Upcoming tournaments, Super Turbo is back!

Is there any interest in a tournament in Toronto? I’ve been discussing the prospect of one with the local ST heads and they said they’ve tried many times and can’t get enough interest from non-local communities except maybe MTL, who’s community has dwindled as well…

We’ve got the go ahead for Toryuken, if there is enough interest I thought there might be a better chance of getting non-local players because of evo points at Toryuken. But after thinking about it more today I think our best chance is if there will be a tournament of legends 2, you add a Qualifier in T.O. I think that would be great for the community i’m trying to revive here.

I don’t know how much more difficult it would make the lives of the T.Os to do something like this. But if it isn’t much more hassle than a regular side, I don’t see why not. Personally I’m thinking Toryuken or the T series in Toronto. and like i said, If there isn’t much more hassle than a regular side, for sure we can get them to agree.

Just a reminder, that we already got the o.k for toryuken if there’s enough interest.

Don’t bother. After running ST here from 2006-2010, there is literally no interest here.

I got that from what you told me yesterday, but it doesn’t hurt to try. You’ve seen the random GGPO and HDR people come out at A&C…

You don’t even think if we manage to be a qualifier for something like Tournament of Legends we can get people?

I understand what you’re saying but I’m gonna dissect on this one, I’m gonna put some facts of the GTA/TO scene on ST:

-I’ve been running ST/HDR casuals from 2006-2010 and NOBODY took advantage of this. Only the regulars showed up (JED, Fareed, Dogberry, WB!).
-I still managed to get top US players (David Spence, Brian Feldstein and Nohoho) to come over as they were in town visiting and it still made no difference
-even having heard stories of the scene from Dogberry (I came in 2005 where we had the HSF2AE board that year), nobody cared about this game as players were always focused on the big 3 (CvS2/MvC2/3S)
-no local tournament has managed to draw 12+ people, even in $1 entry
-no T tournament has managed to draw 16+ people and it was always relegated to $5 entry
-because of this, ST tourneys were ran about once a year until 2006
-all the times ST was ran at a T tournament, it was always a different version (Arcade, PS2 CCC2, DC and FinalBurn)
-most people who entered were all CvS2 pot monsters where their view of ST was “if you can beast in CvS2, you can beast in ST too!”
-running a tournament, even in $5 entry is still enough to scare off people

All of this gives me the understanding that the GTA/TO scene is very new-school minded and knows this game just has zero support here. HDR had a nice 8 months in 2009. I love this game so much but these are the facts and it’s just the way it is.

Now getting on Toryuken:
I’ve already pitched the idea to NeoRusell on this and if we run this at Toryuken, we need a CRT (which will not be provided by TTT staff), still must charge the players the full venue fee (I tried to work something out but it can’t be done and the venue fee is $35 onsite), provide people with sticks (PS2), must be run on Sunday however we’re free to do whatever we want in terms of rules, entry, pay-off, etc…

I have a plan in mind.

Unfortunately, it’s too late to talk about a ToL qualifier for this year. But I think we would love to have a qualifier on Canadian soil as well as some more countries if we can do this again next year. Maybe this is a challenge for the Canadian community to show up and support a ST tournament at Toryuken so we have to include it, if we’re able to do a ToL 2!

Actually that’s very helpful to know. Gives me a better understanding of the situation we’re in. I still don’t think it’s hopeless. You’ve only been there for two A&C gatherings and one at heroes’ world. I think HW is possibly a bit far for people downtown to come up, especially since even the venue fee is a bit more.

But before I made the post, I’ve brought my supergun down to A&C during off nights. I think if we stick at A&C you’ll see that actually more than the regulars are showing up (who’s WB?). Casuals used to be at your place right? It’s now in a bit more public place, with other games around so people don’t have to be there just for ST. which I think makes it a bit easier with a game that’s not as popular right now. The big 3 are now pretty much gone and replaced with the newer post-2009 games (not sure if this is a good or bad thing… but it’s different) and maybe we can somehow use it to our advantage.

If we havn’t got 12 people @ $1 or 16 people at $5 it should be our first goal. Maybe not to try and get the old people back into the game, but to get new people who wern’t around when ST was big. For that I think we just need to be a just bit more vocal about our meetings, and now that I think about it, I’ll try to be more vocal about your placings at majors. We have a top player here in our backyard yet you’re relatively unknown. I think we need to change that. hopefully skullgirls will feel more oldschool and we can get some fans of that game over to ST as well.

I haven’t given up just yet, and I think we can certainly get a decent following for ST at least for casuals before ToL2 if it happens. And a ToL2 qualifier may just be that extra push that we need to get word out for the new-schoolers in our community. Or somehow convince the streams to stream some ST casuals inbetween matches. There are a lot of things to fight, but I think the main one is exposure at this point. Much of the influx of new players have never touched ST, and simply need to know that it exists before even deciding whether to play it or not.

that’s more like it.

WB! is one of the venerable ancients from Hamilton who have since retired.

