I noticed this black cobra pic the other day and didn’t really think much of it untill I read this thread now. I think he would be a good character to do. Maybe to not make him just another shoto they could maybe make him do tae kwan do and do abit of a reverse boxer with just kicks? Just an idea for something different.
He looks like a really kool character but I’m more in favor of having them create a new female character other than just C.Viper. They could at least have created a new Chinese female name Cantana just like the one in the movie. They should let her be Chun-Li’s rival instead and make C.Viper rival with Cammy.

That could be very cool or very lame.
However, a cross play style between Makoto & Elena could be interesting.
King Cobra is all well and good. He’s pretty cool actually as I love that 70’s blaxploitation movie kind of character.
However, how about a FEMALE black character. Besides Elena we are seriously lacking those in our 2D fighting games.
I mean, imagine if they put in a design like Sheva Alomar! An awesome mercenary style character with kick flips and knife attacks kinda like Rolento. That’d be awesome.

A lot of the time I actually do photo manipulations of certain characters just to see if they could work as a black character. The best one I’ve done so far was Diana from King of Fighters. She should have been black.

I want the Kareem Abdul Jabar character make him like that kick boxer in vf5 (only because he strikes me as a very tall character.) I think he would be something like Adon only more physical.
I would definitely like more female characters to especially black ones. Too many fucking shotos and for some reason they seemed to have nerfed Sakura in this game. I hate using her because he fireball lacks speed and her anti air leaves a bit to be desired IMO. I think Rufus is really great but his character design is completely retarded. Abel is also good but again character design is made of fail. I almost never see the new characters online, and I main Sagat (To break my habit of jumping into stuff.) I honestly think that most people simply do not like the new characters by and large.

Ten anything (other than more asians, which we obviously need) is a bit much but what you’re suggesting could be taken the wrong way pretty easily.

They’re decent but Dudley and Birdie are the only ones who escaped the web of american black stereotypes filtered through bizarre Japanese ideas of Englishness (of all fucking things). If they feel a need to make another one they should really do the Kareem Abdul Jabar type character. Give Fei-long a real rival and make another character than can stand up to Sagat (physically) at the same time? Hell yeah. This has nowhere to go except up.

You misunderstood me above, there’s nothing wrong with adding black characters if they’re good designs, but just making ten new characters black for the sake of it is lame. I liked the way they were going with King Cobra. I know the Japanese tend to stereotype black characters but they do that they for quite a lot of their characters generally. Ryu IS one big sterotype, then look at Yun and Yang with the restaurant.
I wasn’t suggesting SSF4 shouldn’t have more black characters, just that it shouldn’t end up as a sterotyped ghetto-fest like def jam did. Sorry that you took it the wrong way.

and I mean, yeah all anyone can say to that is like ‘fair enough, w/e’ but on a personal level, I can’t take the King Cobra design seriously. I think they should go more on the design route that namco did with raven. It’s a cool character that happens to be black, his blackness isn’t the goal or point of the design.

What? Blade? Of course it’s the goal. They watched Blade and thought let’s do that. But I know what you mean and I totally agree. AM2 did it well with Virtua Fighter I thought. I’d say Bruce sums up more what you’re trying to describe cos Raven I think is the opposite but there ya go. What is ‘blackness’ though, I thought we were talking about skin colour and that’s the point. I’ve always thought it’s when they try and add ‘blackness’ as you put, that they end up sterotyping and it’s always grated me in that way but I don’t take it to heart.
well yeah, blackness in reference to that nebulous region between a collective ‘culture’ or identity and just plain stereotypes. Is all good though, anyway- after that fucking scandal today with Wigan I think Defoe needs to be Street Fighters next black character.
