hugo only):
You need to have him in the corner. NOW, the unblockable set-up is as follows : land a cr.FP, short Tackle, cr.FP, short Tackle xx jab Aegis, then do roundhouse Knee Drop, Then do another roundhouse Knee drop to create the unblockable. The hardest part about this set up is landing the cr.FP AFTER the short Tackle. You might be wondering “How in the fuck does that work???.. you can land a cr.FP after a short Tackle???” after you land the first cr.FP you have to walk forward for like… half a second then immediately hit kick button for the tackle to come out. Essentially what happens is that by having Urien walk forward for that half a second, it causes Urien to end up being closer to Hugo after the Tackle has finished. So close enough in fact that you can land another cr.FP. Make sure you use short tackle and not medium. Medium has a slightly longer start up.
2’nd set-up (Hugo, Alex, Makoto):
Out of all the unblockable set-ups this is my absolute favorite. You can do this from midscreen too. Once again, you need to land a cr.FP, then jab headbutt, IMMEDIATELY upon landing jab aegis reflector, roundhouse Knee drop, NOW… Here’s why this is my favorite set-up. If they don’t roll, then you’ve got them in an unblockable. HOWEVER, if they do roll, then here’s what happens : they roll, right at the end of their roll they’ll get hit by the reflector, IMMEDIATELY cr.lk, [they bounce off the reflector], cr.mk, [they bounce off the reflector], cr.jab jab, [they bounce off the reflector], cr.mk, [they bounce off the reflector], cr.jab jab, [they bounce off the reflector], cr.FP, Tackle. I REALLY suspect that a lot of the times people choose not to roll simply so as not to give you the satisfaction of landing such an awesome combo (Just my personal opinion.)
This set-up is kind of difficult for a few reasons:
reason no.1:
After the first headbutt, you have to summon the reflector IMMEDIATELY upon landing and I mean IMMEDIATELY, otherwise they will be able to roll out of it. This can be hard to pull off online sometimes.
reason no.2 :
Those first few hits, the cr.lk, then cr.mk have to be timed pretty perfectly. You have to hit cr.mk IMMEDIATELY after the cr.lk. Honestly… ALL of the inputs for this whole sequence have to be timed pretty perfectly.
reason no.3:
If you use this on Hugo, and Hugo has SA1, there is a real possibility that he may roll, he’ll get hit by the reflector, but then immediately he’ll go into SA1, and boom you’re dead. I don’t know if this is because I timed my inputs wrong, or if it’s because this is not a TRUE combo. I even think there have been a few times where Hugo rolled but for some reason didn’t get hit by the reflector, he used SA1 and boom I was dead. Same thing goes for Makoto with her SA1.
There ya go. Two indispensable set-ups.
Thanks for the tips twoism, appreciate it a lot. Another combo I’ve found that works pretty well against Hugo is J. RH>cr jab>jab headbutt>ex aegis>RH tackle>Forward tackle
pretty decent damage on that, don’t recall whether or not hugo needs to be in the corner for the mk tackle to land, have to verify. Idk I tend to throw out ex headbutt as a knee jerk reaction to catch jumps, especially in the corner you’d be surprised how often people get hit by it. one of those bad habits I picked up while playing online for so long i guess