As long as we set some realistic expectations for turnouts and such, we can keep things positive.

its a long shot, but to all people in the lower mainland of British Columbia, there will be a Super Turbo tournament tomorrow in Vancouver (well…Burnaby technically). Sorry for the short notice, if there is any interest, I will post the details.

Should be pretty alright, there is a actually a good handful of us who know how to play the game with some pretty good character diversity

Hey guys. Just reminding you that we’ve got a streamed tournament for ST over here at Super Arcade. Any locals out there should definitely drop on by and get some games in with us. The stream should be up and running around 4pm or 4:30pm at the link below:

The tournament should be started around 4pm. Be sure to join the stream at that time.

Another streamed tournament for ST being held at Super Arcade, tonight, at 8pm. Hope to see some of you guys at the arcade, and in the chat rooms!

xmania europe 2 is now live streamed by swga_maho on twitch tv. With players such as kusumondo komoda and Yaya Damdai and many european top players.

PS. I know there is a topic but my browser says there is malware in the thread. Don’t know of the stream was posted.

Yeah, I have the same warning on my google Chrome. It says it has malicious content from kumite.fr? Not sure if it’s confirmed or not, but I’d rather not go to that thread to pick up some random European trojan-horse.

Hey guys we’re moving Season’s Beatings to our hometown this year - Cleveland, OH. ST has always been a staple at our tournament and is one of our all-time favorite games. We’re doing $20 entry fee instead of the high rollers $50 like last year. ST will be played on candy cabs for the tournament as always, and we’ll have a couple superguns on hand for casual play. Check out the thread, hope you can make it!

Update: I’ve moved the SF2 calendar over to the STR site (actually this occurred a while back). But for those of you who were keeping up with it, I haven’t updated it for a while because I was in post-EVO/ToL burnout. But I’ve added a bunch of tournaments on the calendar now. If there are more tournaments that you know of, please let me know.

Hey dudes,

Us Western Canadians are having an ST tournament at one of our local arcades here in Vancouver.

There will be both an HF and ST tournaments, with lots of old pros coming out of the wood works to play.

If you are in the Northwest US/BC canada area, let me know via PM and I will send you the details!

The finest of details are still being worked out (we are trying to find a date that best accommodates the majority of players)

It will be fun and good and stuff.

This tournament happened tonight! It was really sick, around 15 for both ST and HF. Will upload footage soon. I don’t know who won HF, but for ST:

David Finnie (Lance Michaels) got first with Balrog
KT (a player from Japan) got second with DJ
Kentaro (another Japanese player) got third w/ Chun
I got fourth with Honda
TOD got 5th with DJ

Event Opening Time: Saturday 13th 11:00-19:00 - Sunday 14th 10:00-18:00

Attention fight fans! Grand Master Challenge will be presenting the whole Super Street Fighter II Turbo experience at Play Expo. On Saturday GMC will be running two tournaments with free entry, both using revisions of the original SSF2T.

At 14:00 there will be a 16-player knockout on SSF2T HD Remix on the XBOX 360. Then at 16:00 another tournament will take place on the arcade game Hyper Street Fighter II, which allows players to select any character from the series.

On Sunday comes the main event – Super Street Fighter II X (Arcade). This tournament has a £5 entry fee and will be run in Double Elimination style, with cash prizes for the top 3 competitors. Players are already confirmed from around the UK, making this one of the toughest tournaments of the year. The winner of this will be surely be able to make the claim of being the Grand Master of SSF2T!

Saturday is designed to be more of a casual day of playing, sharing strategies and getting to know the community of players. Sunday is going to be tough, but casual play will be available all weekend to sharpen up your skills for what promises to be one of the UK’s greatest Street Fighter tournaments.
Due to these tournaments having a capped numbers of entrants, players can reserve their place in advance for all three tournaments. This is being logged through the official GMC Forum so please head over there if you wish to participate in this exciting series of challenges. No money is needed at this time, and should all places not be taken up prior to the show, registration will also be available on the day.

Please note that despite being retro games, GMC’s tournaments will be based in the now.play area of Play Expo.

Play Expo is the only UK video games expo which caters for every aspect of video games – from console, PC and mobile to classic gaming (including arcade and pinball) right through to pro gaming/eSports and even cosplay.

Play Expo features four distinct events: re.play, now.play,** pro.play and cos.play**.
now.play has a large emphasis on new and upcoming games, hardware and accessory releases, for the latest consoles and PC. pro.play is an eSports event featuring [big-money!] competitive gaming tournaments whilst **re.play **will feature freeplay arcade & pinball machines, retro consoles and vintage computers. Finally, cos.play will include costume competitions, talks, DDR, Artists and Anime traders.

Play Expo is one of the first places in the UK you can preview the new Wii-U console and try out New Super Mario Bros U, Nintendo Land and Ubisoft’s ZombiU before they hit the shops.

WHAT THE FUCK??? That’s SF2 OWNAGE!

You should just run WW tournament at the end, just for shits and giggles!
