Urban Reign Thread- it's pretty good

Edit: 2-player co-op mode has been found! Go to page 3 of this thread for the code.

Searched and didn’t see a thread devoted to this game…so here.

I’ve been reading the reviews online for this game, and they’ve been really harsh. They seem to complaiin that a) there’s not much to do besides fighting, and b) it’s really cheap (unfair).

I think it’s pretty ridiculous to criticize a FIGHTING GAME for being all about FIGHTING. You don’t give Madden games a 6 out of 10, becuase there’s “too much football”.

And, as far as being too cheap/hard, I personally welcome the old-school, controller tossing challenge. I think people on this forum can handle cheap games (Gill? Ignitz? Umm, yeah). After all, this is a tribute to the beat-em-up classics, isn’t it? Nothing fair about Shiva in SoR2…

Personally, I think the game is really good, for what it is…a beat-em-up. 1-player mode will last you a while, and multiplayer has the potential of being really entertaining…like Super Smash Brothers, but with knives and pipes, and Stone Cold Stunners (WWE fans will be quite pleased finding all the random finishers that Namco aped).

Plus, the fighting engine actually has depth to it, if you give it a chance. Plus it’s $40 as opposed to the usual $50.

I dunno…anyone else play it yet?

the 1p game is shit imo, its just a bunch of random tasks that are basically the mp game with time limits and the like.

a big letdown considering i thought it was going to be a roaming beatem up ala spikeout.

the fighting is pretty good but nowhere near the depth of your average 2d fighter… more like powerstone or something.

Well, I guess that if the roaming is important to you, then you’re right. You will be disappointed. You don’t walk through long stages encountering enemies in Urban. The emphasis is more on the fighting, as I said earlier. Beatdown might be more your thing (if you can stand the loading times and sub-par fighting).

Well, no, it’s not like Third Strike or anything like that. But, Final Fight was no Third Strike, either. Streets of Rage was no Third Strike. It’s a different type of fighting game.

To me, this is deeper than Power Stone. Power Stone doesn’t have a stable combo system like UR…or team moves…or the reversal system that requires perfect timing…or strategic super move use. In PS you do a super, and your opponent is screwed, no matter where they are or what they do. In UR, supers aren’t all powerful…nothing is. Everything is either counter-able or avoidable.

In my view, UR just seems more stable and reliable than Power Stone, which can be totally crazy at times. (Not that PS doesn’t have ANY strategy…it does).

But, either way, my point is that UR didn’t deserved a 6 out of 10 or worse. This isn’t some crappily made game that Namco threw together. You can tell that they put thought in the system, the story, the animation, etc.

That’s what I’m sayin’…

I dunno what you guys are talking about, a friend of mine has had it for a little over a week, and has already found tech traps, death combos, infinites and infinite resets with multiple characters.

I’ve played it and true enough at first glance it’s hella cheap, but when you fully get into the system, it becomes more broken than MvC2 + T5 put together.

what system is it out for?

Ps2

funny, this reminds me of my Beatdown:FOV thread…

Infinites? Shed some light on this… I haven’t found any true infinites at all…

If you keep the SPA meter to normal build, not fast, I don’t see how there can be infinites. But then again I haven’t played it that much. Even then, when getting hit by moves that seem to be infinite… you can do 2+4(super attack) to get out of them…

Also regarding the game. I really enjoy playing a 4 player battle or battling with other people… it reminds me of playing wrestling games on the N64 with a mix Tobal and of other fighting games.

Spike-Out > Urban Reign > Beatdown (shudders)

Honestly, I’ve been thinking about picking this game up - one reason being character designs, which seem fairly good.

I’m a sucker for character designs.

The other is it DOES seem like a pretty good beat-em-up. I wanna hear more!

Yeah it’s pretty good up to about mission 20 on normal, and then the AI gets a little ridiculous. By ridiculous I mean ridiculous.

Not to mention how once you start doing the “protect” missions your AI controlled partner seems to play punching bag while you get you’re ass handed to you trying to take everyone on.

I stopped around mission 53, I just about reached my breaking point after that Eddy Gordo-esque “Chris” fag.

But yes, elaborate on these infinite and 100% combos? I’ve only managed to get 12-15 hits with the chick in blue before I either get swamped or fuck something up.

Just mix it up: Like hit strike twice then throw or sweep or high. Mashing Strikes button is asking for counter. Also, sweep and mount works well too. A sucessful mount will build up your super nicely.

