Urban Reign Thread- it's pretty good

I don’t suppose anyone has any vids? I don’t mean gamespot preview vids, I wanna see stuff from people who know what they’re doing.

I don’t understand so UR is a good fighter but a shitty BEU am I rite? But then why not just play Tekken 5 instead “a better fighter”?

BEUs are fun easy to get into co op action adventure fighters with roaming and somtimes enviromental variables… you don’t need stress in a game like this…

I understand fighters are difficult on 8 star but I just play on normal setting or even lower them if I feel the need… = enjoyable relaxed experience

UR sounds too stressful and technical but I’ll rent it first…

A nice movie that really breaks the game down for you. If you want to know what this game is about, check it out. The vid gives the game a 7.5, which is the first truly fair review I’ve seen, in my view.

And, for those who already have the game and like it, I’d recommend spreading the word about it. Maybe we’ll get a sequel which would fix whatever some people are complaining about.

Actually, to give credit to the original site, the video comes from GameTrailers.com

Wow, I’m sold on this after seeing that vid. But where is it at? EB doesn’t have it and it takes them 5 minutes even to find it in the computer with the response “It’s not out yet.”

What this looks like to me is an Arcade Die hard style game that went straight to consoles instead, hence the generi-story AND difficulty (to crunch quarters).

I had plan on getting UR “later” but after watching that vid I might pick it up sooner. The vid made the gameplay engine out to be great, multiplayer fighter wise. Seems like Namco should have just ditched trying to market this as a next gen BEU but more of a killer multiplayer fighter.

Here are some more vids (A combo video has been the recent addition), I only watched the 10 Man Challenge on Very Hard so far. Any experience UR players care to shed some light on how good these vids are?

I dunno, I saw it on ebworld.com…and you could probably ask your local store to get it special order. But, don’t get it from Best Buy. The one near me was selling it for $50, when it should only be $40.

It is kinda like Die Hard, in that you are place in closed environments, facing off against 4 or 5 enemies with weapons sometimes lying around. But, Urban Reign’s fighting system is much deeper. However, there’s no co-op 2-player mode.

But, challenge mode is co-op.

Combos in UR are a little different from other fighting games. You can escape juggles by pressing dodge at the right time (not quite just frame timing, but definitely not mash timing). But, while you’re escaping juggles, you can be air grabbed (which you can also escape with correct timing of the dodge button).

However, you can’t escape super moves. So, if you’re being juggled by a super move, you’re outta luck, and it becomes TRUE combo (unescapable). So, if you want guaranteed combo damage after you launch someone, go straight into a super move. If you think your opponent isn’t good enough to air escape your normal juggle, then you can risk a few normal hits THEN go into a super or air grab.

So, in those videos, when you see a juggle with a normal moves, keep in mind that it is possible to escape them. So, it’s a matter of risk/reward and mind games.

You just have to play around with the system for a while, and see how it works. It’s pretty intricate…

why isnt this in GD? SK get off your fatass and get to lockin!)beatdown was moved

This game is nothing like Beatdown. If Smash Bros. gets a fighting game thread, UR is more than worthy, too.

You can escape super moves but only with super moves. Watch the 10 man fight challenge from The Hand vs. Eye link that was given in this thread (a few posts up above). The CPU does it on Brad all of the time. Don’t know about supering out of juggles when your hit by a super though. Somebody would have to lend me a PS2 to figure out that one.

Yeah, sorry if I was unclear…I meant if you’re being juggled in the AIR, you can’t escape from a super. If you’re getting hit on the GROUND by a super, you can escape with your own super (if you have meter).

Of course, if you’re escaping a super with a super, you have to make sure either a) you break out at the right time(usually the very end), or b) use a super that’s long enough to “eat” their super (i.e. outlast the opponent’s super). Sometimes, it’s in your best interest just to take the damage and conserve your meter, because the most useful supers require the most meter.

Gotta think while you fight in this game…

Yes than your right.

So it seems that this game blows down to is mainly meter management since you make hardly any damage outside of supers. You need to be able to converse your meter in order to land some decent or critical damage, and yet you need to be able to defend yourself from receiving that kind of damage. Also, you need to be able to utilitize dodging in order to avoid damage when you do not have meter (excluding supers because you can’t dodge a super), and use dodging to build your meter while decreasing your opponents meter.

Seems like a simple game with some depth. Definitely in the right step for a Powerstone-quese game.

BTW dude, there’s no FAQ for this game at gamefaqs. Better you to write it then them.

this game’s sweet man
i rented this game as well as The Warriors
i like this game much more
The Warriors is a piece of crap in my opinion
-shitty graphics
-shitty colors
-very shitty fighting system

Urban Reign is the best beat em up game i’ve ever played
It’s not even comparable to PowerStone, they’re completely different games

PICK IT UP
7.7/10

I mispelled the suffix that I attached to Powerstone, but what I was trying to say from that post was that UR is similar to Powerstone, which it is since they are both true, free 3D fighters. Obviously both games play totally different, and is what I never intended to say.

so I played Urban reign today till 4 am.

really fucking fun game.

got to level 50 in one day though with my buds…didnt play multiplayer mode yet…but story was enough to test out all the techs, supers, grabs, and double teams.

from what i got the chance to play,
8/10…critics didnt explore the game enough.

I’m glad you liked it…

I think it’s a good game for those who know what it’s about ahead of time, and for those who play it long enough to get the system. Multiplayer is where the long term enjoyment will be found. Although 1P mode can be enjoyable, too (brawling side by side with a CPU partner in a horribly outnumbered suicide mission can be pretty fun every once in a while…especially when you and your partner finally win).

By the way, any Soul Calibur 3 owners…I think there’s an Urban Reign demo on the demo disc included with SC3. I can’t remember whether it’s a playable demo or just a video…

Either way, I’d check it out.

Urban Reign is hot when it comes to multiplayer but the other modes are wothless. The Story mode isn’t horrible but it’s not that good neither. I thought it was gonna be more like Beat Down where you have free roaming ability to get from place to place, but it’s just mission after mission of ridiculos, impossible to pull off for a human moves. I beat it in 2 days and the last boss was really a waste of a mission. I hit him once and he died…this reminds me of Batman Begins where they introduced villian like The Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul but the end Batman ended up fighting some old guy.

I got this for Xmas out of the fricking blue (how the hell did anyone know I even wanted it), and I can’t put it down.

I love giving the solid beat down, but I also love when you get out of position fighting 2-3 guys and they just go to town on your juggled ass. It’s amazing to watch. Also the AI is so situational, when it’s a mess of guys against one they are agressive at all times, but when the numbers dwindle they start dodging and a lot more defensive.

Why is this so addicting?

In addition to the code for 2-player co-op in Story and Free modes (at title screen L1, R2, O, O, triangle, L2, R1, O, triangle, O) here are some other codes for Urban Reign.

Courtesy of the Gamespot UR forum:

But, now that a second player can help you out in Story mode, it might be more fun to unlock all these things manually (i.e. play through Story mode).

There’s also a FAQ at gamefaqs…somebody had asked about one earlier…apparently someone heard you.

Enjoy!

This thread and videos from gametrailers sold me on the game. I’m going to pick this up soon. I’m glad I kept researching instead of going off the harsh reviews on other sites.

Plus, the game is really cheap now too lol.