Well, that or play the game on easy.

thats not entirely true you can avoid speacials if your good enough, you can dodge combo’s dbz style aswell

there is a strategy in powerstone

I’ll have to get my homeboy to come to the thread and post up the combos and whatnot.

It’s an ok game if u use the extremely broken characters coughPAULPHOENIXMARSHALLAWcough

with the exception of juggling supers, there are no true infinites, or even true combos as far as i know. everything can be parried out of during hit stun, including juggles. if such a thing as high level urban reign ever develops, the best players will be the ones who will be able to parry their way out of any combo/juggle, or master several different combos which require different timings to parry out of

in addition, parrying gives you a large chunk of meter, in addition to taking a large chunk of meter away from your opponent. this is huge because this game is VERY meter-based

the winner of a match is generally who has more meter more often. supers can’t be parried and can be done at any time, even during hit stun from another super. they’re also completely invincible all the way until they’re done (with the exception of the power up supers, which have about 1 second’s worth of invul)

  • getting hit by a combo you’re having trouble parrying out of? super them.
  • about to get hit by something during the recovery of your move? super them.
  • getting hit by a super on the ground? super them.
  • need guaranteed damage after a launcher? super them.

what will happen a lot in matches is somebody will land a combo, which the other guy will combo-break with a super. while getting hit by the super, the first guy will do a super of his own to hit the other guy when his super is over. the second guy will prevent this by cancelling his first super into a second super… and so on until one person runs out of meter

in addition, almost all the power up supers are way too good, especially the super armor and auto-counter supers. super armor is particularly over powered in that it’s basically the only thing in the game that counters supers. the only thing that counters super armor is a throw, and that’s risky business considering somebody with super armor is probably going to be attacking you

auto counters are also cheap in that they make you pretty much invincible as long as you aren’t attacking. the only way to damage a auto-countered player is to super them (you can’t parry supers). in addition, every time an auto counter character parrys something or automatically breaks a throw, they get chunks of meter while you lose yours… giving them enough meter to activate it again…

anyway, it’s kind of dumb, but it can be a fun game. there’s some fun combos (that are escapable) to be found

This game sounds retarded. All those Beatdown reviews and threads were absolutely hilarious though. Anybody have a link to a review talking about this game?

They slammed beatdown?

Please. . gimmie quotes lmao

No there are true combos.

I’ll give you an easy one. With Alex. Now to understand this you have to realize that after you perform a deflection or super your open to attack for a split sec.

Up + attack x 8. This does about 80%. If you try to super deflect out of the combo at any point his stunner air throw is guaranteed. Since it will grab you out of the deflection animation and you cant deflect again while your character is in the animation. The stunner will stun your character and pressing L2 will force them to get up. You can break throws while your stunned but you cant parry or reverse attacks. So he can proceed to launch you again to restart the combo process. The only way out would be to perform a super to break the stun. In which case you can wait for the super animation to finish and then start the combo again. Even if you mess up the relaunch portion and the regular combo followed by the air grab if someone deflects is all guaranteed damage and over half life. Note the combo also breaks the head and for the rest of the match makes whoever your facing take extra damage anyway.

Another true combo is with parks, up+attack, attack x 2, f+spa. If you missed a deflection and get launched it takes a sec before the game will let you attempt another deflection so the attack x2 after the launcher is guaranteed and you cant deflect spa attacks and his spa is an air combo so you cant deflect it. Meaning if you get launched its a guaranteed 45-60% combo depending on if your body is messed up.

Super armour isnt that bad since most people that have it have very slow attacks that are easy to parry. Deflecting any attack then throw is pretty easy. Doing this twice will usually run out then armour time. Even if they break the throw just make sure you use a throw that when broken doesnt get you thrown.

And auto counter doesnt last that long. Some actually give out early then other characters. Just go on the defensive when someone activates if you deflect one of there attacks you cut off the auto counter time by like 2 sec’s.

ugh this game is terrible.

timestop has it right:

spikeout>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>urban reign>>>>>beatdown.

this games levels are nothing more than you in a square (some big some small) fighting 1-5 guys. occasionally there is some criteria like a time limit but apart from the frustrating ai (it sometimes juggles you forever) and the frustrating system (sometimes you stay stunned for almost a minute) it just sucks.

sure there are ways around the above but they are not easily avoided and contribute heavily to this game being CRAP if you ask me.

I’m convinced that there is no real strategy involved in this game.
